Anyway, you should never get lasik unless your corneas are incredibly thin ... lasik creates structural defects in your epithelium isn't worth the risk of future problems. The flap never heals. After extensive research, we decided to get PRK for my wife. Basically the same as lasik, except that the healing time is longer, but your eye heals completely and is structurally perfect. She's better than 20/20 now, and no risk of future complications :-)

But I digress.

The Livestrong version of course is going to a great cause, i'm def. getting these as my aunt is suffering from Terminal cancer. As a Rx wearer, it's nice to be able to show your support in fighting this horrible disease.

Both procedures involve doing some "damage" to the epithelial layer of the eye, Lasik does it underneath the flap PRK on the cornea surface itself. Both effectivley yield the same results and studies have shown that both pose a risk of the development of transient subepithelial haze, regression of myopia, and dry eyes. Even though these procedures are still fairly new and it will be years before any long term studies can prove which if any is the better choice. I had the procedure done in April of 2001 and have had no complications as of yet and my vision is 20/20 - 20/10, congratulations to your wife on getting the procedure done.

I tried the wingspan when I picked out my new Socket Rx. It was nice, but I thought they were too Batman-esque. That wing design does flare out somewhat too much for me. Has me wondering if they use the same earsock as the Socket though and if i can snag a red set.

I got Lasek with an E rather than Lasik with an I. It's a version of PRK. After my research I came to the same conclusion that it was slightly better. There is a lowered incidence of dry eyes as the nerves that stimulate tear production aren't cut with a flap. There is also better night vision because the area treated is larger. Bad night vision after lasik can occur because at night your pupils are larger than the area corrected.

It's really wonderful to not have to take out contacts with dirty fingers while camping and watch my friends fumble with all the sand and saltwater at the beach. I highly recommend it.

Agreed that O RX look great, and I always notice them on people, but maybe they could just be expensive reading glasses for me (in the future) or a clear lense for looks.

True ... but Lasik carries additional risks NOT associated with PRK. The flap can become dislodged later in life, causing (in a small minority of cases) irreparable damage, which can result in uncorrectable vision. We're talking single-digit percentages here, but we figured PRK was a safer choice. Our doctor felt the same way, and wonders why anyone makes the Lasik choice ... a quicker recovery time isn't worth the additional risk, in his view or in ours.

Anyway, if you got Lasik and (so far) have no problems, more power to you! My sister got it 10 years ago, and has had zero issues. Just sayin, we took the safer route, and are also super happy.
