Man i want a pair. But the going rate of 1k for something that sold at $140 is just crazy. I hope the C100 doesnt got the same way.

I can't really see the C100 going the same way. The retail price on thos buggars are just too high to make a great secondary market profitable.

I didn't buy mine to sell either. I just can't stop thinking about all the pairs of "O" I could buy if I sold them (or bills I could pay...) I love the way they look (microbag and box included) but gascans aren't my favorite. Don't get me wrong--I really like them--They can just slide off my head fairly easy due to lack of unobtanium.

What I think none of us understand is that the DF's changed our hobby forever. The inflated price and lack of availibility makes non-Oakley people start collecting. They jump on the bandwagon in hopes of a big score. They can't get the DF's so they are willing to pay more for things they can get just to make sure they get something that might increase in price. Which in turn bring out the scalpers who will gladly inflate the price inorder to take our money. This whole thing is starting to remind me of the sports card trade back in the late 80's/early 90's. People were willing to pay outragest prices for cardboard. Now none of that cardboard is worth anything.

The DF's have really made me re-evaluate my hobby. I am really thinking about getting out of it. It was more fun when I could order what I want when it came out and if I missed it well, that was my fault. Now, you can't even get a chance unless you know someone who knows someone.

I have been collecting Oakley's since the 80's. I started collecting sunglasses because Oakley made the grips that were on my Motorcycles. Now it's becoming more stressful then fun.

Well said. I'm glad someone also sees the danger. I drew the same comparison in another thread but with comics instead of sports cards. When the Gascan and all its analogues go out of style and discontinued, the Flores GCs' popularity and impact (along with its price) will move to the background with little consequence. The impact on Oakley collecting due to the appearance of speculators, however, will remain for years to come.

Let's just hope the retailers don't jump into the speculation and buy tons of product that they think may somehow increase in value. Doing that will just ensure they end up with tons of product they won't be able to sell. That's the other part of the formula that kills collecting.

The reason I say it's different is because the DF's have a story. They got pulled because of who really knows what. The Juliets have no really story. Just demand at the time. With only around 60 or so in existance, that makes it the Hornus Wagner of Oakley collecting. With Juliets the most limited is around 1000 units. That's means 1000 people who could become tried and off load them. With only 60, well....

Well, there are only about 500-600 Carbon Ichiros and less than 300 Brown Juliets out there based on the existing serial numbers. The real difference between the Juliets and the Flores GC is that they didn't suffer the same amount of speculator demand. Oh, they had their own speculators, but they didn't have the huge amount of hype that the Flores GC has. Their level of speculation was a simmer while the Flores GC was an explosion.

You can make brown Juliets, you can make Iricho Juliets. That is why they might have fallin off. With BTO, some replacement Lens kits you can make anything you want.

You will not be able to make DF's Gascans.

Im a huge Gascan and Oildrum Fan. And would love to have these for that reason only. Not because they rare or anything other than being a sick air of Gascan. Its just really crap that a super cool colour way was re-called, no matter the reason. i dont see what the differance is, if 10 were sold or 10 000. Oakley made them and therefore will always be linked to David Flores, no matter what.

Do the numbers really make Oakley's hands cleaner?

Well, not that this is the proper place for it, but I do think it makes Oakley's hands cleaner in the public's eye. I mean, Oakley's not omniscient or anything and do make mistakes, so they needn't necessarily know about what Flores did. However, the fact that they took steps to rectify the situation (or at least distance themselves from it) shows they're committed to their image and wouldn't support something they don't believe in. Had Oakley continued with the delivery of the 5,000 DF2s, it would suggest to the public that what Flores did was OK in their eyes.

Yes, it does suck that a cool pair of glasses had to be recalled, but the alternative would be worse for Oakley.

As far as it goes for individual collectors....well, that's another story with different set of circumstances and a different perspective. I'll leave it at that.

heck yes it does, what they did by recalling the glasses and destroying them is as stand up as you can get. They had no clue what he was about to do, the deal was all in place before the unfortunate events took place. The whole deal really sucks, but with Flores being so well know right there were HQ is, the decesion to do what they did was probley the best and only thing to do. If Flores was from say Indiana or Kentucky(just a reference) it might not have been such an ordeal but with him right on there doorstep it makes it a more fragile situation.

Just to get the record straight. I have no problem with what Oakley did with their product. I just think the DF's have really changed our hobby. It's now becoming an investment.

I totally agree Thom, but with these kinds of prices you will not wear these investments... When a simple pair of Gascans become an investment, would you dare to wear it with a possiblity of damaging it?
I still want to wear the sunglasses that I buy, not try to keep it worth the same as when I bought them. They should be used, it still a consumer product.

to put it simple, there is only one way to describe the DF2, quanity and demand. Plain and simple, they would have loved to destroy them all and say they never existed at all. That was impossible to do with the events happening so late and close to the release. There are only a few available and there are more than a few that want them. That will explain the ballon in price. If the release of these would have went as planed, these would have been just like the supreme frogskins which are doing about $250 or so on the bay. Don't expect these prices on all of the LE releases that are coming up, it was just a freak incident, plain and simple. It sucks that piece was so cool though!
