cacatman: Cacat Man
How long have you been a collector of Oakley items?
Collecting seriously for the last 3 years
How did you get into collecting Oakley?
Discovered O-Review which stirred my passion for Oakleys while I was looking for another pair of X-metals.
What is the first Oakley item you remember having?
Subzero #4 (Planet X/Blue) which I picked up from Cash Converters for $50 which broke into two when I face planted on the snowfields of Falls Creek, Australia.
What is your biggest Oakley regret? (if any)
Selling the first X-metal that I ever owned - a carbon Juliet with Black iridium.
What is your next Oakley purchase likely to be?
My next deal is likely to be 4 cabinets with a host of collectible posters, stands, poster frames and 60+ pairs of lenses. Just working through the details now.
What do you consider the "jewel" of your collection?
I guess I’d have to say an original Eyeshade skull trophy from an ex-employee or my recently acquired MotoGP Carbon Primes
How do you store/display your Oakley collection?
In Oakley Cabinets
Do you have a favorite Oakley retailer?
The local Oakley Vault
Do you customize?
Yes - Have rust decay, anodised green (“hulkâ€), stealth black, white, red, Captain America, and copper plated juliets, a stealth black XX, a custom Iron Man and “ichiro†polished carbon X-Squared clone, an infinite Hero Jawbone, a few other custom O-matter and Prizm and matte Dillon lenses custom cut for Juliet, Pennys, Racing Jacket Get 2 and Romeo 1.
What other Oakley products do you collect?
A few t-shirts, shorts, keyrings, drink bottles, Oakley stands, cabinets, money clips and carabiners. But no watches.
What other hobbies/collections/passions do you have?
Star Wars Lego (Ultimate Collectors Series)
What advice do you have for new Oakley collectors?
Ask lots of questions and give back to the community. Be nice to people who know less than you.
What do others think about your Oakley collection?
Non-Oakley people think I’m crazy.
What's your fondest/most astounding Oakley memory?
Meeting someone who was quite high up in Oakley Australia in my home town and being able to talk to him about some of his behind the scenes knowledge that he accumulated over the years. Also, getting a grail, which is a limited edition Juan Pelota (Lance Armstrong’s cyclocross alter ego) Jawbone (1 of 50) which had been signed by Lance Armstrong, himself.
Any final words?
Oakleys aren’t everything. It’s a hobby. That’s all. Have an eternal perspective on things….and be ready for it!
