I love this lens. My favourite (for now) of all Oakley lenses. The blue base used on the lens gives a soothing view and doesn't hurt the eyes after hours of wearing it. Definitely created to be used in bright sunlight.

Yes, the lens is more orange than when it was introduced and is just a tad more red than orginal Fire. However, it's still very uniquely Ruby and very nice to look at.

I used to think that Titanium was my favorite lens color, but that was before I owned a pair of Ruby lensed Oakleys. Of course, what first drew me to the Ruby was the way they looked from the outside, but the way they look while wearing them impressed me even more. I find that the blueish tint they produce is very soothing and easy to look through. With Fire being another similar option in terms of outside look, the greenish tint that they produce is what kept me from ever buying a pair with that color lens. So, not only is Ruby better looking at compared to Fire, but also looking through. However, it's also better compared to any other color lens I have ever tried.

Not the darkest lense around, but other qualities more than make up for that. The blue hue to the lense makes it the most comfortable lense for your eyes, especially when fatigued (read, post-hangover/all nighter lense). Lots of people complain about the color, but outside in direct sunlight mine look as red as ever. Use in a dark frame. Another flashy lense, so ya might have to work to coordinate with an outfit.

It's a good lens, but not a great lens. I'm obviously in the minority in here. Don't get me wrong, it's a perfectly good lens but I guess I'm not as enthused as everyone else. That said, I think I got the first generation Ruby since the colors go from orange to almost purple towards the middle. They look pretty sweet. The blue hue when you're looking through them is quite soothing though, so from that standpoint, they're quite good but from an aesthetic standpoint, they're not worth the extra cash that they're fetching unless you're a diehard collector.

finally got a pair of oakley sunnies with the ruby iridium lenses.., it's the A-Wire carbon/ruby combo.

my review based on several categories:

durability - good. the only thing bad is that they get smudged very easily compared to ice/black iridium. about how easily they get scratched on another review? i don't know about that, haven't made a single scratch yet(got mine scratched when they arrived though).

comfort - excellent! the bluish tint soothes the eye better than any other oakley lenses. it's way better than the rainy day effect on the black or ice iridiums.

attractiveness - the ruby iridium is basically a 'RED coated mirror', it's orangey sometimes, but one thing for sure is ppl will turn head when they see u in these lenses. try it, and decide for yourself how attractive those rubies are.

overall - ruby are really great lenses, it certainly was created NOT to blend in the crowd. so, if you like to stand out in the crowd then get them while they're available!!

This was a great lens. Created for X-Men and then released shortly later that summer. After years of wearing +Red (which isn't actually red) it was great to have a real Red lens. It did show bits of gold when reflecting but it is so nice in the Jet Black XX. When viewing through it's grey base everything looks a little blued which is nice. Better then straight grey like Black Iridium. One argument I got for a while though is to why it wasn't Red looking through it. Someone even told me in X-Men when Cyclops is speaking with Prof X and you see the shot of the back of Cyclops head and you can see that his are Red looking through. Yeah, for movie authenticity I am sure they were. But seeing everything Red in real life is not healthy. It's a very aggressive hue to be seeing that often.

Iam use in the summer, have the sensation in my memory. I recomend use only casual end now all the day. Broken the perception of things. Good to very sun only. See Blue ass pool.

very eye-catching, very sexy lense. i had a later generation, though, and had mixed feelings about them in my juliets. in some lighting, they had an extremely deep ruby red glow. in others, they looked too similar to a fire lense. that plus the blue hue from insode the lense i felt made it lose some contrast ability. but, if beauty is in the eye of the beholder, then buy these today!

The nonsense surrounding the Ruby lens has tarnished it in my eyes. It's actually not fair though since I shouldn't be taking my frustration out on the lens. It is no secret the color of the Ruby has gone through changes, but the continued banal discussion of it is just lame. If you don't like the color of the new Ruby, why are you bothering with it? Go find a different color and be done with it. I find the Ruby to be quite ordinary to look through. The blue base is dark in my opinion and can become a tad tiresome after a while. If it wasn't for the hype surrounding the X-men movies and Black Hawk Down I doubt Ruby would attract the attention it seems to attract these days. I know, that's the understatment of the year, but if I hear "Ruby Quartz" one more time I'll scream.

BLACK XX with RUBY lens I have a pair of these that I bought shortly after they first came out. The Ruby lenses are such a deep red with dark purple that people are always commenting on the color. They are very easy on your eyes because they are not too dark. ( Perfect to wear in class after a night of drinking your face off)

They look nice from the outside, maybe a bit on the flashy side, but what the heck. Looking through them is only good on certain ocasions. If the sun REALLY shines they are great! - the light blue tint cools down your suroundings which is nice on a warm sunny day - I bet they are great in the desert. But as soon there are clouds in the sky you find yourself wondering whether the sun is actually still shining due to the cooling effect.

I think these are overrated. From the outside some of them look nice, some not. From the inside they are boring, personal I prefer the fire lenses.

Actually, the Rubys (often declared as Gen.1) could look awesome (deep red/purple nearly without any yellow). But mostly they look similar to the fire ones.
BronzeT -
Definitely a very eye catching lens color and I get compliments all the time.Looking through its not my favorite but I got a few extra Juliet lens that I get to wear it now.
UBERCHUCK -
Probably the best out of all the non-dark colors. I find I have to color-coordinate with these lenses but they are still a lot of fun. They are my first choice for days that aren't too bright.
jumpman73 -
I cannot get enough of these lenses. I'm addicted. I have them in all my common Juliet frames, polished, plasma, and carbon. I love them!
banarno -
Quite a nice soothing lense to look through, but not spectacular.
But most people buy this for what it looks like from the outside. (which is awesome)
Comatose -
If you dont like attracting attention, people staring at you, taking double takes, etc, then these lens are probably not for you!

They are absolutely a beauty to look at.. particularly at certain angles & lighting when you get a deep crisp crimson reflection (damn i envy those who own gen 1 rubies!).
I have them mated up w/ xmetal juliets, and they are one of my fave pairs.
O.T.T. -
I have these in my juliets and think ther are the best thing since sliced bread. Again similar to black or ice iridium in lens transmission. They look amazing but are let down by colour variability and the ease with which they blemish. Scrathes show up way too well on them as well. If the review allowed half stars I would probably give them 4 and a half. Then again I have invested way too much cash in them. 5 it is.

A pair of X-Metal Ruby Juliets were my first Oakleys...finally found some for sale on a local internet message board for $350. I love them! Truthfully this is my first pair of nice sunglasses, I've only really owned plastic junk before this.

Oh yea...and don't forget the X-Metal Ruby Juliets made an appearance in Blackhawk Down too :)
Ed -
Highly sought-after lens, although it's actually not my favorite. I know I'm in the minority with that statement. The red/orange/yellow mirror is certainly nice, but the blue/grey base tint actually makes things look hazy.
Jonathan Tung -
I love this lens too, although I do wish the iridium coating were a little darker at times.

Major complaint is that the iridium coating does seem to scratch more easily on this lens than others, Black Iridium for example.

I have three pairs of the Ruby lenses and all are ever so slightly different from each other. That's my minor complaint. I hardly see this difference with my other iridium lenses.
x-metalman -
My personal favorite lens. I love how the red is so much different than any other Oakley lens. On the other side, the cool blue color is very soothing to the eyes. I have these in my Juliet's, and although the price was very high ($600 CAD), it was worth it, as these are my very favorite. Easily 5 stars.

Wicked! One of the best looking iridium lenses out there. The colors displayed from the ruby lens just attracts attention and is simply beautiful. I like the blueish hue from the optics, adds something a bit different to the mix. I only have Ruby in my Overthetops, just because they run so pricey with the Juliets.
MelG -
Very nice lens !! Very warm blue when looking through, effective on all types of light conditions even very sunny and even indoors.
LEX7 -
This is a beautiful lense to look at and to be looked at when your wearing it.
When you look through it the tint is very very similar to oakley light blue lens but just more protective thanks to the coating.
Even works well as an indoor lens, I have found this lens perfect for wearing to work when you are hungover and your eyes hurt.
bong -
what can i say... these are REALLY NICE lenses! AFAIK there seems to be two versions, one with a deep red iridium coating but less mirror, one with a slightly orangey red with more mirror effect. both are equally amazing. it has a neutral bluish-greyish tint and is dark enough for most light conditions yet not overly dark which the Black Iridium sometimes are. they're really flashy and aggressive looking, and attracts a lot of attention. looks great with any dark frames.
o-xide -
scratches easy as well but gives a x-metal/ any dark frame a really good complement. Occasionally it gets a yellowish sheen on different lighting...but who cares...the aggressive look just plain stands out
Dann -
I have these in my Overthetops, and also have seen them briefly in the Juliet's. They are fantastic lenses similar to Ice when looking through them, but have the warm shine like looking at the Fire lenses. They capture the best of both worlds.
Star-Scream -
The newer Ruby Iridium lenses are pure orange in color and come with a grey/blue tint on the inside similar to the tint of the ice iridium lens. Perfect for blocking light. It looks nothing like an actual ruby gemstone color which is why this lens should be called fire iridium instead. I remember in the video game KillZone, the bad guys wear the ruby iridiums with the Over the Tops and the Mars sunglasses. Looks cool in the game and in real life because it stands out in the light. If you type "killzone" in a yahoo image or google image search engine you can see for yourself. Very Oakley design.
tonelam21 -
These are my most favorite lens. This is where it all got started. Nice blueish/gray tint. I could wear these all day.
U9Ly_KwaN -
Simply THE BEST lens Oakley has ever made! But unfortunately this only refers to the earlier and deep red batches!! The newer ones are really ugly and don't look like 'Ruby' at all! The blue back tint feels very nice and 'comfy' to one's eyes. I just love them!! A must have for any Oakley freak!
