yeah, around the same time i was using a Samsung Yepp 32MB player with another 32 Smartmedia card. then i got a Creative Nomad MG 64MB with a 128MB Smartmedia card. then after that i got a Creative Nomad Jukebox 6GB (the one that looks like a really thick Discman). then it was the first generation 5GB iPod, then it's my current 2nd gen 10GB iPod.

yeah, i went through many mp3 players.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the 16Mb add-on card. I wonder what lame songs I still have sitting on that player.

Myself, I love Apple. Apple pie, apple crumble, apple crisp, sliced apples with peanut butter, caramel apples, Fiona Apple, apple scented candles, thick applesauce, those spiced apple slices that come with pork and ribs...

You may need a little beefier belt clip to carry that beast around. The rubber bands are a nice touch

OK, I need some opinions.

I still don't have an MP3 player and I've decided to take the plunge on either the 4gig ipod nano or the 30gig ipod with video. I love the size of the nano but I keep hearing I won't be satisfied in the long run with only 4gig worth of room/storage.

I've also been told to consider what I'm going to use it for. The nano would be more appropriate for activites, MTB, working out, etc. The 30 gig ipod is more for the "collection" and so forth.

I see myself using it more for everyday normal use, but I still love the small size of the nano. Hence my dilemma.

Opinons, thoughts?

Thanks eveyrone!

Well Dan, how many song do you really want with you at all times. I have over 1000 on my 4gb Nano and I still have a bit of room to spare. When I listen to it, I set it on Shuffle across all the songs and let it go on that cycle all week long until the next charging. It's great. I'm always hearing something different and never get through them all.

I did (still do) have a 20gb player and the 3000+ songs was just way too many. It is great to carry an entire collection, but I always listend to the smae artists over and over. Now, this brand player didn't have a shuffle feature but if it did I would have skipped a lot of the songs it shuffled just because I honestly didn't listen to everything on the player.

That was my deciding factor for going down in size. I almost bought a Mini just before Nano came out. I only wanted my favorite albums from my fav artists and a few that I wanted to listen to but never seemed to get to ont eh larger. Nano was perfect. Shuffling across the entire player is a fantastic feature, esp when you have a smaller amount of music.

Phil I'm kind of thinking I was gonna do what you are doing. Because I seem to listen to my favorites the most or I at least have favorites at the time. So I thought 4gig/1000 tunes would be enough.

I will admit that I don't think that for another $50 or so getting 26gig more would be bad though. The value is better with the 30gig ipod with video then with the nano. I guess that is part of the issue also.

Nano = cool factor
30 gig = better value

I can sometimes be a sucker for "cool factor" and to me the nano has more of that. But since I'm not using it for active stuff, the size of the player, one would think shouldn't be an issue. But to me it is one of the major selling points.

I def see te value issue. I can even ask myself what would I have done if I was buying Nano now with the 30gb Video just released and I too may have gone for the 30gb. I wa slooking at 4gb Mini and it was the same difference going up to the 6gb. In the end though you have to ask what you really want. Video, not yet. Another large player, no. Small, ultra concealable and a lighter assortment of tunes? Yes.

Phil you make some very good points and are looking at it very logically. My first instinct was to go with the nano. I've looked at ipod minis, creative micro zens and so forth in the past. The fact that I could carry around a nice amount of tunes in something so small was one of the biggest attractions for me.

I think I might be leaning back to the nano.

Thanks for the input Phil!!

i think it all depends on your listening habit. with my old 10GB 2nd gen iPod, i love the fact that i can browse through a good number of albums, ready at my disposal. unlike Phil though, i'm a strict album listener and very rarely do i listen to shuffle mode or specific particular songs unless it's a mixed CD/compilation i made for myself or someone made me. i tend not to go to another album until i finish listening to the first one. that might not fit the requirements of a Nano, but certainly with a full sized iPod.

another issue is that storing a larger music collection on the iPod means that you're able to clear hard drive space (if that's a concern). i have a good number of albums on the iPod that's not on the comp's HD, but of couse i have the original CD's that were ripped from it, so i'm not too concerned about lost mp3's.

also, it might also depend on how you're going to be using it. i use my full sized iPod on my daily commute, and i always carry a messenger bag with me, so the small form factor of the Nano really isn't an issue. the full sized iPod is small enough to tote around with my bag.

although on my weekend romps to the city, i don't want to be bogged down with bags and full sized iPods, so i have my 1GB Shuffle for those days. just load a few albums and i'm good to go. i'm sure the Nano would work extremely well in this respect.

hope this post did more good than harm, LOL.

BTW, my 10 gigger has been full for a long time now. i feel it's quite annoying having to choose which albums to delete when i need to add more music. oh well... food for thought.
