Frame: Polished
Lens: VR28 Black iridium
Let me start by outlining the things that I don't like about the Juliets.
1st the earstems are rather dull with the exception of the hammerstems which are only on a few polished models.
2nd while the orbitals are far from the smallest I have seen from Oakley they also leave a lot to be desired. The downward portion of the Orbital is downright appalling. There is 0 coverage and quite a gap between my cheek and the bottom of the frame. Side to side the Juliets let a lot of light in the peripheral.
3rd the frame of the Juliet where the 'intake' port is gives you literally a blind spot on both sides. The frame is so large there that it blocks your view requiring you to move your head to see around it.
4th Juliets are not light, though I wouldn't call them heavy. The original Romeos were heavy, Juliets are just light enough that they don't bother me.

Now what makes the X-squareds BETTER THAN THE JULIETS? Earstems and overall styling, while obviously Oakley, are clearly a refinement over all other X-metals thus far. The earstems are incredibly slick! with the integrated "O" in the frame that wastes to dangerously thin before widening to accommodate the unobtainium. The rest of the frame is bold as hell. Great lines and 'outgrowths' (in lack of a better word) make the frame more than just a holster to the orbitals. The most genius thing about the frame though, is how it just gets out of the way. When wearing the X-metals everything about the frame just disappears. The outgrowths are invisible to the wearer. The intake port is absolutely invisible to the wearer, while looking so badass from the outside.

Next lets touch on the orbitals themselves... Complete and utter perfection. This is about as close to 100% coverage as you can get from any lens. All without looking ridiculous or derivative (like the XX x-metals) or without compromising fit (like Pitboss and many others that have large orbitals and terrible fit)

All in all these are the end game for me. Best Oakleys ever period. I say that without reserve. Yes they could be lighter, no their weight does not bother me. A+

I didn't know there was a new X-Metal model until I saw these in a dealer in Hong Kong. I have longed for a new full framed X-Metal since the released of Penny. Not that I didn't like thehalf framed Romeo II and Half X which I also owned but I prefer a full framed a little more. These latest from the X-metal line are great. What I like the most about them is the lens coverage and how well it fit on my face. I think it's the best fitting X-metal yet. It look a little strange now that the two pins from the nose bridge has been removed from view but it's still there, just hidden. The polished Carbon frame are so shiny and sexy and the black polarized lens just match the frame perfectly. The newly designed arm with the extra holes are a nice touch too. Also noted are these also come with a free soft vault which cost $30 if purchased alone. Thank you Oakley:)

All models above.

Of all the X-metals, these come as number two, after Romeo.
They are really comfortable, very stylish, and the coverage is exellent!
To bad these were the last of the X-metals. I wonder what the next model would have been like...

These fit the larger head as well as the smaller, to a certain point.

The best looking ones, in my opinion, are the polished w VR28 Black Iridium Polarized and the 24K w Titanium Iridium Polarized.
Get a pair...you won't regret it!

The release of the X-Squared marked the Return of the King for Oakley.

As Oakley's #1 marquee line (at least to collectors), the X-metals are the only sunglasses in the entire current lineup that still truly embodies the philosophy of cohesively blending art, science, technology and Oakley attitude. Starting back with the Romeo 2 however, the art and attitude aspects of the equation have dulled ever so slightly and eventually disappearing entirely with the Half-X. It is with great relief that all factors that make the X-metals unique have finally been revived in the X-Squared.

The most noticeable attribute of the XS is that it's the first squarish X-metal. Square orbitals normally would not work well with X-metals due to their far out, futuristic styling cues. But that's where part of the genius of the XS comes from. It takes typically fashion-oriented square lenses and morphs it into something that would fit well in another X-men movie. Borrowing successful design elements of the classic Juliet, the XS creates a form that truly sets it far apart from Oakley's current design approach. Given Oakley's current love of more mainstream aesthetics, the XS styling is refreshing.

The next thing I noticed was the earstems. The earstem on the XS is only a few millimetres shorter than the previous X-metals, but it's noticeable. The earstems are also a tad thinner and more sculpted than they have been in the past, and there is an ellipse logo carved out in the first third of the stem from the temple. Similar design cues can be found on some of the Wires, but this is the first time this has been seen on an X-metal.

The fit is wonderful. The orbitals are a work of art and would likely compliment most face structure and size. It's tighter than the other X-metals (partially because of the shortened earstems), but the fit will probably be great for most people. The weight is comparable to other full-framed X-metals, so it's a bit on the heavier side. However, it's just as comfortable as the Juliet, Penny or XX X-metal. The XS comes with replacement nosebombs for fine adjustments, but I've not seen any replacement templeshocks which may be a disappointment to some.

The customizers will love that you can probably interchange orbitals, nose bridges, and earstems (or so I've been told). For the wearers, you can tighten your own nose bridges (to a point). Little added conveniences such as these contribute to the already long list of benefits the XS provides.

There really isn't a whole lot of negatives to the XS. I guess if I were to be picky, I would say I wish they had included a completely overhauled aluminium X-metal case rather than the ballistic X-metal case it does come with. Or at the very least replace the X-metal badging at the top of the ballistic case with the new logo rather than the old one. I mean, they included a coin with the new logo, so it would make sense that an X-metal case would also include that logo. The included case is the weakest point of the XS offering, which speaks volumes about how great it is since most people find the ballistic case to be very cool.

Another negative is there's a wide range of batch variation for the Ruby Iridium lenses. I was hoping they'd master the art of making Ruby lenses but that doesn't seem to be the case. I've seen lenses that look like Fire Iridium to ones that look like +Red Iridium, with no tint being more common than the other. I can say that when you get a lens that is predominantly dark red (rather than orange or purple), the X-metal/Ruby combo is absolutely brilliant. Very Cyclops-like.

The XS has taken its sweet time making its way to Oakley fans, but the wait's been well worth it. While most other lines try to stomp Oakley into the mainstream mold, it's very exciting to see a product that demonstrates the old Oakley we've grown to know and love. It brings me back to a time when I need only see a small picture of a new frame to know and understand its brilliance rather than necessarily having to see it in person to make up my mind if I like it or not. Good memories from the height of Oakley's design renaissance.

There has been a great renewal of faith by fans because of this release, and Oakley deserves all the praise it gets for this achievement. Welcome back, X-metal.

Frame: Carbon
Lens: Black Iridium

This was the final X-Metal design, and a winner on all counts. It was the only X-Metal to use Torx screws instead of the "rivets" on the nose bridge, the only square shaped X-Metal, and the only one with the unique style of open ear stems. This style fits many faces quite well, and it had quite a short production run so it will be forever a keeper. This is my favorite frame next to the one that started it all, the Romeo. I guess you could say this is the Omega of the original X-Metal line.

Frame: Polished

These are heavy but wearable and are great looking sunglasses if you have a medium to big head but if you have a small head they offer good coverage but the bottom of the lens may touch your cheeks even with the big nose pads on and the small nose pads won't work as they'll sit too close to your face and your eyelashes and/or eyebrows will touch the lens and get oily marks on them. These do have spots where light can leak in and i find that you have to put them on slowly or slightly pull them open to get them on even with a small head. The number 15 t-shocks are too loose for a small head, the number 25 will be just right for most & number 50 will be too tight but it will open the frame up more so they won't touch your cheeks and light may leak in. Coverage is good at the expense of size as they are a big frame but i get more coverage from Half Jacket 2.0 with big nose pads or standard Half Jacket with small nosepads or Bottlecap with more comfort & a better fit. I wouldn't buy these for function but more for the fact that if i was a die hard XMETAL fan just to say i have a pair.
The VR28 lenses are not great in full sun with the sun in front of you or to the side as the glare is too much especially when driving it makes it hard to see. The contrast is nice and can take some getting used to and is soothing when you get used to it. It dulls any green and affect natural colour perception but is nice too look through.

Juliet Reloaded!
Got my XS yesterday, and simply can't stop admiring them. A truly amazing piece of art - if Michaelangelo had sculpted David with glasses, these are the shades he would have chosen... They correct every small flaw that the Juliet has, and fits perfectly on most head sizes. I have owned Pennys also and have a medium/small face, therefore I was concerned that the XS would be to big. However, they fit absolutely perfect and don't seem to be any wider than Juliet when worn. MUCH more coverage also, and the frame is almost invisible for the bearer.
To conclude: Oakley have finally given us a king to match our beloved queen Juliet!

Lens: Oakley, carbon polished, x- squared I got one from my wife's approval to get one. That what happens when you get married. Lol. I had mine since 2010. Well now its 2012, I want to go buy one for my wife and what do I find out. They don't make em anymore. Oakley vault in az had to order one from Washington state Oakley vault. The cool thing I only paid 350 final sale instead of $400.00 .I say its a definite collection.pass it on to your son when he grows up.

My sunglasses arrived today - I must say I'm very impressed. I bought my first pair of Oakley's (Straight Jackets) about 5 years ago - and I still Love them - they do every thing I wanted. But the lenses were well used and needed replaced so decided to treat myself to something new.

Bought a pair of Split Jackets - and was soO disappointed that I sent them back - the fit was poor and they felt cheap - DESPITE BEING £180

So I decided to hunt the Net and eBay for a pair of X Metal Squares. At last I found a pair of eBay at half price £150 - and went for it. They arrived today and what can I say. The fit is excellent almost as good as my straight jackets - I was worried they might be too large for my face - but they are not over powering like scapels/jawbones. Understandably not as light O matter frames but not notibly heavy.

My last oakley's had polarlized lenses with these been standard lenses I was concerened but I need not worry the clarity is outstanding but at least if I want go to replace the lenses I can for an extra £80.

So In conclusion, I would highly recommend the sunglasses if you can get them for the correct price - Oakley's RRP is on the high side. These are quality glasses - with some individuality. WELL WORTH IT!!

Ahh the X Squared. I personally really love this frame. I am a big frogskins addict and appreciate the fact that they created an X Metal with a square frame. I also just love the feel and fit of this frame. I think it is a great successor to the Juliet, but will not reach the Juliet's status. Who is wearing X Metals nowadays? We don't have Brad Pitt or MJ to make them look as cool as they were back then...

I just recently purchased a pair of these shades. And i must admit, this is one piece of work. Oakley have revolutionized once again in its unending quest for innovation. Not that I beg to disagree. But I do have one reservation, the frame is quite heavy. and the nose bridge of my x squared is quite loose. instead of the traditional hex bolts, they are adjustable screws. kinda weird considering the images posted in the net are different. but i went over the shades, they are authentic (i hope)..and the end of the ear stems bend, not like the usual straight. i do hope these reservations will be justified in any way oakley can as i have put my faith in the company for over a decade. i have collected numerous models of oakleys (not bragging), and also its apparel and other stuff (not bragging again). please, if there is someone keen enough to answer my issue about this query, please enlighten me.

Ive been collecting X squared nowadays because so many people have already the Juliet which is the very common design of the X metal. If you want to be different from the juliet. This is the model for you.

It suits my med face and snugs perfectly. Not heavy as you think.

Frame: Carbon
Lens:Fire Iridium Polarised

Had these arrive at my house yesterday after finding someone on ebay that had several pairs and was willing to do the colour combo i wanted, they were brand new with origional packaging etc.

First impression was holy crap they look big! lense coverage is superior to the juliet and the weight difference is neglegible, i think as i have a slim face they look a little overbearing mainly as the earstems are shorter than juliets too so without ducati earsocks the fire lense on black it a little bright and "front heavy" for colour balance.

The earstems have tapered edges that are damn sharp and scratch when putting on and removing the shades, but the frame grips the skull like a dog grips its favorite bone!

With temple shocks i only had the spare red ducati 25's these made the grip even tighter to the point of being uncomfortabe.

From what seems like alot of moaning from a limey you may wonder "why the hell have you given them a 4" well.... the bottom line is as i walk through the town where i live i see some people wearing oakleys and even some of my friends have juliets but not a single soul so far has a pair of x squared let alone some in a different colour way, and even as i walked along with earphones in people looked as i passed and one guy realising i could not hear him simply approached me from behind tapped me on the shoulder so i would turn to face him, pointed at my x squared and gave a thumbs up before strolling off.

so if you have read my tale do not be put off owning these, they are pretty spectacular and although a little scratchy when you put them on, you will only put them on once a day because after that you will never want to take them off!

Frame: Plasma
Lens: Clear

Just received my Custom Plasma/Clear RX X Squareds today and all i have to say so far is WOW...

I have googled far and wide and from what i can find, this is the only pair of these made to date. so from a collectors point of view, these are priceless.

First impressions, they look INSANE, have been getting stares off people all day long wearing these, have never had so much interest before in any of my other Oaks including Elites!

They are a little heavy yes, but have had them on for 5 hours now and they still don't really feel uncomfortable, don't have massive indentations in my nose or anything. They fit maybe a little tight, maybe a little pressure behind the ears but i'm sure they will give a little in time.

The plasma colour is just right, i think polished would have looked too bling and trashy, x metal would have just looked daft, and carbon would have looked like plastic.

Case is nice, packaging is nice, all round 5 stars for these bad boys, apart from attention grabbing, for that they get 6...!

Only minor complaints - these particular frames have been built using slightly larger than usual gaskets on the bottom edge of the lenses, i guess this is to do with the rx lenses, but they stick out ever so slightly and are noticeable. no big deal though. only other thing, have had these on just a few hours so far and already they seem to be loosening at the nose bridge. if this doesn't get any worse it won't be a problem, but if it keeps getting looser these will be going back to Oakley to get sorted. it may just be the normal amount of flex in the nose bushes but i could have sworn they were tight when i got them out of the box...

Frame: Both Plasma and Polished
Lens: VR28 and Fire Iridium Polarized

I currently have the plasma frame with VR28 Black Iridium pol lenses and love this look. The VR28 is my favorite lens by far even though some think it isnt "dark" enough, it provides the perfect balance for me. I just recently sold my "polished" frames because I was never quite into the chrome look and quite honestly, was deceived by the stock photo and thought the polished was a black color. Either way they were solid frames as well, just not my style. I like the coverage the X-Squared give on my larger face over the juliets (which I also have and love). The X-Squared looks mean, feel very sturday and I love wearing them. If I had to give a con, it would be the ear stem ends that can be a little bit sharp if you dont use both hands to put these on. Still, worth the price tag.

Frame: Polished Carbon

Another great pair in the X-Metal family. As far as fit goes on a larger face, they sit nicely between Juliets (snug) and X Metal XX (loose). Polished Carbon paired with the Black Iridium Polarized is a sleek color combo. A great pair to have in the rotation!

Frame: Polished
Lens: VR28 Black Iridium Polarized

The X Metal XX and Juliet are like fine European race cars, while the X-Squared (XS) is like brute American muscle car. I am very happy to have both world magnificent styles.

The XS has better face contour so there is less sun light leaks from the sides and tops comparing to Juliet and XX.

I wish Oakley would design a "slim" form-fitting and "rigid" case so that I can slip it inside pants pocket like Ray Ban Aviator. Now if I'm not using it, I have to place it on my head, or on the back of my neck with collar shirt protecting the lens. The former way ended-up scratching the soft lens when I bumped-up hard objects. Great thing the frame is ultra strong.

Oakley should be able to produce hollow front frame in order to reduce the weight without sacrificing the strength since titanium is very strong alloy.

Though a tad heavier that Juliet and XX, it feels light and enjoyable to wear for long hours.

Though XS has strong bravado look, the Juliet and XX are still the #1 timeless work of art.

Frame: Carbon
Lens: OO Black Iridium Polarized

I was hesitant about this model but when I tried it on I was sold. The carbon finish on the frame is topnotch. Great texture and it feels solid. It's still heavy but a tad lighter than most X-Metals. The overall design of the frame is more modern for today's designs but still gives a hint of past Oakley design language especially the lines and contours. The earstems are shorter, but for my head it fits better than my Juliet. There's the iconic O icon at the temple and about 1/3 of the frame has an ellipse which I think is..(you guessed it)..another O icon!

This is my first Oakley with contrast and polarized lenses and I love it! I was choosing between the Black Iridium Polarized and the VR-28 Polarized but I wanted the Carbon frame so I chose this instead and wasn't disappointed about these after I tried it on. It's polarized but doesn't interfere much with my car's dashboard LCD's, but the polarization works! (I wonder how they managed to do it..well, i presume it's because it's an Oakley!). These is now one of my favorite lenses alongside my emerald and black iridium.

I think this model would be another classic alongside the legendary Juliet. The Juliet is still king, but this one might just be destined to be the heir to the throne. Kudos to Oakley.

Awesome sunglasses. Amazing clarity of lens. Really make things pop out.

I have a lot of sunglasses from all sorts of brands and these are far and away the best.

Only drawback is they are for more casual attire (they just don't go with a suit).

Frame: Plasma, X-Metal
Lens: Fire Iridium Polarized,Black Iridium Polarized

Being a Juliet fan for over a decade, I absolutely loved the new X Squared. The new square lenses provid additonal coverage and give the the X Squared a more "aggressive" look in contrast with the Juliet's elegant look. Oakley designers did an outstanding job in transforming the X-Metal line to a more fashionable square lenses. However, unlike the classic Juliet, the X Squared does not seem to fit the Asian faces well. With a larger frame, the bottom of the frame is touching my cheeks uncomfortably. All of my Asian friends are having the same problem. This problem can easily be solved with a bigger nosebomb. Oakley, please consider to include 3 nosebomb sizes (small, medium, large) with the X Squares so folks like me (big face with flat nose) can enjoy these amazing sunglasses a lot more that we are now. However, that did not stop me from adding couple pairs to my Oakly collection :-)

Frame: X-Metal
Lens: Ruby Iridium

I ordered these recently and have been wearing them for the last couple of days. I am not one to change sunglasses lightly as I have only owned 3 pairs of of sunglasses in the last 19 years (all oakleys of course).Which I wear them pretty regularly. My previous pair were Crosshairs which have served me very well but after crushing them by kneeling on them twice last year they have never quite been the same. I have been looking for a new pair of Oakleys for about 6 months but nothing really caught my eye. All the Oakleys stocked in surf and sunglass shops in Australia seem to be pretty boring and I was after something distictly Oakley.

After having a look at the Oakley website I decided X-Squared with Ruby Iridium were just what I was after. After much ringing around on the phone the only place that had them was a local Oakley store for which they wanted more than the recommended retail price and probably for a pair that had been tried on 100 times before. I decided ordering online was my best option.

I was a little worried after reading here that the lenses might not be as red as I'd want them to be but upon opening my package I was presented with an absolutely stunning pair of ruby lense glasses. I have tried on Juliets in the past and found them a little tight so was slightly worried it would be the same with these and while they are not easy for me to just slip on but once on they are a very nice fit. They also feel like they sit closer to my eyes than what i am used to. I wouldn't call these negativs just something that comes along with wearing something new.

These are much sturdier than my crosshairs but don't feel all that much heavier. As I said before I was lucky with the lenses I got, where they are very red with only a very tiny bit of yellow showing up on certain angles more towards the edges. The frame is great and really makes these lenses stand out but finger prints can show up on the X-Metal at times.

I have only worn them out a couple of times but these certainly do grab attention and turn heads. Obviously not the glasses to get if you want to blend in. These also might not go with all colour clothing especially anything green. If your into dark clothes especially black then these will go really well.

Not alot more I can say after only having these for a short amount of time. No doubt these will last as long as all my previous Oakleys which are all still wearable. If anything changes I'll update my review.

Frame: X-Metal
Lens: Ruby

I was able to grab one of these new line x-metal for almost a year ago, and I could say its a very fine piece of eyewear.

One thing I love about the X Squared, is that in no longer have the rivet on the nose bridge, this would give me the chance of repairing it on my own when the time comes when I believe the eyewear is loose with in the Bridge. Though some X-Metal Fans would agree, the Juliet hold this rivets which surely is an aesthetic look when facing another person. For me the screws on the Nose Bridge of the X Squared is excellent.

Besides that, the all over look and feel of the X Squared is great. it has better wrap around coverage besides Juliet and my Romeo 1.0.

Rating it 5 out of 5, because I love it!

Didn't like the ruby lens that much. It needs to be like the first gen ruby. Its my only hydrophobic lens that's why I cant replaced this with custom lenses. Despite that I still love it and perfect for the summer.

Nicely and snugly fit for my face. Oakley you have a winner here. Probably replace the Oakley Juliet.

Frame: Plasma
Lens: Fire Iridium Polarized

Pros: Optimal clarity, No glare, wow factor, sophisticated but head turner

Cons: a little on the pricey side

My wife let me get this for Father's Day... and what a gift indeed.

I chose this over another jacket-type Oakley's because I already had quite a few of those, and they were starting to look somewhat similar. These cost a little more than your average Oakley, but at least it looks the part as well.

What drew me to this pair are the facts that foremost, they draw attention for the RIGHT reasons. Some color combos that Oakley has, dare I admit it, commanded a little too much attention, and bordered on being "gaudy". Regarding looks, I chose these because the plasma frame looked substantial, and that fire lens is very eye-catchy from passersby. And once people look and examine the glasses, they are always impressed by it's build and quality.

Secondly, the fit and finish is 2nd to none... When these go on my head, I actually FEEL the $400 bucks on my head, you know? It's not plasticky or cheap feeling... it feels like it has some meat to it. It's heavier than the other pairs I own (I own 9 total), but it's in a good way. It is by no means too heavy for wear. The fit on the face is nice and snug too... I've only worn them for a max of 1 hour at a time each time, but during that time, there was no excess pinching or press.ing. They wrap my head quite well. The orbital frames protect from outside light.

Overall, I would recommend this pair because I feel it commands attention, but for the right reasons. They look AND feel expensive, the design and form are first rate and other people think it's one awesome pair of shades. The fit and wrap around my face is superb. On days that I feel sporty and loud, I wear my white chrome straight jackets or polished clear fuel cells. But on days I feel like being calm, cool, with a little bit of flair, I put these babies on. I was deciding between this and a pair of split jackets or Juliets or Jawbones. I am glad I chose these instead. Great job Oakley.

Frame: X-Metal
Lens: Ruby

Finally! An updated x-metal that is full framed!

Great coverage and nice, agressive lines. A bit on the larger side so they're a bit more "in" than the juliet or penny.

The hydro/oleophobic lens coating is a plus and the ruby iridium has a great look to it.

I'm not a huge fan of the earstems though. That cutout is nice stylistically, the but ear stems are very thing and, although it's probably not possible, they feel like they would be easily bent.

Still rated a 5 becuase I love the fit and finish AND the new design is just pretty.

Very nice to see Oakley getting back to the tried and true great designs for their X metals. I got a pair with a darker of the ruby color so very nice indeed. Fit is nice and tight on my medium sized head and like my Juliets are comfortable to wear. Though not quite as comfortable as spring hinges they stay on better and don't shift with rough movements.

Lens: Black Iridium/Ruby Iridium

Oaksarecool4eva, I purchased these a few months ago when they were first released and decided to install a Ducati red Unobtanium kit on the Carbon frame. I also realized that the earsocks were a bit too long, and trimmed them a bit with a razor blade, but the T-shox do fit, at least the # 15's do.
Overall, one of the best pair of X-Metals ever produced.

Oaksarecool4eva -
Frame: Carbon
Lens: Black Iridium (with custom green Iciro earstems and nose)

Just got these today and all I can say is what a legendary pair of Sunglasses! I took a punt and got some Special Ichiro Edition Green Earstems and nose peices for Juliets when I ordered my X Squared, and rather unexpectantly they fitted almost perfect! The Juliet rubber parts are near the same sizes as X Squared, all except the temple shocks only!

All I had to do with Juliet Ichiro Green earstems is carefully cut just a few millimeters off one end with scissors (as the Juliet earstem is a bit too long) but after that the fit is perfect! The Ichiro green Earstem and nosepieces look very cool against the dark carbon frame, it really stands out! So guys if you want to put some nice custom colour Ichiro or Ducati red Juliet rubbers on X Squared, yes you can, but you will have to trim the earstem by just a few millimeters with some scissors. The only Juliet rubber that won't fit is the Temple shocks only as they are different size! I say this because Oakley has no color earstems and nose kits for the X- Squared and I don't know if and when they will produce any?

Now to the Sunglasses I was against Oakley in recent years for making Romeo 2 and Half X as semi rimless X-Metals, It spoilt the tradition! I'm sure lots of people agree with me. The Half X was a bit of a boring style too. But I think the Romeo 2.0 was a nice style like these X-Squared, but unfortunately it was semi rimless. With the new X Squared back comes the full X Metal frame, and in my opinion back comes Oakley!

The weight of these is similar to a X-Metal XX and Juliet but the weight reminds us they are X-Metals right! The style is first class and quite a few heads turned the day I wore them to work. When you hold them in front of you , it is easy to see the amazing 3 dimensional styling, only Oakley can master! The fit is a little larger than Juliet, which is good as I thought Juliet was a rather small sunglass. These X Squared I wouldn't say are neither small or big, they are medium size.

The size of a pair of sunglasses is important for 2 reasons
: 1. Too big will hide a good looking face especially smaller face. 2. Too small of a sunglass will look silly on a large face. The X-Sqaured would suit many face types from small to large as they are perfect medium sized. As for the competition between what is better the legendary Juliet or the New X Squared. Well that's just too hard for me to make at this point. The Juliet were a masterpiece and so are the new X Squared! That's all I can say.

Frame: Polished Carbon
Lens: Black Iridium Polarized

Oakley was wise to include their latest X-Metal frame color in their newest X-Metal lineup. Polished Carbon is arguably the greatest frame color and matches any and all lens options available, while polarization adds to the desirability of this pair. Extended coverage via both the periphery and under the eye come standard with X Squared, and the familiar flex couplers and temple shocks provide a customized fit. After seeing this frame in person, you might just want to add a second pair to your collection for customization.

These are the best X-Metals yet!! I was always disappointed that Oakley did not make a Polarized lens for the X-Metal XX and these are the answer. Although they fit more snugly than the XX, they provide even more lens coverage. The sculpted earstems are a nice touch as well. Very nice....

It’s really hard to follow up a masterpiece; hard to best what many might consider the pinnacle of something. For Oakley, that pinnacle and masterpiece is the Juliet-which many consider from an overall design/performance/aesthetic perspective to be the greatest sunglasses ever made. It’s the benchmark the company has been chasing (and failing to reach) for a decade…..until now.

The X Squared is incredible. The first time I put them on, I was blown away in a way I haven’t felt since the first time a pair of Juliets touched my face. In many regards I look at the X Squared as a “Juliet 2.0” because many of its unique design elements “fix” some annoyances I have with the Juliet which, while iconic and special, still feels like the 10 year old dinosaur it is. I have argued for years that Oakley should do a minor revision of the Juliet in a 2.0 form while still manufacturing the original…but so far they have not. For now, the X Squared is a worthy substitute that both evolves the existing X Metal heritage and stands alone enough to be distinctive.

First of all, the XS looks AWESOME on the face and I am still astounded how great these look on my face. I personally feel they look better on my face than the Juliet; I will have to wear both on back to back days for a few months to get a true read on that, but on first impression the XS just looks a little better in every way. The orbitals are the perfect sweep, cut and size: slightly above eyebrows, just enough above cheekbones even when laughing and they sweep back past the eyes perfectly. Oakley obviously did massive research on the male face when designing the XS. I put them on and they feel like an extension of my face vs. something on my face; they feel cool, substantial and rock solid. The look is aggressive and masculine…like you could take on the world; you feel good wearing these. Yes, they are heavy for a pair of sunglasses…but last I checked THAT WAS THE POINT OF OWNING AN X METAL. If featherweight is what you want, get something from the Jacket line.

As noted above, several aspects of the XS design improve on what I consider to be weak areas of the Juliet design. First off, the earstems have been shortened a little and redesigned to be less rounded so that the earsocks stay on and he ends don’t fry like they do on the Juliet. They also use an interesting design in the earstem that is, to my eye, nothing more than a slightly less extreme hammerstem vs. the Juliet hammerstem. This provides a better fit for those of us with medium heads because the earstem end doesn’t just arc back and INTO your skull; it arcs back, moves in at the hammerstem part and then lies flat on side of your head.

Second (and I know some will not appreciate this as I do), they have removed he rivets that go through the nosebridge. I know…many people love those rivets and so do I BUT the biggest issue with my Juliets is the loosening that I cannot fix myself. It’s a bit annoying to pay $300 plus for something and then having to ship them off for 2 or 3 weeks at $40 a pop just to get them tightened. With the XS, you can loosen and tighten yourself (and I already have) making them lower maintenance. I am curious what will happen in terms of loosening over time; the Juliet rivets are odd and I have never been able to figure out exactly how they tighten and why therefore they loosen. With the XS it’s clear they are using tiny T-screws which, from my experience in other uses, are pretty sturdy in most uses.

The pricing structure of the XS is on par with recent increases in the Juliet line (after the shift to Hydrophobic in Spring 2009). The Plasma/Ice I purchased retails for $350 with pricing topping out (as usual) with the Fire Polarized. Much has been made of the inclusion of a case and what a deal that is. I don’t personally see it as a deal. It’s nice not to have to go get a case, but I don’t think you are saving any money. Manufacturing costs for the XS are pretty close to that of the Juliet from what I can see and if you compare MSRP for the two, equivalent models for the XS are EXACTLY $25 more than the Juliet, which is the price of the included case.

If I have any quibbles with the XS, it’s not with the design but rather several aspects of the initial offerings for the model. First off, as always, I am not pleased that Oakley takes a year to offer replacement lenses. I know that they are trying to generate revenue on the first release, but one way or another you have to get a frame and, as in my case, I wanted the Ice and I wanted it in Polarized but I have to wait until probably late 2010 to purchase them. Secondly, the XS is little heavy on the Plasma frame color. I’m not a huge fan of any one frame type in the X Metal lines; all my X Metals have been Carbon or Plasma, but Polished is nice and with the XS you pay the upcharge for Fire Polarized…and get a Plasma frame vs. a Polished frame on the Juliets and that doesn’t make a lot of sense to me.

Ultimately, the X Squared represents the return of Oakley to not only what it does best, but what made the company so cutting edge and beloved by its fans: edgy, innovative designs with undeniable functionality. It’s not a huge departure from its X Metal kin, but it’s new, unique and special enough to do what they did to me: cause you to HAVE to own a pair…and maybe more than one pair. Is it another Juliet? Not sure; it’s hard to dethrone a legend. I can say this though: the XS is really close…its right there. And I can’t think of any greater compliment than that.

I first saw the X Squared at HQ, and i had to have it! Pefect combo, polished carbon w/ blck iridium polarized. My favorite lens. The fit is similar to a juliet but has a fresh look w/ the squarish len cut. The quality is solid and worth every penny. I like the hammered earstems w/ the special "o" detail on it. I seem to wear these more than my juliets now. They seem a little snugger than juliets too.

I have been waiting to get these for a bit, and I finally did. I love the fit, and comfort. the arms seem to be a lot shorter than Juliet, which allow me to wear on my head for long periods of time. They also have a really unique and distinctive look, they scream Oakley. I bought it with Black Iridium lenses in plan to swap it out with something else in the future. Awesome addition to my X-Metal collection.

A great addition to the X-Metal family. These fit my medium/large head like a glove. They are lightweight, durable, comfortable, and look great. They are everything an X-Metal is supposed to be.

Their only downfall is that, well they aren't the original Romeo or X-Metal XX. These two frames are by far my favorite from the X-Metal line, but since there are no polarized lens options, I have no use for them. The other members of the X-Metal line are simply too small with the exception of the Romeo 2.0. I'm not a fan of half frame X-Metals, so the X-Squared works best for me. I finally have an X-Metal that meets all of my needs.

My brother bought one of these, today it arrived. So I had to fit it too. This one fits smaller head perfectly, perfect for my head and has an amazing eye coverage. They feel way more sturdy than the Juliets IMO.

And of course the design, just awesome with that double O's in the earstems. Simply hot.

These really remind me of a square Juliet. I'm quite anxious to try a pair on. The Juliets have always been just a bit small for my head, and always fit pretty tight. I have a sneaking suspicion that these are going to to be vying with the XX for my favorite X-Metal.

Edit:
Just picked up a pair. The fit is just a bit bigger than the Juliet, and just a bit smaller than the XX. They Really do remind me of an X-Metal Twitch. They come with the coin and an x-metal soft vault, but are unnumbered.

The debut of Half X failed to impress most consumers, and many anticipated Oakley's next venture into the X-Metal line. The wait is finally over. X Squared picks up many design elements from its incredible predecessor, the Juliet, yet also brings new design elements to the table.

The first noticeable difference between the Juliet and X Squared is physical lens size. X Squared provides additional coverage, and the orbitals - although somewhat reminiscent of the Juliet - introduce a refined, squared-off look, further featuring a number of angular facets. Flex couplers have also been incorporated, but the telltale X-Metal "rivets" on the nosebridge have been eliminated. Instead, the flex couplers are secured from the "inside" of the nosebridge with what appear to be hex bolts. Nosebombs are still interchangeable with an extra set included, but the temple shocks have been slightly redesigned to provide a "one size fits all" standard. The earstems, too, resemble the Juliets at the temple, but the rest of their architecture has been restructured with an almost paper-thin and eloquently designed midsection that still maintains amazing strength thanks to Oakley's proprietary alloy.

Overall, I think the size of this pair is just slightly large and I do miss the standard "rivets" that marked the nosebridge of nearly all previous X-Metals. Nonetheless, there is no denying that the X Squared has made a grand entry into the ranks of X-Metal, and this piece maintains the heritage of the X-Metal line while also incorporating an impressive arsenal of innovative design elements. Well done, Oakley.
