What's your definition of "rare"? Yes, everyone has their own definition of what is rare, but it seems the word is used for everything that's even mildly difficult to find. Any given model's production run is probably in the high tens of thousands if not in the hundreds. Is that all that rare for the majority of glasses? Take for instance the Leather Wrap SJs. When they were available, it seemed like every second store had a few to sell. Hell, Oakley couldn't even sell it and now some O Stores have the thing on clearance. If a model was produced in high quantities but are held in private hands that don't want to sell them right away, is it rare? Put another way, if there are a million of a certain sunglass, but they aren't offered for sale because people just don't want to, is a production run of 1 million all that rare?

Rare is more like "one of a kind" but in Oakley terms, a Ruby X Metal Juliet is not RARE because I can just get an XMetal Frame w/ Black lens and replace it w/ Ruby. From the outside you can't even tell the difference. On the other hand a Ruby Penny is RARE. You cannot do the same as mentioned.

For most people, rare is what you have, that others don't. Having said that, I'm pretty sure I'll never run in to someone wearing another pair of WhiteCamo HalfJackets, even though they're out there.

obviously stuff that never made it into production like the stuff that FP and MS have.
but i think rare is also the stuff that they dont have in shops anymore and that hardly ever appears on ebay.
specially mint in box pairs that are like 15 years old.

Good answers. Now let me ask you this: What has been deemed rare but you disagree with?

I think when it comes to Oakleys "rare" should be subdivided. For instance, there were millions of blades produced but since they haven't been produced for a long time how many mint condition ones remain? It's like finding a Yugo that still runs.

What's not rare? Most of what gets called "Limited Edition" runs. The first 5000 (or 10,000) or whatever else of a model may be rare but they are no more rare than the second 5000 or third 5000 regardless of whether the first round got called limited edition or not. Might as well call the first 1000 of every model 'limited edition' then for all the difference it makes.

That make sense, but it doesn't seem to work like that in practice. These "first run" LEs seem to be harder to find than all the others. Perhaps it's because the first few are given to people close to Oakley; perhaps it's because they're older and get used up more quickly and/or were newly introduced products that had defects; or perhaps its because if you send it into Oakley, it may be replaced with a higher serial # and eventuallyt destroyed.

Timebomb # 1 that would be a hard to find Rare Item if i ever saw one. Or Romeo, Juliet, Penny #1...

That would be sweet to have.

'rare' here in my country would be anything oakley with ruby lenses on it. cos strangely the Oakley distributor here doesn't have anything with ruby lenses to distribute anymore. and no, they never order from Oakley HQ.

Someone told me Jim has the first 10 of every oakley ever made so to have a #1 would be impossible.

My Titanium-Blue Straight Jacket lenses are rare. There is a lot of stuff that could be called rare, but having access to even the "rare" items by working at Oakley made me feel that they weren't really that rare. So rare to me is stuff that never went into production or one-offs that someone got if they knew someone, like the lenses I got for my straight jackets.

My definition of rare? A steak that isn't cooked very long.(kidding) I'd have to say stuff that you don't see a lot of, anywhere. Not on eBay, not in stores, not on people. So I'd have to say the 18K Limited Edition Time Bomb would be rare to see. Yeah I know it's available on O.com and it has been since it's release, but I ask you, when's the last time you saw one?

Hey X - whens the last time I saw one?...hell when is the first time....? Yeah - those are friggin rare!

Cferr - dude you are the man - I aspire to have even some resemblance of the collection you have - dude, outside of FP you have got to have the best collection here - and I bet yours would even rival his.

Rare is something I want before I have it.
or...rare is something I want that I'll never get.

As far as my penny's worth of wisdom goes, I would say rare is when someone is willing to pay more than retail for a second hand, unavailable or discontinued item.

For examples look at Ruby Juliets, thumps when they first came out and blades/eye shades respectively

Here's something that won't be seen everyday (and my newest addition): The ESPN Thump.

About 4 of these were made for ESPN and given to their VIPs during the 2005 Superbowl (though I've also been told only 2 exist, both of which were given to the winners of the "Superbowl Squares" game...*shrugs* don't ask me what that is). Never thought I'd come across these after being told of their existance by an Oakley rep. Thank god for eBay.
