Frame: X-Metal/Leather Bound
Lens: Gold Iridium

I have been wearing these things for years now....got them off ebay after they went out of print many years ago for 182. I am looking at a mint pair going for over 1000 dollars right now. So glad to still have mine. Love the various stares. Funny thing is...I get way more people every year saying how cool they are. Oakley should bring these back. I'd buy another set just to be sure I had at least one set until I die. They are from Mars.

Man, these are killer. If it came with larger nosebombs and a more diverse lens range, I'd wear 'em out all the time, but it doesn't so it just sits there along with the rest of my X Metals. I'd say that this pair is the most intimidating of the lot though.

Coverage is great, but you will lose some of your peripheral vision due to the design of the orbitals; you'll be staring at solid X Metal instead of clear Plutonite.

I did wear them for a while despite them resting on my cheeks (Asian Face Syndrome). They're comfortable, but my eyebrows got pinched a few times. A design flaw? Heheh.

If you can stomach the look and don't mind the odd gawk or two, get 'em!

I love these bad boys! The design is timeless, and although the first impression is a bit shocking I became acclimated to them quite quickly and wear them often. The fit can be tight on the head, they clamp pretty good. I'd recommend 15 temple shocks or the nose bridge will wear out quick. They can give a headache on a bad day with 25 temple shocks.

The coverage isn't amazing, your peripheral is looking at a titanium frame. But you can do pretty much anything in these glasses due to the light weight, tight fit and indestructible nature. And you'll look sick too!

I stared at the Oakley website for a long time. Two glasses stood out as being totally ridiculous, but still, I had to have them. They were the Overthetops and the Leather Mars. The $315 price tag seemed to keep me in line, but one day I saw them used online, and got them immediately. Yes, they did look silly, but I loved them. The lenses are awesome and very good for bright light into late evening. The hinge where the ear stems meet the frame tend to block your peripheral vision sometime and can be bothersome when driving, but aren't too bad. The leather looked cool, but if you want them to look nice for a long time, don't wear them in the rain. Actually don't wear them at all, since the leather is untreated and will turn an ugly shiny black instead of a fibery tan. Mine is beyond repair, so I continue to enjoy them. It's too bad the frames got so much wear, since the serial number is only #326. Very low considering most X-Metals are in the tens of thousands range.

Frame: X-Metal

Another elusive eBay piece of Oakley eyewear, I'm not 100% sure the Emerald Mars exists, but have seen it consistently on eBay enough to gather that it may be authentic. All the props, boxes, paperwork, bags, seem to be present when someone sells them, and the frames look authentic. Fake X-metals are also very hard to fake and the copies are usually plastic anyway.

I LO-VE-D these soooo hard but unfortunately they fit me so badly, the X-metal is sexy but heavy and unyeilding

Frame: X-Metal

This is one of the most extreme pairs in the X-Metal line up. Easily recognizable and unmistakably Oakley. These fit a wide variety of face shapes, and I love the extreme look delivered by these frames.

They are a bit on the small side, so larger noggins be ware. Also, they could use some smaller temple shocks to help accommodate a larger variety of faces and head shapes. I think the size 15 temple shocks would go a long way in helping with fit. My only complaint is that I can't wear them all day because they fit so tight.

Other than that, an absolutely amazing frame.

Such a unique piece added to my collection and couldn't be happier. Some people may think they don't look good on anyone but I like odd shaped frames and these take the cake in that category. The hand stitched leather is incredible as well. I just wish i had the box and coin..

These are my daily sunglasses still. I bought the entire inventory of my local store when they came out. I currently have three pairs. One daily wearing, and two still in box never worn with all accessories including coin.

Not a day goes by that someone doesn't comment on them and how they look with the red lenses. I absolutely love these things!

I wish they had polarized lenses, and you could still get parts for them. I actually called Oakley awhile back and they directed me to eBay for no name socks, boots, and lenses... go figure! I would buy more if I could find them!

I had these when they first came out and regret to say that they were stolen from me along with 2 other pairs of my oakleys. Now I try to find them and they are so expensive. Truely one of the best pieces oakley has ever made though. Extremely comfortable great lense coverage and great style.

I have had my frames it seems forever and nothing compares. They are perfect for my work and play! I have a problem finding the replacement nose bombs for them and lenses as well. Anyone no where to find them?
BriP -
Frame: X-Metal Crater
Lens: Black Iridium

these are classic oakley. crazy, out there design. The Mars fit alot tighter than the penny or juliet, and the nosebridge does not flex as much. The bottom of the frame touches my cheeks, but its not a problem. The crater looks more complete than the regular mars - the holes add detail to a fairly plain frame. All-in a unique pair that still has great coverage and can be worn as a daily like many have! -1 for those c-clips which break easily instead of torx screws, and frame touching cheeks.

I will admit i was always a juliet guy. Getting whole of a low serial x series ruby juliet was always my obsession and i kinda scoffed at the marses for a long time. Then one day i found an emerald pair on ebay missing the nosebombs for cheap and thought what the he'll? So i bought them. They sat in my display case on the x metal shelf without nose bombs for the longest time and i never wore them. Then i ended up getting a set of the nose pieces and started wearing them. These are now my all time favorite oakley frames. They absolutely represent that weird cutting edge and over the top styling that oakleys of the present lack. They're comfortable to wear and always draw attention and compliments. My new goal is to collect all the marses. Wish me luck!

These are awesome. Unfortunately, I can't really wear them. I guess I prefer to be more discreet. They are definitely a top-shelf item in my collection. The Leather version is one of my Holy Grails.

Frame: X-Metal Crater
Lens: Black Iridium

Mad scientist meets Area 51 welder meets steampunk.

The textured metal frame, the exposed construction details, the not-actually-circular lenses - other people *will* stare at you.

Although these are frankly heavy glasses they sit lightly on the nose (for me at least) because a lot of support comes from the ear stems. I love the adjustable fit as my face isn't remotely symmetrical.
BiGCoB -
Frame: X-metal
Lens: Ruby

What to say more than Perfect ?
Why, ô why don't Oakley make sunglasses like this one anymore ?
The ruby lens is awesome on the mars. Definitely a head turner and a question maker. As for my crater ones, the fit is perfect.

ShadyOak -
Frame: X Metal
Lens: Black Iridium

These are my first X metals and I love'em. They are very unique yet recognizable, I've been surprised at how many people know what they are when I wear them. The funny looks people give me combined with lots of compliments make for a fun wearing experience. I was a bit surprised but these look pretty darn good on me (no I'm not bald). These are not for the timid, they do not go unnoticed. I like sharing my enthusiasm for oakley and the mars gets people talking about it even if it's not their style (does that make me an O-vangelist?).

Now for the technical. The temples are a bit tight on my head, I need some smaller temple shocks to help that. Other than that they fit me good. The coverage is better than I expected, but peripheral vision is definately compromised. Not the best for driving, but good enough for most occasions. The lenses are great of course, for bright days anyway. The only downer is that if I want to swap in a different color I have to mess with the little clips rather than just unscrew them.

Overall I like these for the attention factor the most, which they deliver in spades.

Edit: Got some #15 temple shox, they fit great now :^)

Frame: Crater X-Metal

I LOVE them.
A flex coupler, earstems with jet intake Icons , ... YES, you have here a X-metal that there won't be anymore. + Round orbitals with holes in the frame.
They really look incredible. Like someone said, they are perfect for shaved and quite big heads.

A negative point would be the ghost effect I experience when I wear them which is not very comfortable.

A leagendary pair ever made by Oakley, unfortunately the leather wrapping is not suitable for everyday use, otherwise it definitely adds value to your collection! kind of silly to it put on,imo it is too odd looking :P

I've had these for 9 years and wear them everyday. I've sent them back to oakley twice for a tuneup including new lenses ($50)
they stay on my baseball hat like no other glasses, and i dont' have to worry about them falling off when i'm leaning overboard.
the titanium holds up so well, i think i'm going to order a couple pairs of replacment lens to keep on hand in case oakley runs out. bad a**ed glasses over all.
btw, my sn doesn't start with an M like someone mentioned.

I am grateful to have gotten my hands on these. Great look! And to my surprise fits my head..i do not have a big head. Extremely Confortable and lightweight. I am not sure if i will wear them out since i do not want to ruin the leather but hey...I am hear to collect Oakley's and if I don't wear a few of them that is fine with me...as long as i have them :)
This pair gets 10 SKULLS on look
Very cool looking glasses. Great for any collection if you like the style. And of course since they are leather wrapped, if you are interested in keeping the leather looking new and in great shape..they are fragile and wear/tear should be minimalized if not avoided.
As far as practical use, for me this gets 2 skulls at best.

Iconic design screams Oakley!

By FAR the coolest sunglasses I have ever owned. Wear them everyday, & even after 10 years in the market, they still look futuristic. You can't beat the durability of Titanium. I just picked up a second pair NISB (new in sealed box) off of eBay. I will wear these until they put me in the ground, or Oakley comes up with an updated variation.

Frame: X-metal Leather

Truly an iconic pair of sunglasses. They look very weird, with the round lenses and the hinges sticking out. Not to mention the leather wrap around the nosebridge and the temples. These are only for special days when there is no possibility of harm for these babies. The comfort of the Mars is pretty good. When you first see them, you would think that they could, in no way, be comfortable, but the reality is that they are very good!

trully amazing and tough design by oakley.I never thought this would be rare now so i take care of it very much. I wish oakley would come up with a new version or mars 2.0 to update this model and im sure it will be another hit for xmetal collectors. You wont be dissapointed once you get one of these. The clarity you get and the look on the faces who notices you man that is priceless........
TERRORISM -
Frame: X-Metal
Lens: Ruby

The Mars are aptly named, as their lens configuration is just as round as the planet. Of course, the frames are virtually indestructible since they are rendered from Oakley's proprietary titanium alloy, X-Metal. Interchangeable nosebombs and temple shocks enhance the glasses with a customized fit, as well as flex couplers. My main concern with these glasses is the lens shape. Aside from the fact that I look like C-3PO while wearing them, they simply don't seem to provide adequate coverage. While the X-Metal and Ruby colors themselves look great in this particular configuration, in my opinion it all boils down to an uninspired lens design: a circle.

TUNRLUV -

The Mars have always been one of my favorite creations by Oakley. I fell in love with them when they first came out and I spotted them in a glass case in a Sunglass Hut. I was just walking by, minding my own business, and I saw them. I told my girlfriend I had to stop and check them out. As soon as I put them on, I knew. The way they fit your face and sit so closely to your eyes. I thought they were perfect for me. Lightweight, yet extremely durable. The lenses are good for a wide range of lighting conditions. The leather wrapped frames are personally some of the most attractive frames I've laid eyes on too. The contrast stitching is also a very nice touch. I give these a 5 skull rating because of their overall beauty and functionality. The small peripheral compromisation is just not enough to throw me off of these. Ya know when you see a chick from far away and she's soo hot and then ya get close up on her and your like oh nooo. Well these shades are awesome from a distance and only get more so the closer you get. 5 skulls fo sho! ;-)

One of my "Holy Grail" finds! Before I actually owned these I don't think I had an appreciation for just how unique they are. I am very fortunate to have these at all. I will say that they are not easy to pull off. I am used to that, if you look at my collection you will see I have many very unique colorways, so I know that you can't just slap these on and expect them to look good. I have to say that I would have given these a 3 or 4 if I didn't own them, but now that I've seen the construction and had a chance to actually wear them I give them a 5 purely for the uniqueness.

*disclaimer: as has been said you really cannot wear these every day, sweat will totally discolor the leather. I took the precaution of spraying Leather treatment spray that is supposed to gaurd against moisture dirt and oils, but probably only works so well. The spray in no way discolored the leather.

I was told these were hard to find, but I lucked out. I paid quite a bit for them, but the Emerald lens is so hard to find now that I just thought I'd bite the bullet. The thing with the Mars is they all come with the same serial number prefix. No matter if you have the Leather/Gold, X-Metal/Ruby, or any Mars the number starts with a M. This makes it possible to build a pair that could pass as an official release. This is not a huge deal but something to be aware of if you are looking for an actual original version/release. The rare-factor makes these an important pair so don't expect to see many available for purchase.
Rick -
Frame: X-Metal/Leather
Lens: Gold Iridium
You have to admire a design staff that felt it necessary to pair leather with X-Metal. Who comes up with an idea like that? For that alone, these are worth owning. If you want a pair of glasses that make you look good - keep looking. I have never heard someone say to me "You look awesome in those". Instead, prepare yourself for comments such as "What are those?", "Why did you buy those"? But, that's the appeal for me with the Mars. They grab attention and make people comment. True art in an X-Metal sculpture. Price really dipped on these a while ago, but now the price seems to be on the way up so act fast or you may have to part with a small fortune to own one.
E-Mailman -
Frame: X-Metal

My second pair of Oakleys and the pair that I have worn the most now. It's extremely eye catching with comments about me looking like a bug, and I have received many glances from ppl. My future brother in law wants a pair just like mine, but thankfully this is discontinued, so I won't have some doofus copying me.

Overall the lenses are cool. Outside people see RED, but you see things with a light blue hue to near transparancy. The only thing you have to be careful of is the littel pice of metal that holds the lens in. It can pop out and I had to ship it in for a repair job and requested extra pieces so I could lock it in place by myself instead of some techie.

A great, great pair of sunglasses. I've always wanted a pair and I finally acquired a pair a little while back. The Mars has a clean design, with simple lines, round lenses and patented Oakley characteristics, making this an instant classic. The holes on the Mars Crater just adds to the "cool."

These have to be one of the strangest (aside from OTT) pair of Oakley's I own to date. There are so comfortable to wear. Gold lens is deeper that typical Gold Iridium. A great pair for the collection. Because of there rarity, I don't like to wear them all that much, neither will you!

These are beautiful to admire but they don't look great on too many people. Still, they are classics and you have to own a pair! I rate it a 5 on the coolness factor alone. =)

Frame: X Metal
Lens: Ruby

Ruby would be the archetypal lens for the namesake, and they do lend a flattering appearance to this eccentric (no pun intended) creation. I could see them shutting down another purification session. For those with the means and interest to experiment, Mars won't let you down. Making the orbitals appear like plasma gives an atmospheric glow.
jumpman73 -
Frame: X-Metal

This design took awhile for me to get used to. This color combo is really nice. I feel like the Ruby isn't very dark though. Eye coverage isn't as great as other x-metal frames.
jumpman73 -
Frame: Crater
Lens: Black

Man, I have to eat my words. I really do like these now. They do look funky but that is what Oakley is about. I'll give the Mars crater and extra star from my last review b/c I'm really starting to like them a lot. The eye coverage is ok. You can see the side of the frame in your peripheral vision which kind of sucks. But other than that they are pretty cool.
O-minous -
Frame: X-Metal/X-Metal Crater
Lens: Black Iridium

The Mars is definitely one of Oakleys signature models. If you've always thought they'd look too strange and wouldn't fit your face, I suggest you give em a try first. I was pleasantly surprized myself and now they get frquent wear. There'll always be the stares and some people will tell you they look ridiculous, but that's alright. As for wearability they're(again) surprisingly comfortable and the round lenses offer an interesting perspective with good coverage. The Crater frame is a subtle variant that adds a little more character and the black Iridium lenses are brilliant in bright light, if a little boring to look at.

I absolutely love these glasses. When I started working at the O Store and found out we had these in back, I had to have a pair. I never liked them originally, but seeing black on black in Blade 2 converted me. I love the style, combining the strength of X-Metal, with the individuality of the circular lense. Not to knock on the Juliet lovers, but everyones got them, why not try something different. The Ruby lense was definitely a must have. Another great fit for my shaved head. If you have a large and/or shaved head, Mars is the way to go. There is a downside of less peripheral coverage and a small blindspot, but nothing too severe.

IMO these are the most beautiful sunglasses Oakley has ever released. The problem is that they dont look good on most people. The Mars are built to last, like the rest of the X-Metal line. These can be had for less than $100, and are by far the best sunglasses available in the <$100 pricerange. The leather on the leather version will discolor in time due to sweat/sunlight, and can be removed to make them just like the Crater version.

One of the most intriguing frames Oakley has crafted to date. I can't say much for the head on view of what I look like wearing them but they are worth having to own such a fine piece of art. X-Metal continues to be a great frame alloy and the leather accents add just the right amount of flare. Gold Iridium is a plus too. I do hope we see more oddities like this from O here and there in the future.

Was able to get these cheap, so I did, and I like them. They're fairly bland (just the Leather model sans leather), but I plan to do some mods to it to spruce it up. I'm thinking Denim would look nice. Now if only I could get Ice in them.

These have always intrigued me. When they first came out in 1998, and Michael Jordan was sporting them in a brown fedora, I knew I had to get a pair. I think these are the kinda of glasses you wear with a shaved head. What really sparked my interest in them was their brief appearance in Fight Club. I don’t wear them too much, but they have a special place in my collection. Can anyone tell me about the x metal black leather/Black Iridium model? I have never seen them before.

Designed by Michael Jordan. Worn for a second or two by Brad Pitt in Fight Club.

Totally Oakley. Unique pair of sunglasses. They are the ugliest pair of sunglasses I have ever seen, and yet I bought a pair. They actually are pretty cool when you wear them, but in a "crazy, alternative" way. So in an "Oakley" way!

Everyone I have shown these to have said they are extremely ugly and that I should never wear them out in public. These are the same people who also think its stupid to have more than one pair of sunglasses, so water off a ducks back and all that.

Definitley not my favourite or most worn pair, but a great part of the collection.

Best glasses I have up to now, the design is pretty overthetop for some people but I find them quite classy. They're very stiff, as opposed to my pennies and I like the them a lot more because they don't have spring hinges.

I was worried about the fit since I ordered them on ebay whitout ever trying them on before but, if you're the kind of guy that only the penny fits you in the x metal line, these will too. Hell, I have a very small face, and even with 15 shock absorbers they're extra tight.

Great pair of sunglass overall, if you like the style.

My first X-metal and Black Iridium oakley. The design of the lens is unique, although it's not gonna appeal to all people. The color and design of the frame gives it a rugged look. I have a hard time putting these glasses on, to small for my head, but it's still cool. Great oakleys overall.

Only the Leather one will be recomended. It sure does not look good on me. but I will keep it for now not unless you have the Crater in RUBY or Emerald. The lens of the Mars is what got me. It actually gives you a different hue compared to Juliets and Penny. The color seems more deep. Other than that, the holes in the crater is amazingly evenly drilled out. What really makes this glasses good is it's ridiculously ugly

These are the most understated of all the X-Metals, since the styling is not everybodys taste.
The first Oakleys to offer a sprung nosepiece section, that makes it a big improvement over the Romeo for comfort.
The Emerald and the Ruby were limited, so are quite hard to come by now.

An unusual look as said below. But really, I've noticed that the styling in the X-metal material comes off as much more refined (especially compared to the Moon). The leather wrap really brings it all together for me, and I actually get a lot of compliments on the look. Great fit. Lovely orbital lenses. ;) I can imagine the leather doesn't weather well (thus the reason why the Racing Jackets get all the sweaty sporting activities).

My first black iridium Oakley glasses. They certainly look different from juliets or any other xmetals, but the Mars are just like any X-metal should be. sturdy built, fits tightly, and high quality finish. the X-metal frame flavor are quite something. it's raw and very industrial looking colour. in conclusion, imho, the mars are intended for men only. the design's quite hardcore, although it's also classic with the rounded shaped lenses. my friends said the lenses look like john lennon's glasses. luckily they suits my head well.., great buy!
