Is the Text Gascan truly "rare"? It was never made available to the public
The point I was trying to make, was the evidence of distribution. Whether it was for the public, is no matter. A frame or non-stock lens made once and thrown out on ebay I guess can be called rare due to a quantity of 1, but it's not really and identifiable piece. No one in 5 years will be talking about the White Oil Drum with USA icons. Reputation amoung pairs also helps a bit.
So pairs like the Text Gascan and the Thumps I mentioned above, were distributed, thus allowing them to somehow make it to the public or collectors. A Red Zero for Judge Dred I doubt still exists, since props are often destroyed to prevent scalping. Like the Cyclops Juliet, it will never see the light of day and there's really a 0% chance of ever owning it.
But you're right, it's personal preference, and this is just my take on it all. We should all collect what interests us most, so rarity shouldn't artificially increase the desire to obtain a piece, if it's really not that interesting. Take the signature pairs that are all black. What's the point, even if they are limited.
