Hi guys

I have neglected the review for a while and am hoping to return in style. (well, kind of)

I picked up a pair of FMJ frames on Ebay and they were quite badly knocked up.

The lenses were totally scratched and the unobtainium was badly damaged or missing. The FMJ coating had flaked off in several places (revealing the white/cream coloured o-matter beneath.

My thought was to completely strip them back and make a pair of semi-deconstructed oakleys. Kinda like a pre-completion prototype.

Going for the least flashy finish I managed to get myself some plain grey lenses and black unobtainium for them.

I now need to strip the entire FMJ coating off and I dont know where to start. It feels like I could probably pick it off with my finger nails but wanted to check if anyone here had a better method.

The other thing I wanted to know if there is such a thing as an "un-coloured" icon for the XX. I dont want to just go for a plain white icon as I am hoping for a completely stripped look.

SO..... long story short, FMJ stripping and plain un coloured icon for o-matter XX.

Cheers dudes

Hey William, glad to see you post, you always have something interesting to say I find.

For stripping the paint, I am no expert, perhaps hot water would help with the paint stripping. Others will surely have better or faster methods, it really depends on the current condition of the frame and how easy it is to peel the paint of.

For the Icons, what do you mean by un-coloured exactly ?

You might be able to get what you are looking for by buying another frame and swapping the Icons or just spray painting them.

hey eric, thanks for your kind words. It's good to be back. (and good to see i havent been forgotten).

Been really busy of late. New job a few months ago and our baby girl, abigail, arrived 12 days ago.

Another member of our little clan has arrived.

Thanks for the advice. Hadnt thought about hot water. The frame is literally flaking away in places. I reckon i could get it all off with my thumb nail. Just reckon i would be there for ever and wanted to see if anyone had an easier method.

Regarding the icons, i am not looking for any specific colour. I am looking for an un painted icon, whatever colour that is. Really eager to get the un-finished look.

If unpainted icons are simply unobtainable does anyone reckon an icon would hold up to any type of paint/coating removal?

Thanks guys!

A few months back I stripped an XX that had the FMJ Red coating. It's kind of a sad story because I actually liked the FMJ Red coating (I bought them on ebay for a good price), but I went to put new lenses in them and as I was taking the old lenses out, a big chunk of the red coating came off with one of the lenses. In response to your question, I removed the FMJ with my fingernails because I didn't want to damage the finish underneath. Yeah, it took awhile, but probably less than 45min-1hr. Just get your fingernails going really fast! LOL. I don't think I'm going for the deconstructed look like you are. The o-matter underneath the FMJ is black in some places and silver in others, so I think I will eventually paint the frame. I'd like to do a chrome look (similar in appearance to Oakley's "Polished Aluminum"). Anyone know what paint Rick used on his chrome MD's? Oh, wait I think he maybe paid someone else to do them. Anyway, if anyone can help me source the correct paint to do such a job, I would really appreciate it.

Hey Derron

thanks for the info. I am prepping my thumbnail for some action.

How did it come out? Did you manage to completely strip it?

I will post some pictures when I am done.

It would be good to find out which paint it was as I am a bit concerned about the frame colour when I am finished. I thought it would come out in a single uniform colour.

Time will tell.

Anyone have any infor on bare icons for the XX?

as well were mine, but they are home with another deserving member. They were produced and Lil Jon wore them in the Chappelle Show on one episode when they were going back and forth. Very uncommon
