I have this lens in my X Metal XX's and Plate's. I find this lens to be particularly useful in the bright sunlight, and not so much in the evening or dusk. However, for that mid-day sun, it is a gorgeous lens hue. The iridium has a nice golden mirror effect, and the tint makes everything a bit more orange. I never have to squint while using this lens.
This is a truly great lens. I only have one pair - X-metal XXs - and find myself wearing these virtually all the time in high summer. The orange/brown base tint is very comfortable and improves contrast - as others have said, greens really pop! The only way this lens could be improved IMHO is with added polarisation. The light transmission is perfect - they're comfortable to wear in full sun (at least in the UK) and I can go indoors or into deep shade and still be able to see clearly, which I can't do with any of the black iridium variants. I have a spare pair of these lenses hidden away somewhere safe - bought in early 2013 from Oakley direct - as I would be gutted if something happened and I couldn't replace a damaged lens. I have a feeling that it won't be long before these are no longer available even as spares from Oakley.
I have them in Shawn White Frogs. Definitely loud on the outside, but still really cool. You've just got to have the confidence to pull them off. From the inside, a pleasure to look through.
Like others have said this is an amazing lens to look at, it's a real eye catcher. My problem with it is looking through it. I really don't like the orange/bronze tint. I usually don't have that problem with titanium or tungsten lenses but this one bothers me.
This is one trully great lens.An oakley timeless piece of eyewear.Impressive either you look through it,or look at it.With a very shiny, bright 24k coating,it no doubt stands out.Internally, what you get is a very nice subtle, mild yellow tint, which I really enjoy. It's soothing to the eye,and very relaxing. The contrast is present, but not as aggresive as the plain gold iridium. However this colour isn't used widely any more.In the past it was used in many eye jackets, the plate,x metal xx,minutes and many more.I thought that oakley abandoned them for a while, but htey re-appeared in the holbrooks.I hope that in the future we will see many more of this one.On the down side, they do tend to scratcch easily. It appears that they can't even stand the wiping with the microclear bag.every time I clean them,I constantly find new scratches. But still they're nice.
I finally got a pair of carbon/24K "corvette" Juliets and this lens is amazing. It looks stunning, the orange base is very comfortable. Definitely my favorite lens colour and I don't see how any other one could change that...
I have this on Plates, Scars, and X-Metal XX. After getting the Plate just because it was unique, the lens color has been to motivating factor in buying the Scar and XX. It is like everyone else says: pretty. As for wearing, it's not bad. I don't shy away from it ie. blue iridium or violet iridium, and I don't gravitate towards it, like black iridium or ruby iridium. Over all, I give it a solid "Above Average."
Quite possibly the best lens Oakley has EVER made. An incredible shine to it...it looks like you are looking into liquid metal when you look at it. Incredible reflectivity of the Fire lens without the green tint looking through it and with more richness and depth looking at it.
The orange tint is barely discernable and, somehow, the lens manages to darken without graying everything out like Ice and Black lenses do. Its a 13% transmission lens so, like Ruby, it will let a certain amount of light through. For some this isn't a huge drawback; for me and my incredibly sensitive eyes, I find myself squinting at times with these vs. the 9% and 10% transmission lenses but I also find that 13% is just right when you are not staring DIRECTLY into the sun and encounter shade or some clouds.
Overall, a gorgeous and versatile lens that is symbolic of the height of Oakley's creativity and one that I Oakley has done a disservice to by not including more in its releases. In fact, as of the date of this review (Feb. 2010) it is not available on ANY current model as the X Metal XX was just discontinued; I have actually purchased 3 sets of replacement 24K lenses for my 24K XX as I anticipate they may soon not be available. If you have it, keep it; if you don't, get it.
These lenses are amazing if you like flashy. There's a reason why the word "bling" comes up in multiple reviews.
I just scored a pair of these lenses for my Juliets. I hear they were a Japan exclusive so there might be some rarity bias here. This tint is spectacular from both sides. I used to think Titanium was the most mirrored of the Iridiums. Then I got my hands on a pair with Chrome Iridium and thought that was the new king. Little did I know that the crown was already being held by 24k. Even with a light source directly behind the lenses, it's really hard to see through the Iridium coating. From the front, they look truly golden. A bright yellow gold. This is not like the brownish mirror color of Gold Iridium.
Looking through them from the back side is a treat as well. I know it's supposed to be an orange base tint, but it's not like what you'd expect. It's a brownish orange and really makes some colors pop. Greens appear electric through these. Unlike Titanium or other bronze tint lenses, these don't make a blue sky look smoggy. They're not quite as good as VR28 though so I'd put them in between when it comes to the base tint.
It's really too bad that there are very few models that use this lens.
The absolute prettiest lens ever. I fell in love with this color as soon as I saw it on the 24K XX X-Metals. It's fantastic to look through and extremely reflective. It's roughly 5 billion times cooler than gold iridium. The contrast is wonderful and it makes anything green pop out. If I could give it more than 5 skulls, I would.
Damn, I miss these lenses. I had them on the one and only: the Eye Jackets 2.0 - shaped after the famed Timebomb watch (both a good AND a bad thing, modelling sunglasses after a watch, IMO).
Theses lenses rock way harder than the gold iridiums or the bronze/dark bronze lenses I've owned or seen. The iridium coating is spectacular and reflects like the 24k gold it's named after. Oakley got the hue and color of the coating just right. The orange base, unique only to the 24k (and leather gold iridium) has a contrast and look that is set apart from normal bronze, much less duller to look through and provides greater contrast. Blue light is all but filtered out. Greens of er, greenery, take on a computer-generated type of look due to the contrast. Just think an animated cartoon like Toy Story and the color of trees and grass in that movie - bright green, bordering on looking artificially/digitally enhanced. Now that's the type of green you're seeing through the 24ks. Like hi-tech digital filters for the eyes. Now that's just too cool for me.
With the sheer number of lens colors available it's extremely difficult to pinpoint a single favorite, but the 24K Gold Iridium is surely at the top of the list. With a shine as brilliant as the precious metal itself, these lenses appear to be Fort Knox in a liquefied form. And the low light transmission means you're well-equipped for the brightest conditions that nature has to offer.
Great lens! I have them in my scars and I love how they compliment they butterscotch frames. Awesome compatability with the lenses to the frame.
So loud they go to 11. Absolutely awesome lens; great contrast and far from lacking in protection. My only wish is that they came in more frames.
Probably the most bling bling lenses Oakley will ever release , the finish on these is amazing . They are realy smooth when lookin thru them , wear these on sunny days definitly , they are not my favorite lenses but I rate them 5/5 cuz I cannot part with them , and I probably never will , In the Juliet or in the XX metal there just amazing !
I got these on a penny polished. when people see it, all that they can think of is the bling bling. makes u look pimp with this combo. 24k with polished metal frame
I have these in my x-metal penny.. it's beautiful! It's definitely one of the lenses that screams "look at me!" the loudest. Driving home today with them, the increased contrast helped immensely. Although I'm used to having black iridium, this may just be my new favorite lens.
There is little competition in the looks department when you pair a 24k Gold lens with a Carbon X-Metal frame. The 24k gold is such a rich and remarkable shade of gold that you can't help but want one. They are great on bright days and I like the fact that you don't see them everywhere. Nothing wrong with a little exclusitivity imo.
Best mirrored lens I have. The brown base is very harmfull to your eyes and produces a nice contrast. It's good for wearing in sun, for bright sun too, but could be a bit to light. But still a great lens with real 24K mirror...bling bling
Have them in Juliets - really nice comfortable lens - similar to gold iridium, but the colour stands out far more - definitely one to get noticed!
A spectacular lense from the time that Iridium was the thing to have. A gorgeous yellow mirror that rivals the reflection of Titanium. Include the contrast of the orange base, and the dark nature of the lense, and you've got a good, bright light athletic lense. Not an athlete? Still a beautiful sight. Downside? Impossible to keep clean.
This has to be the finest looking lens Oakley ever produced. It's just unmistakable. A great lens to look though also.
These just made it to my favorite combo.I got it paired with Carbon Juliets and it just looks awesome with the black backround.
Looks about one of the most flash lens they have ever produced.
Makes everything bright and super sharp, but still soothing on the eye.
I have these in my x metal xx. These are really nice. I really feel like they make things clearer. These also look very sharp as well. Very good eye coverage.
have em in my XX Xmetal , 24K , very loud lenses , but suits the eyewear perfect. tone in tone
This is a great lens, I have it in my carbon/24k juliets. It has a really strong iridium mirror that really looks awesome in the sun, and it has a dark orange/brown tint. It doesn't increase contrast as much as Fire Iridium, but it makes up for it nicely with its stunning yellow/gold colour and dark tint making it great for sunny days.
Looks great with dark blue frames. The brownish base tint enhances contrast quite nicely. The Iridium coating is a bright golden yellow color.
My Plates have these lenses and they're superb. Excellent shading in the bright sun but the contrast makes everything look great in the late afternoon when the sun is going down. As great as they look great from the outside, it's much better to be the one wearing them.
Got this in my Plates. Have to say, great lens. I like the increased contrast but still having it dark enough(unlike Fire).
Love the hue of the lens, and the iridium coating on the 24k lens is simply awesome. It brings such a rich gold color, and is completely reflective. Unless it's one of the new iridium versions, you generally want your iridium lens to be completely reflective. The 24k lens comes through!
Superb lens for bright light, have this in a pair of crystal blue minutes. Lovely deep iridium coating and seems pretty resiliant to scratches.
Great lens ive got it in my Midnight eye jackets and my TI02 XX X-Metals.
its similar to Gold Iridium but slightly darker to look through.
A very nice lens to ski in when its a bright day.
I love this lens. I have it on my Juliet's. The mirror polish on this one is stunning, Under the right light conditions, it almost seems like it glows. Looking through it, it kinda reminds me of the fire lens with it's brownish tint. I hear they don't offer this lens for the Juliet's in the US though, so I have to be extra careful to not scratch this.
These lenses are very close to perfect : the finish is absolutely stunning as it looks like the gold coating on astronauts' visors. The dark brown tint makes greens look super vivid and are actually very comfortable in most light conditions. I can wear them during a cloudy/rainy day and still benefit from the enhanced contrast. The only drawback is that, during very sunny days, the light (especially reflections) can get a little too bright for me. I have very pale eyes so they are very light sensitive ... I think I'll have my lenses changed for gold iridium polarized.
Over the years I have spent collecting Oakleys, I have found a lot of lenses that I considered my favorite at one time or another but 24K is currently at the top of my list - and I think it will be pretty difficult for something else to come along and knock it off the top. It is a beautiful lens to look through and it is just as beautiful to look at. I works best in bright conditions but I have also found it usable in medium light situations. Back in the day this lens color was available in a much wider range of styles but lately it is becoming more scarce, so if you come across this lens option in a frame that you like, I highly recommend opting for 24K.
