Lens: Vr50 emerald, Black Violet Iridium, Ruby Clear Iridium
Absolutely stunning eyewear. These should have been the pair for “times of subtle sophistication" ultra lightweight and every bit Oakley and unlike any other. As the lens number increases the lens size increases, specifically for medium size heads. Titanium clear, Ruby clear for low light to black iridium this eyewear has it all. The VR50 Emerald is exceptional and well worth a look. Lens 4 black violet iridium is another excellent option for medium to low light. If you feel can pull off the pink looking lens. These will become one of your favourite glasses

Lens: VR50 Emerald

Gorgeous, but terrifyingly fragile. Marked down for reasons of impracticality! The frame is ultra lightweight and feels like you're not wearing them. The lenses are a fashion statement rather than a practical sunglass - there's almost no coverage and no wrap. VR50 Emerald is an amazing medium light contrast lens which deserves much wider usage. But the rimless frame mountings on these are not the greatest design and feel very stiff and fragile - these aren't going to get much use outside a display cabinet as flexing them even a little bit feels like you're risking cracked lenses, there's almost no 'give' in them making it worrying to even put them on and take them off... larger faces need not apply! High days and holidays, a very special dressy option to go with a sharp suit and my father's old Breitling Navitimer (another beautiful but fragile thing!)

While the glasses themselves incorporate numerous design elements unlike anything seen with other eyewear, the lens shapes offered are still small and lack periphrial coverage. Lens offerings include Ruby Clear, VR50 Emerald, and Blue Iridium, which keeps the lineup interesting. With their sophisticated styling and inclusion of many higher-transmission lens colors, these shades are probably best suited for formal attire in lower-light conditions.

Lens: Ruby Clear & VR50 Emerald Iridium (Lens 3)

So light and comfortable, you'll almost forget that you're wearing glasses - and with the rimless design, you can hardly even see that you're wearing glasses. There are so many cool and different lenses (and lens shapes) to choose from, but be aware of the high price tag if you can still find a pair for sale somewhere. The only thing keeping these from getting a full 5 skulls would be the fact that they are almost too delicate to even wear. Nonetheless, I love to display them in my case - they are just so damn nice to look at - as well as occasionally wear them out when I want to impress the ladies;)

The real strength of this model are the terrific lenses like ruby clear and VR50 emerald which are awesome. I also like the rimless design but beiing Oakley's first try, the mounting wasn't all that great and it has a tendency to come lose and sometimes even crack the lenses so beware! Also you should realise the lenses aren't curved like in the why 8 and coverage is virtually non existent. On the plus side they are made of titanium and are very very light.

Lens: Lens 3 Ruby Clear Iridium

I had been looking for these for quite a while, but finally having them in my collection is truly amazing! The exclusivity makes this pair an instant favourite.
The frame itself is quite vulnorable I think, it feels as if the frame would not be able to withstand a lot of punishment (not that I'm gonna let anything happen to these babies).

The lens is very nice to look at, but to look through it for long periods of time will become a little annoying because of the ghosting, all the reflections from behind makes it a little intolerable in high lighting conditions.

These were my first set of Oakley's and I can't remember what made me drop $509 on a pair of sunglasses (that's how much they retailed for in Oz). This model is all about the look - as all the other reviewers have indicated because the lenses don't have the usual Oakley curvature they let in a lot of light at the periphery and the frame can be a bit tight.

But these negatives are outweighed by the overall design of the sunglases. The trapeziodal shape of the Lens 3 design (the o-review picture is wrong and shows the Lens 1 design), the flatness of the lens, the wire thin ear stems and round nose pads all go to making these sunglasses unique and worth having, even if only to wear occasionally.

Frame: Titanium and Cobalt
Lens: Ruby Clear and blue-black iridium

Stylistically speaking these are fantastic I love them to death. I think they are very forward thinking and unique.

Construction-wise these really need quite a bit of refinement. They are fragile by virtue of their design which should be expected. However the ear-stems and the nose bridge are attached in a very poorly conceived manner. They are connected with a screw and expanding bolt. This means that over time the hole that the screw and expanding bolt sits in become enlarged under normal wear and tear conditions causing the frames to literally loosen from the lenses. They are no longer taut on either of my Why's. You can help compensate for this by occasionally tightening the screws, but it will never be as good as it was originally.

With that said, you should not use these for anything were they might be damaged. Unlike a lot of other Oakley frames these are a one shot, one kill type frames. You damage these once and you're almost gaurenteed that they are damaged for good.

5 for style, 2 for construction 3 average.

Great indoor lense, poor outdoor lense. Ultra-lightweight, and the lenses help increase my admittedly poor contrast. Fashionable to boot; very classy. Too bad they can't block the light from an Easy Bake Oven. I can wear these at night with *no* reduction in sight range, which should give you an idea of how well they do during bright sunlight.

I hate to use such a terrible cliche, but they're truly a triumph of form over function, not that there's anything inherently wrong with that. 4 skulls, and a kudos for the valiant effort, but next time - assuming there will be a next time - I hope that practicality is at the forefront of the design process.

Lens: 3; Blue Iridium

This is by far, one of the coolest "classy" pairs that Oakley has done. It's such a slick looking pair. Because the lens is so flat, the deep, rich blue color shows very well in both high and low light conditions.
It's prefect for everyday use as well as formal events.

Probably one of Oakley's best "dress" glasses. It's also, as of mid-2006, the only X-metal that has the Ruby Clear lenses. I love the styling of the Why 3, and the unique Ruby Clear lenses definitely make this a great addition for the collection as an awesome wearable pair. There may be some "ghosting" issues if the lenses sit too far from the eyes, but I've yet have any problems, as they tend to sit close to the eyes for me (and thus don't receive too much light from behind to allow for ghosting).

Lovely glasses - unlike anything I have ever seen - you WILL get noticed. They only get worn on special occasions, for the above reasons. Worth getting purely for the lenses. However, the build quality is typical of Why 3's. The screw continually undo (worth getting a small one for doing this every few outings). However, materials are usual Oakley bombproof quality.

I love the Ti Clears. These were actually pretty nice. They are so comfortable and you can barely feel them on your head. I'm not a big fan of the rimless design but these are vey interesting.

I own serveral pair of oakleys for sport, and a rx eyeglasses (box spring 2.0). For more casual occassions I have several pairs of designer sunglasses, and was looking for something classy with the quality of oakley lenses to wear during work.
These definitely fit the bill, and more than that they are SUPER LIGHT! the only expected down side is the tiny bit of light leaking in comparing to my other sport oakleys. But they aren't used for sport so it doesn't matter.
They fit my medium profile face perfectly, but could see how it would feel uncomfortable and look odd if you have a huge head.

In short, if you want sunglasses for more serious occassion and with quality lense that looks good and performs well. With the added bonus of light weight and comfort. Providing you don't have a huge head. This is it!

My first pair of dress Oakleys. Obviously very light and fairly strong. The lens shape wont fit everybody, but isnt that part of the charm? Reasonable light transmission. I beleive this is the only frame with this lens color.

Yes, they are very difficult to wear, but I love them. They are my indoors frame of choice. You will get lots of looks from people, not everyday you see transparent blue lense with a hint of red.

I dont wear mine that often, to hard to find another pair. It is honestly one of my top 3 all-time.

I've never been one to experiment with mind-altering chemicals, but walking home from work while wearing these gave me a pretty good idea of what it must be like to trip on "E". If you don't think there's anything weird with scanning your eyes side to side to take in the marvelous rainbow reflection on the inside edges of the lenses, then these might be just for you. I think they are some of coolest looking shades I've ever seen, but the inside reflection is going to take some major getting used to. Their unique look scores high with me, but they must lose one star due to their impracticality for everyday use.

My local O Store had a few pairs of these but only in the Rx case with the temporary plastic lenses. I tried them on anyway and I was amazed at how light they were. I'd imagine real perscription lenses might weigh a tad more but the increase would be negligeble. And even though the lenses weren't the largest available, they still managed to look good on my big head. That lack of weight with the rubber earsocks would make them perfect for all day wear.

All I can say is WOW. These are AWESOME. Very professional looking frame design, great for fancier occasions, job interviews, or just looking good when you're out. The lens 3 shape is definitely the best lens option and the only one I'd wear. Extremely light and comfortable as well!

The Ruby Clear lenses are beautiful. A light blue base lens with a red/orange/pink semi reflective coating on both sides of the lenses. The blue tint of the lens is almost unnoticable and it often feels like you're wearing clear lenses, if it weren't for the red/orange reflections you catch when light shines in and reflects off the inside of the lens.

I love these.

yeah... totally an impulse buy (curse you Ebay!). my pair originally came with Ruby Clear lenses, and looks brilliant but sadly they didn't fit my large head. i had RX Clear lenses put in instead, and had the optician cut the lenses a bit longer than the original Ruby Clears so the glasses would fit wider. as prescription glasses, the Why3 definitely looks professional and dressy, quite sharp! it's not a look i'm used to, but i'd imagine these would look great with a good suit.

I completely agree with Ed. Snug fit, light sneaking in due to the small lens. But they are great for a more professional, refined look. Very light and comfortable, though ... makes me feel straight out of the Matrix. So if you resemble Mr Smith ... pick these up in a heartbeat!

Review: Frame: Titanium
Lens: Lens 2 Leather Gold Iridium

Great for times when you don't want the sporty look. Titanium allows the ear stems to be very thin and flexible, so they almost feel like they are spring hinged. The fit is rather snug... even though I have a smaller head, the ear stems are tight to my temples. I would not call them uncomfortable, but they are noticeable when I wear them for long periods of time.

The small lenses do let a fair amount of light leak in. I have to confess that I bought these more for the look than for their function.
