OakleyMonster, i had a friend who absolutley loves Phish (and has enough live recordings to fill up a room), so i really did give them a try... i just can't get into it (like pretty much every other jam band as well). i bought "Billy Breathes," which is supposedly their most commercial release, "A Live One" because live shows are really their thing, and "Farmhouse" when it first came out. after a few honest spins, they sit in the back of my CD collection and have not been touched for quite a while.

i tried out Morphine too, "Cure For Pain" was pretty much used for background study music in my college freshman year. i liked the sparse, bluesy rock (no guitars) but didn't really leave an impression. i have no idea where that CD went.

heh... Alexis, i absolutely despise The Spice Girls! LOL. like Phil i'm not a radio friendly Top 40 person, i usually get music tips from forums and magazines, mainly Q and NME.

as for mindless pop music, i do admit to listening to Kylie Minogue every once in a while. no matter how you cut it, "Fever" was and still is a great dance/pop album. oh, and i listen to Robbie Williams every once in a while, i mean the guy who sings the best song in the UK for the past 25 years ("Angels") can't be all that bad, right? :P

just read in Q magazine that Robbie Williams was entertaining the idea of a Take That reunion... said that he felt they didn't have a proper "farewell" for the fans. getting your hopes up, Alexis? :P time for Robbie to upstage Gary Barlow again...

also, a possible a Spice Girls reunion tour for 2006 is in the works. don't get too excited Alexis!

so what's your music guilty pleasure? this morning i was looking through my collection, came across a CD and said to myself, "hmm... havn't heard this in a while." so i took it to work with me and found myself thoroughly enjoy listening to it. it was ABBA GOLD! and yes... i bought it willingly!

okay... to gain back some indie cred, i'm also listening to some other stuff i have not touched in ages, namely old school Public Image Ltd., especially "Metal Box/Second Edition" and "Flowers of Romance." honestly the best work John Lydon (Johnny Rotten) has ever done. disturbing, experimental, and mesmerizing. am i glad Sex Pistols self disintegrated? hell yeah.

also this week, i finally bought Coldplay's "X and Y" and Gorillaz' "Demon Days." the new Coldplay is better than "A Rush of Blood to the Head" IMO, and Gorillaz is quite good too. but still not as good as my favourite album of 2005 so far, The Tears' debut "Here Come the Tears."

I bought Coldplay X & Y last weekend, as well James Kochalka Superstar. I'll get back to that one. I gave Coldplay a once through and wasn't too impressed upon first listen and I can't really say it is or isn't better than A Rush of Blood... There were only a few tracks that jumped out at me and none that I can really recall now. I did like A Rush though and a grand amount of Parachutes so after a few ore listens I'll see.

As for James Kochalka Superstar, oh so good. He's an indie comic artist with a band on the side. Of course he's serious about his music but the music is far from serious singing about Pizza Rockets, Monkeys fighting Robots and, well, peoples private parts.

Now next week I can bask in the glory that is Frank Black with the release of his first solo album (Catholics records don't count) since 1994/5s Cult of Ray. Although I've had the advance of this release since October I'm still excited for the official release and new b-sides that tag along with it.

i like X&Y much better than Rush of Blood... it's a lot more cohesive and solid as an album. to me A Rush of Blood had great moments, but the other half was quite boring. X&Y is much more atmospheric... love the organ sound. and i also love the fact that the main guitar riff is based on Kraftwerk's "Computer Love." but still, Parachutes is still by far their best album.

i never got into post Pixies stuff... i do remember all my indie friends bought Teenager of the Year when it came out.

You should at least hear Frank Blacks self titled solo debut and Teenager. They're still very new wave and not too far removed from the Pixies like his Catholics and later solo work.

PHIL! check this out!

http://www.nme.com/news/113023.htm

Reformed alt-rock legends PIXIES are planning to record their first album in 14 years.

The band¡¯s frontman Black Francis has confirmed the band, who got back together last year to huge acclaim, are preparing to make their first studio album since 1991¡¯s ¡¯Trompe Le Monde¡¯.

He told The Sun: ¡°It's all hugs and kisses, I'm pleased to report.

"We have been discussing recording a new album lately. As happy as we are with the success of the reunion tour, we really want to make a record for the right reasons, whether it is successful commercially or not."

He added: "We would be satisfied if it played like our other records, never chart-topping but always in print."

GIGANTIC!

Very cool. That notion has been bouncing around as a rumor since the start of the reunion topur last year but they kept debying it. I checked with fb.net and it seems like it's really gonna happen now. Still alot of skeptics over there though [most don't look to favorably on NME] but it seems bbc radio is confirming it as well.

Am I the only one who listens to jazz? Or Phish? Or Bela' Fleck, or Mophine? I feel so alone!
Nope, I'm also a jazz fan :) Been listening to a lot of Bill Evans lately, with a little Patricia Barber in the mix. I'm also a UK band fan, just got the new Elbow album (Leaders of the Free World). Kinda disappointed so far..

I got the latest Fear Factory and KMFDM releases.

FF I was a bit disappointed with. Wasn't as hard edged as I hoped they were moving back towards. KMFDM however I wasn't paying much attention too, but released a solid album.

I went to a Weezer/Foo Fighters concert last night & it was awesome! Concert was 3 1/2 hours away though so I didn't get back until 4:30am (I'm a little sleepy now) a band called Kaiser Chiefs opened. Sounded pretty good but it was so loud that I couldn't understand any lyrics. Any of you UK guys know much about them?
