I couldn't find the part that mentions the third rendering of the visor, but perhaps they were linking to the Oakley commerce site because, at that time, Oakley had a page dedicated to the X-men movie. On that page, you have various pictures along with a option where you can have a full view of the visor.

It used to pop up a new window with a flash site in it. It would show different sketches of the visior O had come up with. 3 of them. It had pullouts and a few other little info tidbits.

Hey Oak. Sorry thats just my crappy typing skills showing themselves. I read either there or in another article (I did a google search RE the visor after seeing the visor post) that o.com used to have a 3 dimensional display of the visor that could be looked at from all angles.

Was just wondering if anyone had access to it.

Ah. I thought the Wayback Machine archive would have it, but it doesn't anymore. Hopefully someone will indeed have it, but I doubt it.

Would this explain why my new "Ichiro" Juliets have no serial number? I got them off eBay (bigbagusa) and I was a bit alarmed when I saw no serial number. Somebody please put my mind at ease!!!

yeap, the new ones don't have serials on it. a friend bought a carbon juliet recently and i didnt' find any serials on the frame. everything else on the frame is still the same though.

i don't know if this is a new thing or not, but the ice iridium coating on the polished juliet has purplish mirror, while i remember seeing the plasma ice ones on a store with the blue mirror(no purple).

Yeah, the realm of blue iridium has gone a bit crazy. Between Blue, Ice, +-Polarized, Violet, Blue Black ... then add in that the old blue iridium (like Sub Zero) seems different than the newere blue iridium. Crazy stuff. Looking through the 2004-2005 catalog I picked up a few weeks back at the o-store, they had a listing of lens options on the back pages and I think there were 51 different lens options for eyewear listed.

Official response as to why there are no more serial numbers on X-metals:

"we no longer put serial numbers on any of our X-metals. Originally when the X-metals came out they were going to be in limited numbers, the demand and popularity was so great that we continued to make them. It was decided that the serial number was no longer needed."

that is such a lame excuse.
we want serial numbers back for security and uniqueness reasons.
who cares if they are eventually 20 characters long.

well i think we now realise that even though the similar price tag oakley dont regard O-luminum as special as X-metal cos we didnt get different nose bombs, special box or a coin.

LAME!!!!

More info from a different source:

"Oakley X-Metal frames will no longer have serial numbers etched on the arm due to monetary reasons. We have found an easier and more efficient way to track our X-Metal frames."

How they track it is confidential, unfortunately.

also, there really isn't a great deal of room on the earstem of a Romeo 2 for a serial number - certainly not if the text size remained the same, i'm going to go and have a little look for the hidden tracking device now... will let you know what I find!

How 'bout an embedded microchip? That would explain the huge price hike.

Juliets and the rest have lost there serials as well dont forget.
Maybe there marked with something like a UV pen that only shows up under a UV light?

but why?
if they did do the UV thing then that just makes it harder for people to register their glasses with oakley.
surely oakley want people to register them?
surely a chip would be way way more expensive than laser etching so i doubt its that.

I'd believe that it made good cost/benefit sense to Oakley to forget the serial numbering. I was never able to gain any special assistance by offering up my serial #, it was always a matter of sending them in. So since Oakley was operating under a "send it in for review" basis, they had no real need to number each one.
Of course, we end up being a bit of the losers. No more feeling special about our serials. :( Of course, just got my carbon Romeo 2's ... and I feel pretty special even without the serial #.

Well, one thing the elimination of serial numbers will do, IMO, is make the already existing SN-etched glasses more collectable.

When I bought my new Romeo 2's, the chick said that the serial number was on the box. I didn't check at the time and I don't keep the boxes (tisk tisk). Can anyone confirm whether or not Oakley is numbering the R2's on the box?

Yeah, I think the serial number is on the box. I've only ordered one X-metal from Oakley directly, but I noticed the SN on the glasses corresponds with the ~A123456 (or ~Axxxxxx) number on the box. However, most x-metals I've bought from stores don't have matching numbers because they usually have multiple pairs of a sunglass and don't bother to make sure everything matches up.

In short, yeah, I think you can tell the SN from the box.
