Searching for Oakley History
Im a collector (started serious in 2010), with over 20 Xmetals, and 80+ glasses in total. Have 2 TB1's and a Holeshot too.
I love vintage stuff, Eyeshade, Zeros etc.
Long time member on oakleyforum.com, and got the invite from Dann.

Finally. Elite pieces of today, to pair with the Xmetal "elites" of yesteryear..

WHY do they love recycling old frame names that are NOTHING like the current model? Looks more like the half wire / razrwire..

awesome, super excited for this one.

woah. more shots of the military eyeshade please...
Aug 23, 2013 5:46 AM
dope! those last few shots are of the sonic welding process?

i found the JFL to be a solid design, just a shame it fits quite tight and doesnt give. materials wise its more "innovative" than the other recent releases,( frogskin/holbrook clones) but then again, Rayban have been doing carbonfiber arms/alu frame for years now...
little bird tells me the Mad Scientist designs will return... let us hope that day doesnt dissapoint.

it makes sense that by "4th gen" (dropped serials altogether) they had most of the discoloration issues worked out in gen3, and they dropped the serials just because they were producing in alot larger quantities. kind of a shame really..
also, I frequently refer to the frames with frame size on the arms as "Last gen".
so looking at it from 2 perspectives you can be anal like me, and split the different "Gens" everytime something changes, OR, call everything from "B" serial onwards "Gen 3".

this is the "method" i use. the plasma line is the easiest to understand the changes.
1st - 'bone' matte white, serial P 123456
2nd - dull satin silver, serial P 123456 A
3rd - bright satin silver (more "polished"), serial P123456B
(in some cases, there is a "C" generation in here)
4th - Serial numbers dropped. frame surface stays fairly similar
5th - Slight change in hue, but finish is same. frame sizes stamped at serial location (left arm)
so knowing what generation a certain pair is (by number, ie, first, second, etc) you need to know how many generations of that specific colorway were made. Eg the XG's ran with 1st, A, B and no serial. but the plasma juliet (in some iterations) had up to 6 generations. - so a "blank frame" isnt a specific generation for that model, but represents a specific generation according to time.

anyone know what this one is?

i guess im with most when i say that ive slowed down too...after hitting my only major goal (one of every Xmetal model in the Xmetal colorway), and then some, i went looking for the "cool" vintages - eyeshade, mumbo/gen1 M, Splice, Scar, Racing/Water jacket etc, but havent really fixated on a set "List". I tried doing the Zeros not that was getting steep way quick, so i lost interest. I do keep a couple around just cos.
the first sort of nudge for me was when Xmetals stopped... then the PB2 losing its elite icon, and the multitude of "collectors" frogskins... it was all losing that uniqueness. Like many, vintage is now the way for me, but havent really been "on the hunt". ive got most of what i want.. maybe a couple more pairs in colorways that i would use more often (racing Jacket, eyeshade etc), but thats it for now

Kudos dann for doing this, the goggles are a much overlooked aspect. They do have some amazing prints and some awesome designs.

Hippiebob, what did those steampunk corry shepeard ones go for?
Mar 11, 2013 10:13 AM
yeah agreed, ive seen smith optics lens like that

imo they should fit in the older Mframes, because thats what they were designed for! but the extended lens of the hybrid does make it tricky to line it up right..

ive scanned that barcode Dann. i think you were using the wrong coding system, its a code 39 encoded.
SKU is... drumroll:
btw you dont have that in the database yet =))
watch out for a new iphone barcode scanner my friend invented called DigiBar. ive got the prototype currently and it auto-detects the barcode encoding type, which is awesome.
btw, any other barcodes you guys need scanned, just pm me a picture either here or facebook (or we can get a thread going)

one guy had his juliets orbital crushed when it got run over by a car, so i wouldnt try to put the strength to the test.
not much more to add besides the mentioned pointers... and yeah, i really want to know the specific alloy composition of Xmetal too, but i doubt we will. its proprietary information and i dont think they would want rayban copying it..

heres me in a subzero 2n

regarding the barricade concept drawings - i think the most badass one was the Mframe with a rubber attachment that made it a full frame sunglass. that looked seriously cool. Dann, you got a pic of it?

I can clarify, sorry
Half Jackets have this - Black Persimmon transition. Its really amazing. it starts out with a persimmon base with a black iridium coating. with exposure to UV, the Persimmon gets darker, almost to a VR28 black iridium lens.
i absolutely love it, and they look killer too.
