I'm in Air Force ROTC, and this semester we all have to give a briefing advocating something, and it has to be military related. I want to support the position "The military should supply all active duty members with oakley eyewear"

I know I can back it up, and I have some sources of my own, but could you all post links/pictures/information that would support my position? With your help no one will be able to deny it!

Your sunburn photo should be part of it. Otherwise grab some of the impact testing photos.

John, you should also point out that Oakley's SI line was specifically designed for military use with matte black frames, non-reflective lenses, and subdued icons.

From what I've seen on eBay, a good portion of the model lineup is available in SI trim (a wire, e Wire 2.1, Sq Wire, Half Wire, Half Jacket, M-Frame, Monster Dog, Minute, Straight Jacket, Fives 2.0, Twenty, and Fat Cat)

turns out this presentation isn't until december 7, so between now and then i should be able to gather enough backup information to blow them away

is there still information floating around about that project to make lenses that protected from laser weapons?

There was never information on it really. That fact then led to the belief that the lens would protect from lasers, which it wouldn't. It simply allowed you to see laser sites better given certain aiming devices.

dann's right on, lack of any sort of technical data on that lens led to all sorts of speculation as to its actual function. from what I've gathered from various sources outside of the eyewear circle (gun shops, etc) the laser lens helps you see laser sights more easily. you know, like in an action movie where guys are waving around a machine gun and you can track the laser sight from the barrel all the way to the target. in real life, all you get is a dot, like a laser pointer. i guess the filter on the lens lets you see the whole beam, rather the just the end, where it scatters.

some other points:
read the thread on here about the protective qualities of the tactical lenses...
ultraviolet protection is essential in bright environments (like the deserts of the middle east)
MADE IN USA!
figure: equip over 250,000 soldiers with new Oakley eyewear for the same price as 1 LockMart JSF

do you remember that thing in the newspapers about soldiers boot soles melting in the desert.
I bet the oakley SI boots dont melt.

I can scan an email you the 8" x 10" cards about the Shotgun Proof M lens and the High Definition Test Pattern. You can see them here:

the presentation was today, and it went really well. i put together some nice slides with much of the information and sources you guys provided (thanks) and everyone was riveted

more than one person said they were planning on getting some oakleys after my talk, and the instructor said he suspected i was in the sunglasses selling business

in short, i want a commission from oakley! haha

yup, i did. no one asked to try them on, which is fine because i would have had to break their wrists.

the pics you sent me were killer, i got some dropped jaws on the shotgunned lens slide

Too bad you didn't have an actual shotgun lens. O Dealers used to have a lens that was shot in the display case. My SGH had one and some of the shot was embedded in the lens.
