replaces the iPod Mini, and is flash based as opposed to an hard drive. 2GB for $199 and 4GB for $249.

http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/

personally, it's ultra slim size factor, colour screen, and the fact that it's flash based is very appealing, but at the current prices as the 4GB and 6GB Mini, consumers take a hit on storage capacity. seems like a step forward in one respect but a step back in another. Apple should keep the current Mini alongside the Nano.

that said, a 2GB Nano does make an appealing alternative to a 1GB Shuffle...

So does this mean the price on the mini is going to go down? or is it being completly pulled off as i do not see it on Apples site any more. Now I love Oakley as much as all of us here do but this looks like another reason as why it makes no sense for your average non Oakley fanatic NOT to get thumps.Oakley really needs to go balls to the wall and impress the heck out of the MP3 market with thump 2 to even try to make the whole mp3 glasses thing work. How many of you have actually seen people wearing thumps out in the world? Bong you ride the subways every day how many thumps have you ran into? You could not swing a dead cat in a subway car without hitting someone rocking an Ipod. When i use my thumps on the subway people have come up to me and asked me what are those I tell them, they ask how many songs, I tell them then they ask how much $$, I tell them and the answer I get 99.99% of the time is "Dude are you nuts why didnt you just get an ipod?". I just think the MP3 glasses thing is not really going to work with your average consumer.

Ipod mini is no more. Nano is its replacement. Now, if you can find it from resellers, that's another matter.

I feel that iAudio/iRiver is better.
They have got BBE technology which is used by recording artistes in studios.
Good bass , just like a portable hi-fi system even without shure headphones.

And Apple does it again...another awesome product. I'll be sticking with my mini for the future, but if your new to the iPod market the NANO sure is a top buy in my book.
I some way it's what i really expected when the shuffle was released

The nano looks pretty damn cool, although there are now so many ways of carrying aroung 1GB of music! PSP, Mobile Phone, MP3 player, sunglasses (T2 :) the choice is endless, so how do you decide... thats my dilemma atm.

I'm so loving this and I'm so glad I held out on teh Shuffle. I couldn;t decide between the 1gb Shuffle or the 4gb Mini and my wrestling between the two has paid off. I'm going after the 4gb Nano. In about two weeks after my next SGH check. I can;t believe it's a flash drive either. I can still see the 6gb Mini hanging around though but the 4gb will be gone. Too bad I won't be able to take advantage of the color screen showing cover art since I'm gonna cram it full of live shows.

The Creative Micro Zen Photo cost the same and is 8gig. It has an organic color LED too. It is a bit thicker at .677" as compared to the nano at .27".

nano - $249
4gb
3.5 x 1.6 x.27"
Syncs with Outlook, Calendar & Tasks
14 hour battery

zen photo - $249
8gb
3.268 x 2.008 x.677"
FM receiver w/ability to record radio
Voice Recorder
Syncs with Outlook, Calendar & Tasks
15 hour battery

So for me the battle continues on which to get.

the $50 price difference is enough for me to not care and go straight up to the 30 gig. Though I'd have to cut back on the music downloads or it'd fill up too soon.

For the amount of time I can actually block out the world & listen to music, the 128 Thump would be more than enough space :^(

Jose, i rock the iPod on the subway myself... a second generation 10 gigger. but it's true that half the people in the subway are using an iPod, and i've never seen one person wearing a pair of Thump. i'd buy one already if the fit me... :(

as appealing as the Nano is, i'll stick with my second generation 10 gigger and my 1GB Shuffle; and i carry both to work everyday. thing with the Nano, i can't use it as a simple jumpdrive like i can with the Shuffle.

Nik is right wires bite the big one I think thats what makes the thumps so attractive i just do not seehow oakley is really going to make the thump a marketing succes when you got players like the nano out there.

I have the 512 MB shuffle and it suits me perfectly; the Nano can't replace it because I can beat up the Shuffle and keep it in any sort of pocket. The Nano is too big for some of my pockets and I'd worry about scratching the screen - which means an additional case for it.

That said, the Nano sure is enticing, much more than the other iPods - I do want one.

I read some where that iRiver was a Russian export in my research for mp3 players, any truth to that?

Also, I have bought an mp3 player because of the difficulties my brother had with his 20 gig arcos, menu sucked, it broke once and it was heavy.

Now in the market for one I won't even consider any ram based mp3 player under 1 gig.
So unless the thump is upgradeable (I can’t believe I am going to say this about an Oakley product) I am going to have to pass.
Also do any of these player use proprietary encoding, in other words am I going to have to re-encode my entire collection for any of these.

Well, me and some other lucky 8000 other employees at my work place are going to receive this Ipod for free with a special engraving of our company's name. How nice of our CEO. oh by the way, he also sits in the board along with Steve Jobs =)

That's cool Cal. Me on the other hand, mine is on the way from Apple right now. 4gb Black. I can't wait for it to get here. It gives me just enough time to set up my music in iTunes here at the office seeing as home my laptop is caput until Apple sends it back to me.
