d'oh! still not sure if Placebo's Meds is out in the US yet. still have not heard anything off the album yet so i'm keeping my hopes up. but so far nothing they did still tops Without You I'm Nothing.

Editors's Back Room i did buy, and it's quite good. like a mix of Interpol and The Killers with a different accent.

Morrissey, i'm not too fond of but after more than a year i'm finally kinda warming up to You Are the Quarry. at least it's a lot better than Maladjusted. i didn't even bother picking up Southpaw Grammar when it came out.

heard the new Pet Shop Boys single "I'm With Stupid." for the first time in history i'm not remotely impressed with their lead-off single. after the rockish (for PSB at least) moments of their last album Release, i know the duo wanted to go back to their synth roots but this one is way too retro cheesy, maybe it'll grow on me so we'll see.

Hey, I just wanted to join the discussion.

I hear a lot of music...so, here are some of the lp's I really like and that were released in the last months:

Rock (elektro rock):

The Bravery - The Bravery
Slut - All we need is silence
Liquido - Float
The Kills - No Wow
Queens of the stone age - Lullabies to paralyze
The Caesars - Paper Tiger's
The Aquabats - Charge
Gods Of Blitz - Stolen Horse
The Organ - The Organ
Blackmail - Blackmail
....

Punk/Hardcore:

Millencollin - Hardwood
Smoke Blow - German Angst
Smoke Blow - Dark Angel
Pennywise - The Fuse
The Revolvers - End of Apathy
Discipline - Downfall of the working man
...

HipHop/Crunk:

T.I. - King
Young Jeezy - Thug Motivation
Lil Wayne - Tha Carter 2
Juelz Santana - What the Game's been missing
Mike Jones - Who is Mike Jones?
Youngbloodz - Drankin Partners
The Game - G.A.M.E.
Kanye West - Late Registration
...

I don't think anyone here is interested in german rock or hiphop, correct?

Julien, The Bravery is an ace CD!

i finally picked up a copy of Placebo's Meds... the expensive limited edition with the bonus DVD. of course, the main reason why i opted for the limited was the fact it contains the band playing a duet with The Cure, both Robert Smith and Brian Molko singing on "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep." funnily enough, i haven't listened to the CD yet.

also picked up a remaster verion of Simple Minds' Sparkle in the Rain. it's my first full length foray into post New Gold Dream Simple Minds; and instead of sounding experimental, majestic, or subtle, it's all big and bombastic sounding. still, quite a good record though.

also bought Mark Gardener's These Beautiful Ghosts. as good as his first solo record is, i miss RIDE even more.

Hmm, just heard the track 'Atlantic' from Keane's new album 'Under The Iron Sea'. You're going to love it Bong! It's better than 'Is It Any Wonder?'. Really, really beautiful song. I would go as far to say it's one of their best.

You know Bong, i still need to look a little more into the Bravery and Keane and a few others you had for me.

This past week however (on a Grandaddy binge now that they called it quits):

Signal to Snow Ratio EP - the track MGM Grand is great
The Windfall Varietal - sold at gigs only new music sampler that was pulled by their record label after the first few thousand.
Sumday + bonus disc - wanted the live bonus disc.

ahh Grandaddy, i listened to Sophtware Slump and it's really really good. loved the mix between spacey, oblique tracks and straight ahead rock songs.

Neutral Milk Hotel's In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is really good too, but unfortunately nothing as immediately catchy as "Song Against Sex." maybe "Holland 1945" comes close.

so after listening to NMH, i dug out my old copy of Olivia Tremor Control's Black Foliage (who Jeff Magnum had a hand in), listened to it, and shoved it back into the deep depths of my CD collection. like the first time i listened to it, it's still way too esoteric and weird.

A lot of esoteric and weird came from the entire Elephant 6 collective. Even Aeroplane is an undertaking. "Song Against Sex" came from their first release which is nothing near Aeroplane, but the track is great. Aeroplane has the entire album long journey going for it with the few call outs. "Holland 1945" def hits the nail on the head there, as maybe "King of Carrot Flowers" and "Two Headed Boy pt1" will too. It's hard for me to not listen to it as a whole though.

Glad you liked Sophtware Slump. The Signal to Snow Ratio EP was a pre release to that. There's another Jeddy 3 poem on it and a grouping of songs that wouldn't have fit. MGM Grand is spectacular though. Look for it on the next mix for sure. Even Sophtware ends up being an inclusive album for the most part.

On Sumday things got poppier and less cohesive between songs because they had the need to start writing songs they could actually handle playing live. (I'll have an extra copy soon if you want the dupe?)

And after a year of reading that early GD fans like Under the Western Freeway over Sophtware, it's really starting to catch on with me.

Listening to TOOL latest record, 10 000 days. As always it reaches deep into my soul and I will listen to that album many, many times in the coming weeks, to try to grasp all the subtility that is TOOL.

Right there with you Eric, had 10,000 Days on loop for a week now. Just like I did with Ænima. Much better than Lateralus.

I'm also impressed, 10.000 days is a very nice record! Usually I'm not into music that needs such a long time building the sound structure, but this one caught me.

Bong, if you like the bravery you may check "the faint" (electro) and "the kills" (white stripes meet electro).

And I wanted to drop 2 names:

Beatsteaks - check LP "Smack Smash" (pos. rock)
Blackmail - check LP "Aerial View" (melancholic rock)

In my opinion the best german rockbands. Both sing in english. Really worth a listen!

ahh, i'll check out those two bands Julien.

i haven't bought anything new lately but i've been listening to my brother's new Wolfmother CD. it's all very 70's hard rock sounding (like Rush) but also has very similar elements with White Stripes and Queens of the Stone Age.

speaking of singers that sound like Rush's Geddy Lee, i think i'll put of The Music's debut and Welcome To The North albums next. i really should give these two CDs further listens.

Anyone else see Pearl Jam yet this tour? I just saw them last night at the Palace of Auburn Hills (Detroit). Fantastic, high-energy show with a great blend of old and new songs.

The fan club treated me well with seats in the fourth row. To top it off, I found one of Eddie Vedder's guitar picks on the floor as I was taking my seat.

I missed out on tix this round Eddy. We were aiming for Philly/Camden this coming weekend actually, but I bailed on the Fan Club after Riot Act and my mate was only able to get 2 seats for like 6 people who wanted to go. I wasn't about to try with Tickmaster either. Heard it ended up selling out in under an hour. But, I have my memories (and PJ bootleg) of a fantastic tour ender from a few summers back. What would have been the last date of the last American Tour when Riot Act was it.

Oh, and on the new music front, Grandaddy "Just Like the Fambly Cat" is an amazing send off for a great band that never got what they deserved out of the music community.

And my luck, and advance copy of Eric Bachmann's "To the Races" due out in late August. His first non-Crooked Fingers solo release (as he is Crooked Fingers whether there's a band behind him or not). CF had a good run and went 2 albums farther then they originally thought and it's no big surprise to see him step up sans-moniker for the new release. Sparse, dark and very insightful. Still very southern culture oriented as many of his writing leans to. Stripped down to a guitar, violin and ghostly backing vocals and still as melodic as any full banded CF release.

that's awesome Ed! glad you had a great time... i've stopped the Pearl Jam scene since Vitalogy, skipped No Code but did pick up Yield. is the new one a worthy purchase?

i've been pretty slow on new releases lately, but the new Grandaddy (amongst other things) are definitely on my shopping list.

Just got my hands on the new Keane album. Brilliance, as you would expect. Four tracks really great (Atlantic, Crystal Ball, Nothing In My Way & A Bad Dream) and the rest all goodies too. Not sure if it's a better album than Hopes & Fears, but it is certainly quite a different sound. Lots of killer hooks though,

I'd go into more detail, but it might make Bong's nine more days of waiting for it even more painful!

heh... nine days i can handle, much better than waiting half a year for most other Brit bands (Muse, Editors, Elbow) or even no US release at all (Starsailor, The Tears, the last Manic Street Preachers).

i'll hear Keane's new album soon enough! looks like the new Pet Shop Boys album Fundamental doesn't have a US release date (their last greatest hits double disc package PopArt never even made it here), looks like i'll have to spring for an expensive import copy.

soo... Weezer splits, again. looks like this time it's for real though.

http://www.nme.com/news/weezer/23579

after reading the article, Rivers seem pretty jaded but who know what will happen in the future. after all there was a five year span between Pinkerton and The Green Album.

honestly, after the flawless Pinkerton, it was sort of downhill for me with Weezer... The Green Album was alright, Maladroit was mediocre at best, and i didn't even bother with the last one. i think i'll listen to Pinkerton today.

They'r eup, they're down. They're more of a joke now anyway. Even when the latest hit last summer the big Rolling Stone interview said no one talks, no one gets along and it just a paycheck. River's was too controling to really have a band where everyone does their part anyway.

you don't see music the way I do

No, I must not. I think you should listen beyond what top 40 radio has to offer though and you'll find an entire world of singer/songwriters that eclipse the crap that pollutes the airwaves of the masses, even when they only manage to sell 500 albums a year that go virtually unheard of.
