It was scrapped. Price point would have been too high.

Does anyone know what the concept was.

Did the expense come from exotic materials, production methods, electronic components????

Go in the catalogue and read the reviews, someone explains it there...

Hey guys, about the jigsaw.

Can someone just clarify what it was. I know we cant expect it to be released but I just need my curiosity to be satisfied. You dont have to say much, just pick a number from the options below:

1> a concept model which was cut
2> an april fools joke
3> someones imagination run riot

If it was number 1 then was it really cut due to any of the reasons in my last ost in this thread? If so which one?

reason #1 I have been told. Retail would have been around $800-900, so I think that price range would keep it from ever really being marketable.

that price will seem like a drop in the bucket when the Elite series hits at $1200-4000 per pair! It would have been a cool concept for sure!

$1200 - $4000 for a pair of Oakleys is just ridiculous. I don't care what they're made out of. I don't care if God Himself descended from the heavens & created them. They're simply not worth it. Period. I wouldn't consider buying a pair even if the financial resources were available.

It is a new series that will be coming out sometime 2008. I don't have a ton of details but enough to totally understand the concept. Extremly Limited with prices from 1200-4000 from what I have gathered. They totally won't be for everyone just like all any other pair of Oakleys. I have to say that I see where they are coming from on this series when you look at the overall sunglass market. Check out some Chrome Hearts eyewear when you get a chance. The thoughts are endless with what they can do to a pair of glasses, xmetals, actual carbon fiber etc.....totally like nothing that we have ever seen. You can't say that it is not worth it with out seeing the product. Is a Porsche Cayanne S or BMW X5 4.0 worth 60-70k when a SS Trailblazer will blow its doors completly off for 35k?? I still see a lot of Porsche and BMW SUVS on the road so somebody is buying them. The name says it all in ELITE.

I agree, maybe those prices will change once the final products roll out. Kinda interesting though.

Yeah, well you know who's going to end up with them? Very few - if any - of us here (the true Oakley collectors) on the OR. People who are EXTREMELY affluent will get them - people who could really care less about Oakley & simply want a $4,000 pair of shades to flaunt & brag about - along with every OTHER brand of sunglass (other than Oakley) that they've owned for years. Others like myself who have been a die-hard fan for over a decade and a half, have spent thousands of dollars across the board on ALL Oakley products, and who truly love & admire the company will be left out - simply because we're not filthy rich. I don't think that's cool. Not cool at all. In short, a perfect way for Oakley to completely alienate their biggest and longest-standing supporters.

Cheers Dann. Thanks for the info. You dont happen to know what made the price so high do you? Materials, R&D, electrics? I suppose that was really what I wanted to know.

As for the elite series, sounds cool. With that kind of price point they can take things to the extreme if they want to.

I am sure that some of the negative comments could have been applied to the x-metals almost a decade ago. How things change. I know that $4k is extreme but imagine what they could do.

Dont get me wrong, if the price is justified by diamonds and platinum then it probably wouldnt interest me. If however, they start telling the mad scientists to adjust their budget accordingly then things could get very interesting.

I'd be content for some decent colorways in the regular lineup of glasses. The SJ2 and M2.0 have done nicely. Hope to see more of that in the future. They'd make a lot more off a few thousand people than a few thousand of a small amount of people.

Man, I wish the whole jigsaw thing would have worked! As for the elite stuff, it will more than likely be out of the budget of a lot of us here on the review(me included!) I just think that is is cool that they are trying some new paths out! I am sure this will probably end up like the "New" xmetal that we were gonna see this year, so lets get ready for a 2010 release.lol

Hah, that I can deal with. Well my plan was to collect one representative pair of every Oakley, and I've gotten most of the trickier pairs, but this would throw a huge monkey wrench into the mix.

Eh, perhaps I'm just being a bit shelfish... I agree, Brent, it would be very cool to see something completely new & unprecedented. It's just that after so many years of collecting & after being such a huge afficionado, it pains me to think they're going to leave most of us out on their greatest products. True, the price of X-Metals are very high, but still most people can afford them one way or another (credit if nothing else). I just think that most who will end up owning such glasses will not be true Oakley fans, anyway, but rather someone who cares about nothing more than the $$$$.

Case in point, the Copper Romeo T_O had on ebay went to some guy with more money than brains and just ended up 'wearing them'. Something of that caliber should end up in Rick's collection, not being abused on a daily basis. (not to reopen the wearers vs collectors debate again)

I think the solution should be to price them like normal, but ask each buyer how many generations ruby came in. If they answer with a number, they don't get one.

ohhhhhh Dann, you just had to bring up that copper Romeo! lol! When I saw that piece, I was in heaven! I would have to say that is my most coveted pair that I will never get a chance to see....let alone own! That was a thing of beauty but I sure as hell didn't have the $1200 to spend on it. Oh well, lets all think happy thoughts!!!

People will spend the money though, that is the hard part...Many have spent thousands chasing the DF series, C100, and others. If it strikes a nerve, it will sell.

I would first question it at that price due to the fact it will be Lux O. But if it's that damn cool - I would venture to say we are a focused and creative bunch - If anyone can find a way to get a better price - it will be us.

And I agree - look at what we've (collectively) spent on the damn Art stuff... $800 dollar GC's? Really?
