I recently acquired a pair of Plates and was reminded that before they were officially released, oakley.com had a nice teaser pic for a couple months. Furthermore, I remember that the pair in the early pictures had silver plates (not dark silver) over black O-Matter. I was somewhat disappointed when the production versions came out with clear O-Matter painted on the inside, as the silver/black contrast made the plates stand out so much more.

Does anyone still have those old pictures saved somewhere?

That old school web site finder is sweet. How awesome is it to look back at the oakely site from the late ninties, wishing you could order some ruby mars, and ruby juliets, get some shoe twos right from the factory. I really need to finsih my plans for my time machine. . .

only bad thing about the plates (and i'm really nitpicking here) is that there's no unobtanium so they might slip. but other than that, they're great. i wear 'em almost every day. one of my best oakley purchase ever.

That's Dann. The red is the plastic substrate under the metal "shell" of the icon.

Was a defect, but I bought them on impulse since they were going to be sent back.

Here's some of the artwork from not too long ago. Not sure why them went through the effort to redesign the Plate part of the website and then discontinue it.

There were some pictures of the Platinum coating process, but I can't seem to find them.

I love that blueprint and CAD drawing. That's the sort of stuff I do in school, just not that complex yet. Next term I'll be making stuff like that, then I'll be doing it for a living.
