Well they can't stop us taking Photos of our own product can they! Our Photos are our Intellectual property and they can't touch that. But we have to respect the fact that images taken from the Oakley website belong to Oakley and they own the rights to them. the sad thing is, and what they seem to be missing is all we are doing is promoting thier product.

Com'n Oakley give us a break it's not like it's on the front cover of The LA times. ( It wasn't was it )

I think the editors of this site now Know the limits to which they can go.

To Dann : even without the Photos mate, I'll still be hanging around. Hell the Gallerys going to get larger.

What is the crap that we can't list Oakley's pictures of their products? Like those guys have never heard of word of mouth marketing or something.

Who called you and why did she call you Dann? I missed the details.

It's a sad day but as Mike said, we've all got pretty big collections and I would imagine by photographing all our own stuff we could cover most of Oakleys back catalogue!! Still a real shame though :(

Yeah, really sucks. Pained me to throw away 6 months of research in about an hour. But photo's are always welcome. Maybe we can rebuild a good chunk, so please send in the photos. If you already have them in a collection/gallery, just give me permission to use those in the DB.

You can't get in touch with Ryan at Oakley and ask for him to help clear this up. Or someone at Oakley? This lady that contacted you works for an agency outside of Oakley and may not understand what we are trying to do. Perhaps if we can get permission from someone inside... Then we can keep it all up. Man, it's a downer.

Wow Dann - I'm sorry to hear about the pics. I'll get my hands on a digital camera and get snaps of as much what I own myself if that's legit; I'm sure others will help out too, as some have already said.

Aagh - I just realized that means the artwork section is gone. All those splash pages and product shots from way back - arrrgh. I still have lots but not all on my PC (BTW - do you know how big would a .zip of all the site images be?)

She spoke with the Oakley attorney, and that was his call. So yeah, it's a third party deal, but they still have authority. Moreso over the intellectual property, than just images being taken off the website.

I say we take this as high as it will go, im sure if Jim knew about this website he would love the fact that this site has been setup by oakley fans for oakley fans and let us have the pictures.
we arent doing anything wrong,
they cant treat oakley fans like this. There must be someone we can talk to.

It's a great service as far as I can tell. We're spreading the word about Oakley. Saying, these are really cool glasses but I can't show them to you, isn't the best strategy.

Don't worry yet. Dann had received another email from the agency that contacted him about the images and he may still be allowed to use older/published images. Just not unreleased product as we had with the Romeo II.

Maybe some of you want to check out the discussion going on in "Site Suggestions"

http://dcj.amaltd.com/oakley/forum_detail.asp?ID=582

There is some talk from members on other ways to work the site and keep the images. A tiered membership. Nothing final at all. Just suggestions.

As far as letting Jim know, don't worry. A few us (the mods) had a thought as to how he may get wind of it. We'll see what happens.

And have a happy Thanksgiving all!

Didn't post this earlier as I want to double check that it was ok to mention but when I spoke to the guy from Oakley in Virgin Megastore, he mentioned that the Romeo II had been put back to the 1st qtr of 2005 and more interestingly that they had gone back to the drawing board for some design tweaking on certain parts (the nosebridge...?) as they weren't quite satisfied. Straightup. So maybe that picture won't quite resemble the final product!! And Happy Thanksgiving to all you guys in the states!!

Monster dog - here's what you can do - considering most of us are High return customers for Oakley - tell them to respect us and not sic the dogs on us - this is the same problem everyplace - once a company gets big enough it thinks it can spit on the people that helped it grow in the first place - disgusting behavior on the part of Oakley. Dann has worked very hard on this site and it is a great place to meet other Oakley fans, view model pics and info. The site also serves to highlight customer preferences towards Oakley models and indicates future trends. Whoever at Oakley decided to act again this website - for no visible reason - I hope they understand that pissing off your best customers is not the best way to retain them or to increase your sales. Please tell them Tre and a FEW of his friends said so.

P.S. on a secondary note - tell them to reduce the Romeo II prices also.

I for one, don't blame 'Oakley'. What most likely happened was: Oakley hires a third party group to protect their intellectual property. They go out and do their job and most likely don't have the same sense of company pride as most would. They find a site that at face value seems to be breaking the rules, and then talk to the official lawyer. The lawyer knows even less about the situation and is told 'There's a website using official Oakley images'. With that said, it seems plain as day to take action and request the removal of the pictures.

Behind the scenes of course, Oakley employees have been seeing this site since almost the beginning and no one has said anything. I've gotten confirmation from the head of e-commerce saying it's fine, and from a reliable source, I know Jim has seen the site, and if there was a problem, it would have been then.
