Hey Guys,

I am seeking the Oakley Mars Leather version to use as my - go to the lake, go fishing, off-roading/outdoor - get wet/abuse glasses. I know most of you have them, but I was wondering if anyone had worn the crap out of them, abused them, and how they hold up.

Thanks!

How cool to have such a place to ask such a question!!!!

Hi Nik,

I dont have the leather mars myself but from what I have heard the leather doesnt stand up to much without wearing and becoming rather grimey looking. Wet weather, sweat etc cause the leather to become quite tarnished and as such it may only be suitable for occasional/non exertive wear or as a display piece.

I reckon the fives would be a better choice (depending on your definition of wear and tear). If you want something a bit out of the ordinary then maybe the splice but if it is x-metal you want then my recomendation would be (as always) the juliet. Of course if you want a special looking mars then you could go for the crater or the ruby iridium edition which I believe is still available from some online vendors.

Hope this helps.

Hwy thanks man!

Yeah - actually have both the Juliet and Splice...kinda looking for something way different for when I "cut loose" in public but unsure how well the other Mars frames will fit my big head and not really interested in the "over the tops's" look.

Thanks though!

My Mars is my most abused pair. The leather is very dark brown now instead of tan, and the lenses have a purple mirror now instead of a light brown. But as glasses, they stay put and still are great to wear and look through.

Check out mine to the left and my brother's to the right:

Hey Nik, I also have a big head, and believe me, a pair of mars looks like swimming goggle on me !

I would recommend the Plate 24k/Platinum, I always get looks with those.

Who would want to abuse their Oakly :'(

Wouldn't purposely abuse them, but sometimes you need a pair that can withstand some heavy use. Since mine weren't in the best condition anyway, I've turned those into my knockaround pair, and spare the rest.

Ebay usually has Buy-it-now's for $100-120 or so. People trying to get a quick profit from the $50 pairs at the sidewalk sale.

I live in Australia Nik so after postage I think it wouldn't be worth it, besides, I'm more about the sunglasses than anything else.

I was half joking about the trade anyway. While I would trade my leather Mars for Romeo or XX, I wouldn't expect anyone to do so.

thanks Dann, yeah it was a pretty good find.

Nik, it takes patience to get a deal as low as $100. sometimes Mars come out all over ebay and sometimes there are only a few pairs on auction. i'm sure i saw a leather gold mars for $120 a few days ago..

i would offer you trade for your juliet but it's impossible since i live in Indonesia. but anyways, good luck on finding a pair on ebay! i'm sure you'll find one soon. :)

on a side note, i wanted to create a new thread for this but i'm going off the internet soon, it seems that there are less juliet ruby on ebay nowadays.., i remember there were lots of them being offered back a few months ago(Dec/Jan), i wonder if ppl has decided to keep em instead of offering them on ebay..?

Yeah, I think you're right about people deciding to hold onto their RJs instead of selling them. Since production ended on the RJs, the sellers are not getting them anymore (and thus not putting them on eBay). Now the consumers are holding them, and they're much less likely to put it on eBay then sellers/reseller. I think that trend will continue as time goes by.

Remember, there used to be 0.3s available as well.
