After some discussion about the macro lenses, and how they tended to gather dust, I decided to bring mine out. Then I remembered why I used to use it so much.

It's not a fast lens by any means, and certainly the narrowest aperture of any of my kit, but the length compresses the background and compensates. Since it's so sharp, you don't have to stop it down, which helps.

ahhh yes using the step forward or step back zoom method..... but yes i have to agree Dann as with my 105m macro it does gather dust, but they do pull some killer results as you have shown above. Might be my turn on the weekend.

When macro doesn't have to be macro.

It is often said a Macro is also a killer portrait lens.

Id have to agree. Sometimes the ultra shallow dof of the 85mm isn't what i want.

Nice shots Dann,

Just got a 5dii and been amazed at the improvement over my 40d, so much so I may upgrade to the Mk3 early.

Its making me rethink some of my former macro intolerance as i was always interested in length and sports before, but the full frame really brings the best outta some of my lenses. Might get a 180 next, just picked up an old 300L F4 as a tester to see if a 400 is worth it.

Very impressive piece of glass for the money too.

Nice. Those are the exact cameras I have. I have the 300mm f/2.8L IS, which is a lot of fun.
