I own the first production OTT ever made, the one that was given to Scotty Cannon. He used the living shit out of it and the below picture is the result. Basically, underneath the FMJ coating is a black coating layer. And underneath that is apparently a matte clear frame.

My question is has anyone ever cleared an OTT to create a matte clear frame? I'm wanting to try it if I ever find a beat up pair, but I'm curious if the matte clear base is inherent only to the first gen frames, or is it widespread through all generations?

That's interesting, I think I have a fire gen silver/fire and it has started pealing a little and under mine is a chrome finish! I'm very tempted to start pealing all off!

A chrome OTT would be fantastic. Keep us updated if you go on and remove the FMJ layer.

I have a pair that the clear, fmj, and part of the black underneath has worn thru and it is NOT clear under it. It's the newer style with the pads tho.

I guess we can talk about this auction now that it’s been pulled (and likely sold):

http://www.ebay.com/itm/OAKLEY-OVER-THE-TOP-SLA-PROTOTYPE-/121621948315?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c513ba79b&nma=true&si=etFpO5jix9Qvtl9YGSfD%252BABG4t0%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557#ht_63wt_1153

It’s not an SLA resin prototype as the auction suggests, but rather it’s a version of a regular OTT before it has various layers of coating put over it. It looks super cool in its matte clear form. I’ve previously tried to clear an OTT, but I couldn’t figure out how to clear the black layer without damaging the matte clear layer underneath it. Ah well, one day I’ll figure it out…probably involves boiling and some kinda harsh soap.

I saw that and wondered what the real story behind it was.

I didn't notice that it was pulled, I thought it ended without the reserve met.

Maybe. He just pulled it last minute. I think he saw it wasn't gonna reach reserve. Perhaps he pulled a deal offline.

it's no surprise the fmj is chrome underneath. That's because it is chromed first, then a matte topcoat creates the "fmj" appearance. Any fmj is actually that, chrome. I have made fmj gold, silver and bronze OTT for Del (feargear).. the black can be removed and if there is a matte clear frame wrapped in all the other stuff (which until seeing this, I was completely unaware of since 100% of frames I've worked on are Black throughout) I can make it polished clear, blends, colored, you name it.

Brian, let me know if the coating degrades further and what's underneath it (if there is more than matte black). I've seen the final base colours of matte clear, matte black and polished black. I'm trying to connect what colourways these base colours appear under, and also which generations they appear in.
