How many people have we brought over to Oakley & the O-Review with just our enthusiasm about the product & the site? If anyone could sell this idea collectively, it would be us!

We'd end up paying a premium for ours, but then again wouldn't we have paid a lot to get a prototype of the Sub Zero for example.

Hi guys,

I set up an email account to serve as a centralised focal point for ideas, submissions, thoughts and just general info.

I discussed it with Dann and he, along with the rest of the mods, the yet to be chosen coordinator and a few design people will have access to it.

Obviously It is not my intention to alienate anyone but thought it best to prevent too many cooks spoiling the broth for the moment until we figure out what is happening.

Send anything you can to:

oakleybook@yahoo.co.uk

I will do my best to organise any incoming mail until a main coordinator has been chosen/elected.

It would be a good idea for anyone who is participating to start by sending an e-mail to this address stating your:

talents
contacts/connections
available hard/software
any miscellaneous bits and bobs you think you can contribute

I will feed this into a spreadsheet, to be kept on the account and distributed where neccessary, so that the coordinator has a rough idea what resources are available. This will serve as a starting point and then we can get to work on this.

My only request for myself is inclusion in the x-metal section. Anything else is just gravy.

One more thing,

it might be a good idea to send in a nomination for who you think should take on the role of "master" coordinator.

Alternatively we could start up a seperate thread where we just post the name of our nominees?

Again, just all thoughts.

I dont want it to look like I am hijacking Mikes idea. I reckon a few of us have thought about this in the past but Mike is the one that grabbed hold of it and fed it into this machine so that we could all get our hands on it so, NICE ONE MIKE!

Personally, I think this is a great idea. I've never found any real literature about Oakley except for catalogs, ads and box inserts and that doesn't cut it. I'll help as much as I can, and I too would like to assist in the X-Metal section, or whereever I'm needed. I'm flexible. Let's get this sh*t rolling!!!

Wow, I love all you guys enthusiasm for this. I would like to contirbute. I'm good with words and such, I did a journalism degree at university. But if it is a case of 'too many cooks' I'm happy to step back and revel in the finished product.

A question though. A we planning to sell this book and make a profit off it? Even if we use our own pics and stuff, will Oakley like us making money off their products? This book, if it is good, I would love to give out to friends and the like, to really get them into Oakley. And I'd like my name in it!

But yeah, if we could get permission to put in every Oakley ad that Phil has that would be AMAZING!!

Well guys I'm away from the Computer for a few days, and you lot go Frakin Nuts....Sweeeeeeet!

i love the fact that there is so much interest in this book concept. I don't have the time to say much at this time, as I want to read everything, everyone has said. Once I've done that I'll pipe in with a few ideas. It may take me a few days as I'll be travelling again, but I'll see what i can do.

Damn.... this is gonna be so much fun!

There is a program for MAC called Aperture which you can order printed books and Apple will bind and send them directly to you. I've had a few printed and they look amazing and very profesional. They come in 3 different sizes with option of hard or soft cover.

http://www.apple.com/aperture/print/

A 20 page book that is printed front and back in color is $30 and the quality is amazing at 300dpi and up to 100 pages can be added.

Here are some page layout examples that I have done in the past.

Oh also, I feel we NEED to have the Oakley logo and all their ads all over this book. If we cover our a** with a copyright page and if we're not making a profit off the book we should be in the clear.

When I was contacted by Oakley about buying my domain, they said they had no problem with me keeping all the backgrounds and stuff I created online as long as it "remained in good taste" & there was no profit being made. Books get published all the time with combines logos and such and there in the clear as long as reference is given.

This book just wont seem complete with out some official images from Oakley.

just my 2 cents

Nice find Bob. Wow, $30 for 20 pages. So $150 for 100 pages is certainly reasonable for a nice quality book. Especially in full color. That would at least give us our own limited editions, and then we could approach distributors to release a wider scale one if that comes out to their approval.

I'd like to have ads in it, but the legality scares me. Full product ads are different than company logos and backgrounds. Just don't want to get in trouble. Worst case they just make us stop production though I imagine.

I'd like to contribute, but don't have much time to give...
i would be good at checking formatting continuity, i think that would be important - also my dad owns a company that does CD and DVD duplication, and specialises in business card sized cds, so if the book ended up under 50Mb, then maybe it could be distributed that way too, then they would only be about 70p ($1) each including label printing and everything.

(obviously not instead of the book but as an alternative and cheaper way of distribution)

I'm going to dig around an see what our risk is by using some of Oakleys Ads, and what process needs to be taken to give them credit.

I have that Aperture on my Mac and I'm going to try to come up with some layouts using it's book feature. It will also let you save PDF's of the book. It's so amazingly simple.

Will it allow imports from any other program. If others were to make some page layouts and then merge everything together in that program, would it be possible.

Whoa! Those aperture pages look really nice. Do you think it would break Oakley's rule since Apple would be making a profit off of it?

Found some things out with Apeture. Apple wont print the book unless you get permission from Oakley if we use their logo or ads. However, I may have some contacts that will get me around that issue since I work for Apple.

I'm at work now and I've been playing around with the program all day. It will with out a doubt be the best solution for printing. Everything is drag and drop. It's able to take jpg and RAW files, not files from Quark or InDesign. The program is intended to make a simple book. If we want it fancy, then we're going to have to be tricky with Photoshop like I have demonstrated in the following images.

Looking good Bob, whats everyones opinon on aperure then?

On a note of content I'd quite like to do a bit about the 'pure' titanium wire frames (T wires, Ti Xhairs etc) what do you all think?

The program doesn't have to be too complex. You certainly ended up with some nice layouts despite these 'obstacles'. All we really need is the ability to put in a background in, overlaying text and images with an alpha (transparency) layer. With that, we can be as creative as we want.
