Finally. After what feels like an eternity of rare factory custom combos with boring colourways, Black/black sigs and mundane items, we have stuff that's rare AND cool. Nice pickups, Robert.

The resurrection of this thread has me thinking. In this time of custom cutting and now even custom creating lenses like the liquid metal lenses available on eBay. (which I still think had to be some sort of patent infringement) What constitutes a rare item? Anyone with a Dremel and some skill and creativity can make a one of a kind creation. To me for something to qualify as rare it has to be an original creation from the factory and not a home custom job.

I don't mean to slam or demean any of the amazing custom creations we've seen on this site. I wish to hell I had some of them. But for me for something to be really rare, it has to have come from Oakley that.

Thanks Mike.

wish I had known you were going to need that lanyard, I would've picked on up for you at HQ when I saw one there this summer.

Custom's aren't rare just because one exists. Given the resources, anyone can go out and recreate them. I think even factory one-off's aren't really considered rare, since there's really no way to get one if someone already has it.

Rare to me is a pair commercially produced and available through normal or limited channels, thus giving people the chance to obtain them at least on the first go around. After that when they're hopping from collector to collector or on ebay, it's truely a challenge to find them, but it is possible. The total-o customs are thus not rare to me. Things made with the purpose of trying to be collectable, end up not being so...in any field.

Take my Snow Jungle Four S. I've never seen any others, but they were never for sale, so I can't really say they were possible to purposely obtain. But then take my flame straight jacket prototype. Only 7 were handmade and sold in the Irvine O Store to test market the flame print on glasses. I have the full story from the original owner, which gives it a little more weight. Then of coure we have the Flores and Kennseth's, each issuing about a hundred pair, which at one point could be purchased for retail, despite it being a mad dash now with over inflated prices.

But of course that's just my take on it. Initial availability, background story, attractiveness; all things I think that should be taken into account.
