I was looking into cutting an iridium polarized lens for my polarized Frogskins. I was trying to get the original lens out of it and it was not budging. It appears to be sitting a little different than the other frogskins. Before i go all out and brake the frame i was just wondering if anyone was able to get a polarized lens out of one of the polarized frogskins before?

thanks man. I thought the red clear gradient sounded odd, but in that Cinder frame, man they are sick! I should have added more light to the pic so you could see the frame pop..

Can anyone explain this to me? from the lens cutting faq:

"Next, use your XACTO knife to trim around your lines. Outside, not inside, and front only."

what am I trimming? The tape? Or am I actually cutting into the lens material with the razor knife?

TIA.

Hi guys, I finally got around to trying my hand at cutting some lenses! Am I the only one that thinks the smell of cutting plutonite is nice? Any way, this is a custom that I have been wanting to do for a long time. I got these Monster Doggle's and the Grey lenses were completely shot and I don't like the way these look with Grey anyway. I found out that eyepatch lenses would work well and got a pair of Ruby's. Here's some pics of the progress...

What we're working with

The masked and traced lens

After cutting and some sanding, ready to go in!

Some shots of the finished product, sorry about the crappy pics. I will paint the icons a metallic red when I can get some paint...

Much thanks to Dr. Chop for the cutting tutorial and all ya'll for the inspiration to try this myself! Turned out pretty good, especially for a first attempt.

That looks great!

I followed the good Doctor's tutorial a couple of times and I have failed miserably each time. Ah well, some folks got it and some folks don't (me).

Jason, how did you cut the lens after the initial tracing?

I think this is what may be throwing me off (check out the post right above yours).

Dave at the very bottom of this thread is a link to his instructions. I just seen it now myself.

you have to use the cut off wheel to make the initial cut after tracing...don't crank up the speed or you will have problems, BIG TIME!! melting lenses, broken wheels flying in your face, and worse, lens damage!! I can almost do a whole set with just that now...pretty fun...And yeah, I love the smell of burning plutonite, just don't like it all over my face LOL...

Just one question Jason...What the hell is that gargatuan knife used for? LOL

Wha...???? YIkes. Using those cut off wheels just scares me. I've had a bunch let go on me at high speed. They suck when they hit you in the face.

I'll have to find another cheap lens to try. 1 more time. if the 3rd time isn't the charm, it's going to be 3 strkes and you're out.

If you're worried about them breaking get one of the diamond tip wheels. I used to use them to cut SPS corals. You should be able to use them on the lens with no issues.

I've never had a problem with the fiberglass cutting wheels blowing up. For this I also followed Josh's instructions and kept the speed down.

The knife I just used to trim off the little flaps of tape left on the edges after cutting or sanding. Gave me a nice clean edge so I could test fit without the tape interfering.

I'm pretty good with a cut off wheel too, I almost did these all the way with just that. I only used the sanding drum to clean up a few spots and do the bevel. I'm stoked to do another pair now, it's kind of addictive!

so this has been dead for a while, so what better way to resurrect than with a coveted Romeo 1 and a Positive + Red Polarized custom!! Marvel in the beauty of what Oakley should have done. Forget Ruby, it's played out, bring on +Red Polar!!

Don, you frag corals?? I am getting ready to build a reef again!! I had a wicked 50gal tall custom built tank some years back that was PACKED!! Stonies baby, stonies! I had so many corals in that tank. I miss that, but luckily Aimee is big into wanting a reef and S/W fish only, so we are going to setup 2-3 tanks. I may do up a 28gal Nano with MH/Actinic or LED lighting and make it my SPS tank. I gotta look into the filtration and how I can build a fuge and plumb it so I can get a good proper filtration system going...I used to frag the hell outta sps, zoanthids, and xenia...

That's pretty impressive, Josh !
I admit that I prefer stock Romeo's, but that's a nice achievement here.
And icing on the cake, you kept the "Polarized" etching !

WOW. awesome. But ruby's played out???? Come on!!!

Speaking of fish tanks, I used to do a lot of freshwater stuff (bred my own Piranhas). Would love to try my hand at a salty tank.W
e should have an O-Fish tank thread. I'd love to have one in my condo, but worried that with me travelling, if a leak developed, the lady below me would get flooded, again (long story- I've flooded her twice in a year).

:)

ruby is played, way out LOL...I like it, don't get me wrong, but it isn't all that lol...traveling and salty may not be a great choice...need a lil more care and attention...If you have good equip it will handle itself and won't be much worse for care than fresh, but temp is a big factor...Get check valves on both lines and that will eliminate back siphon issues, and cracks, well, get a good tank LOL...I had my last one custom made. It was a 50gal tall glass with internal overflow box and drilled for return, but the glass was twice the normal thickness from a store bought tank! Just in case lol....weighed 100lbs empty!

Would some body be willing to custom cut me some lenses for my hijinx? I have a radar Xl G26 lens that i think would look amazing in my hijinx, Im just afraid to do it. Ill pay or trade for some one to do it for me.
