I'm looking for a way to make a Carbon Penny frame, if anybody has tips on ways to do that, please forward the ideas ! Thought I'd give you a glimpse of how the initial surgery went about...
The patient:
The Mad Scientist:
The tool of destruction:
Ruby Penny came for moral support:
One last kiss:
Ready for sugery:
Taking the lenses off:
Taking the Unobtainium off:
Taking the earstems off:
Taking the nosebridge off:
The Mad Scientist at work:
Ruby Penny is affraid...is she up next ?:
The OTHERS came as soon as they could, but it was too late:
It's a dark day for all Pennys around the world:
The Mad Scientist is proud of his achievement:
29 pieces of art (including Unobtainium):
HIGH DEFINITION OBSSESSION:
All ideas and suggestions are more than welcome, I will do a custom cut on either an M Frame, Juliet or Half Jacket lens...tricks to do that are appreciated. Hope you enjoyed the surgery !
Nice pics! It hurts just seeing that. I sure hope this is a happy ending story and Humpty Dumpty (or Penny) gets put back together again. Truly a mad scientist....though this mad scientist seems to have created more problems than solved. ;-D
HAHAA freesh i ;uaghed harder in those last few minutes than i have in a long time... on the carbon penny idea.. did you take it to an autobody shop? they may be able to powdercoat it... tell rupy penny that I'm sorry for her loss :(
I've never had one stripped like that before either & I love my pair too much to do those sick stuffs the Mad Scientist had done.. Alex its an interesting story!! Funny shyt! Hahaha... I hope they will live happily ever after eventually! Good luck! (^-^)_b
That looks more like an autopsy than surgury! That's the most detailed accounting of inspired madness I've ever seen! How scary was it to pound those rivets out?
eeek! It is harder to put the springhinge/earstem back than anything else! Good luck and hopefully whatever coating you put, it's thin enough so that it won't rub off where the metal meets metal. I had worse experiments that I won't even dare show! To get the maximum binding capability of the coating over a polished surface is extremely challenging.
p.s. glad you work where you work, and are able to get stuff cheap!
True, the damn spring hinge is quite challenging to put back into place, but I've done it a few times at work to clean up/tune up some customers' Pennys, so I know I can do it.
I'll give my friend at warranty/repair department a ring to see what's his thoughts on ways to alter the color coating on the frame...probably need to somehow take off the polish coating, otherwise it'll definitely be too thick to just cover it with some other color.
Any ideas for lense/unobtainium color combinations ?
FTR: I wasn't trying to rain on your parade Alex, I was just trying to be funny. I'm as interested as everyone is to see how your project goes.
It takes an equal amount of bravery and insanity to pull of a complete custom like this - the same combination that Jim had when he began the company!
Now, if you could somehow create a Carbon frame out of that Polished Penny and slap some perfectly-cut Emerald Slate lenses in there with the light green unobtainium, I might just have to reconsider my anti-custom attitude. (Although, I am not as opposed to customs as I make myself out to be).
Sounds like a good combo Dr. J, I think there is a standing suggestion on the table now freesh. . .
Maybe one day I will go crazy enough to try this, I do so badly want to make my carbon/polished custom come to life, but I think my operation skillz are still in pre-med.
Alex, how about u make 'side-blinders' for them and (i know this might sound lame) put Ruby lens in there.. I personally like Ruby lens to go with Carbon frame (^-^)
can titanium be anodised? that would be a way of putting a thin coat on the frame, most auto custom workshops can get this done, this reminds me, i have a pair of mars in the same state, waining to be brought back to life...
Does anyone remember the final product of polishing an x-metal finished frame? Darren's mars reference made me think of a polished mars. . . Definately very over the top I would say. . .
Will it ever get back to its original state again I wonder. Perhaps this could be the answer to tightening loose flex couplers - taking them apart and fitting them back again.
You've got hell lot of courage there attempting the autopsy. Nonetheless nice step by step pics. Oakley keeps hammering at me that self-damage products are not covered in the warranty. The furthest I went is removing the earstems. Big mistake! I could never get the washer back in and had to make peace with the fact that my earstems are now forever loose.
