Ok, so I took a pretty thorough look at the Gallery guys. Not impressed. As it stands now, we have 67 Galleries. Of those 67 I have scored 1/2 of them as 'brutal', 1/4 of them as 'okay', and another 1/4 as 'good'. What gives me the right to label a Gallery 'brutal', 'okay', or 'good' you ask? Take a look at mine and I think you'll see. Of the 67 Galleries going, I think close to 1/3 of them are abandoned. So, what's my point in all of this?

My point is we need to take better advantage of this great site feature. I encourage everyone to start a personal Gallery. Make haste for it isn't hard. Go to the Gallery section, click "add your picture to the gallery" and you are on your way. There has been loads of pics uploaded to the Latest Purchase thread as well as the PW Club lately, why not take a minute to load them into your Gallery too? We have a lot of cool photos that are buried in threads and we'll never see them again. Another great feature of the Gallery is the option to comment on people's photos.

So, I'm putting my foot down brothers! If you don't have a Gallery yet, get going. If you do have a Gallery but it is a disgrace, fix that shizzo. If you already have a great Gallery, keep it up.

Yours Very Truly,
The Doctor

One down, how many to go? I just told Josh that he needs to make sure he saves a picture of all the custom chops he does in his Gallery, or else risk losing them to the depths.

I would like to propose a motion for Ricks signature to be changed (for the purposes of this thread) from "The Doctor" to "The Teacher". Furthermore I propose that he be equipped with an electronic version of the BIG RED PEN that some of us became quite friendly with throughout highschool.

All those in favour say AYE!

Well, I've spoken to a few of you and I expect results!

Seriously, even if you can't get a Gallery together, at least tour other Galleries and leave some comments.

I want to get some buzz going on the Gallery because I want to get Dann to spend some time in the near future adding some features to the Gallery to make it even better than it already is. If no one is using the thing it makes it a harder sell.

i love the gallery, i love browsing through it every once in a while or when the forum is in a lull.

i haven't touched my gallery in a while, one reason is because i don't have a proper camera right now but mainly i don't have time being in school and all. however i do plan on updating it in the near future, as well as photographing a few stuff i haven't had the chance to.

anyhoo... i think the gallery is a great section in the O-Review. like Rick said, please tour it and add to it.

I'm a lousy photographer with no personal camera and a computer that's so outdated that it can't run photo-uploading software without hanging. That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

You can leave feedback for those of us that do live in the 21st Century though, right?

Just a note about getting your Gallery started. When you upload your first picture to the Gallery, be sure to NOT CLICK the box that says something about adding the picture to the general gallery. If you do click that box, the picture just goes into the general gallery. PM me if you need any help. I know a few of you have been adding photos but until you add that first one properly, you aren't really building a personal gallery.

Tell ya what, Rick. Relinquish those Ruby R2's to me, and I'll gladly stock my gallery with 100+ quality photos :-)

Seriously though, I haven't used the gallery because I find it a bit unwieldy. No disrespect to Dann at all, but it's just not as robust a feature as I'd like, especially against my beloved flickr stream, which is more flexible, searchable, and networkable than the gallery here. It's not something one person could ever hope to set up on his own; flickr is a big company maintained by a large team of people.

You can do both man! I do. Have your flikr too, but you could easily drop 20 of those cool photos you do into the gallery. I'm telling you, once we all get going on the gallery Dann will get excited about it and I have a feeling he'll think up all kind of ways to make it more exciting and fun to use. Basically, every time you post a pic to a forum you could quickly upload it to your gallery. Too many pictures are buried deep in the threads. It's a tragedy!

I'm glad you like my Ruby R2 - makes me even happier I have it!

Before you ask, of course I was logged in

I'll try again

edit
Once again, I didn't read what was written just before ... and of course, I checked the box "general gallery"

Well, there's no way I'm going to be able to touch what flickr does, even if I had the time. It is what it is. Any suggestions to make it better are welcome, but I don't have a team of people writing API's to interface into the system. This who site's written on some database code from 1999 and a stolen image script.

You don't give yourself enough credit man. I love the Gallery. I think once people give it a go, they'll see how much fun it is to build, as well as share with others.

Just to throw in my two cents, I remember when I first joined I read a blurb about saving space while uploading images. It was requested that an image of a new item first be uploaded to your Gallery. Then when adding the item to your Collection, you can link the image from your Gallery, and thus avoid uploading the image twice.

Honestly, it's the only reason I have any images in my Gallery, and I've stopped doing it all together. Rick, point your iron finger at me.

While this only applies to the basic shots of individual items that are used to show your Collection, it will certainly save some space. And with The Teacher's recent call to the masses, there may be a lot of duplicates generated. Hosts, is this still an issue?

You can also put your pics into the gallery and edit your collection pics to link them to the gallery.
I'll do this ASAP

The space issue is a lost cause at this point. However I do encourage linking collection pictures to the Gallery, don't feel the need to stick pictures in the Gallery out of habit, if you just want to put pictures in the Collection.

Just because I'm curious, how big (MB) is the database ?
