Just something to consider. If B&L hadn't started this creative trend back in '36 What would sunglasses had evolved from?

I figure the shape would have been round (P3 style eyewear) or octagonal for a bit longer until someone solved the need for greater downward coverage (which the B&L aviator did). Most specs and tinted glasses/sunglasses (amber, black, brown, blue, green) in the 19th Century tended to be round in shape. The 1950s were really the decade when sunglasses started taking on different shapes, intro to cat eyes,more squared lenses, etc.

So my guess is that round sunglasses will be the dominant fashion shape for metal sunglasses in lieu of aviators,

Thanks for the kind comments. They really help keeping the motivation up. With social media and commercially designed discussion boards so prevalent, I'm happy that at least a proper database is something that I can still provide that is useful and unique to this site. Also thanks to all who help contribute to the database. It's overwhelming at times.

I have ventured into other stuff. As of late, I’ve been wearing more of the non-oakley items. I don’t have collections of these per se, but a few of each with the exception of Dita. I have Maui Jim’s, Persol, Chrome Hearts, and as mentioned DITA. Working on picking up some more Dita frames.

Nice stuff, Bobby. I’ve been wearing DITA for 10 years now and they’ve become my favourite eyewear brand. I love Chrome Hearts as well; CH is always in my rotation since the eyewear is fantastic. MJ and Persol are cool too; I wear them sometimes.

Other brands I would recommend are:

TAVAT - cool industrial design, especially with their SoupCan and SpamCan stuff. They are fun to wear, but they do wear front-heavy because of the amount of stainless steel in the orbitals.

Matsuda - I adore Matsuda frames and love wearing them, especially the stuff since the company re-started a few years back, but their best eyewear are re-releases rather than anything new and innovative. Very ornate detailing. If you like Chrome Hearts for its detailing, you’ll like Matsuda for their detailing as well. They are the company best known for the sunglasses Sarah Connor wears in Terminator 2.

Parasite Design - I like them because of their unique design language. I don’t wear or buy too many of them, however, since the frames are flimsy IMO and don’t wear well for me.

Randolph Engineering - Not the best around, but well-known for its military connection and is decent for its price point.

Initium - I only have one of their frames and they’re ok, but I thought it may be up your alley as a big Tony Stark fan. They’ve been in several MCU movies and also partnered with Police for the glasses in Captain America: Civil War.

Jacques Marie Mage - JMM is a great brand with some very cool frames. They don’t work for my head because the ones I did own fit for narrow faces, even though the vertical sizing of the lens is large. So, the size of the lenses look good but the arms press into my temples. It gets annoying after a while. Still, JMM is a great brand that is very collector-friendly. Each SKU is limited to 250-500 units and will not exceed that number. It is exclusive in that regard.

He also wears a matte black All-In near the end of Avengers: Age of Ultron as well. RDJ wore the London Calling model in Iron Man 2, too. The Initium Concept 2 was in Spider-man: Far From Home (though some are saying it is the Roy Tower Concept 2 that Initium just recreated).

Another brand I'm keeping an eye out on is Maybach Eyewear. Yes, the brand is connected to the car. Extremely nice finishing on their pieces; I kinda see them as an upscale Cartier for eyewear in that they use precious metals. Cartier's eyewear is extremely bland but is very expensive, while Maybach has very detailed finishing and even more absurdly priced (their Joker I model in all 18k gold is 21k Euro).

Maybach has some great stuff, but their design is less unique and takes cues that other brands have made popular (such as the floating lenses on Dita's Midnight Special or arms from Leisure Society, Matsuda or Chrome Hearts). I know that, since brands are getting all the top Japanese manufactures to work with them, it's getting impossible to encroach on each others' design elements, but I think if Maybach took their design in its own direction, they'll be an even better stand-out eyewear design house.

I promised myself that my next Rx frame would be an Oakley. I love the look of the Deadbolt, Tie Bar and Money Clip, but I ultimately couldn’t do it. While the fit was ok, it wasn’t great. I also wasn’t impress with the build quality; the way I wear things and my luck with Oakley Rx, I’d destroy those Oakley frames within a year.

So I went back with DITA and paired their Lindstrum frame with Zeiss lenses w/brown Signature Gen 8 Transitions. The Lindstrum is now part of my regular Rx lineup rotation. Just a pic I found online but gives you an idea I’d what they look like:

I'm sure DITA will sell you the lenses even if they don't offer the entire package, which is surprising since it was likely in their Top 10 most in-demand pairs for 2019. I have also been told that the person that customized the EDITH lenses (or FRIDAY lenses for Avengers: Infinity War, I can't remember) and other Tony Stark lenses, "Tanya at Prop Specs", has the colour codes for the movie lenses and does make them available.

Speaking of the Tony Stark DITAs, there is a video being produced about them that'll tell the story of how the pair came to be on the Big Screen and will have interviews with Tanya, Russell Bobbitt (the MCU propmaster), and others. The teaser:

The eyewear is mostly crafted out of precious metals like gold and platinum (with some stuff featuring buffalo horn), and starts at around $8-9k, with most being on the $13k range, and the limited stuff with precious gems being $75k to over $120k. The sunglasses also use Zeiss lenses.

Way too bedazzled for my tastes, but there is exceptional craftsmanship and fantastic quality materials being used.
