I'll check out Miyabi in more detail the next chance I get. There is no mistaking their level of detail. - Oak

Shun are a good buy and will last long and keep a good edge. But as before just don't have the edge of the Miyabi 5000MCB's.

Miyabi 5000MCB uses SG 2 steel in the core. The Shun Hiro, Fuji, Kaji Fusion, Taiyo and Ken Onion Elite are some of the Shun series with that same steel. So, for the edge the brand is not as important as the material. :-)

that is a butterfly knife right?
sadly banned in the UK don't know why they are more dangerous than a Rambo knife or kitchen knife.

It was odd to find it locally. I saw it when getting some Oakley watch batteries replaced. They had out-the-front automatic knives too, which are very much not legal here, so it was weird being able to walk in and buy them. (Course I shouldn't talk too loud since that's the argument that always leads to these restrictive laws)

Everything here is state by state though, so there's no country-level knife law. I'm pretty sure I can't carry the folder that I do, but I do anyway. I'd probably leave the balisong at home despite looking over the state guidelines and not seeing it mentioned explicitly.

The most common issues for restrictions are:
-Opening it with one hand. This would include automatics, but spring assisted ones that need a start but then open the rest of the way. Usually the distinction between these two classes will separate the illegal automatics from the rest, but in NYC a boy scout had a pocket knife in his pocket when on a trip, and after being caught with it, they spent five minutes trying to open it without using a second hand. Once they did, they declared it a one-handed knife and it became a weapon. My CRKT folder has a tab on the front where I can use my index finder to flick it open, so even without springs, I can get it open fast. Swiss army knives are really the only 100% safe option unless you're on a plane or government building. Also since balisongs primarily are one-handed, they would count.

-Double sided blades. This would usually just be a bad idea for balisongs anyway since you rely on one safe side to perform most of the openings.

-4" blade length. This is usually what the state puts more emphasis on. And they do make 'legal' variants where the blade is 3.9" and you can have a balisong even in California since it's technically no longer a knife but just a small tool.

Like most weapon laws, they get caught up in movies and things that look scary. Switchblades and butterfly/balisongs have a lot of flare and remind you of 80's era gang members when in truth it's turned more into a hobby/sport at this point than any active harm.

No, the tachyon went out of stock before I had enough. This store has a benchmade #62 for $355. Is that worth it, or should I hunt around. They also have the mini version of the 51 with the street legal blade for $350, which is odd being $100 more than the regular 51.

Go to BladeHQ.com. They are always 15% off of retail. the prices you quoted seem a bit high. They also have the Tachyon III in stock.
