The lens is just black iridium. I used a little trickery to make it red. I'm hoping to get custom lenses made, with red plastic and a backside mirror. I believe that's how the movie lenses were done.

Thanks, Oak! Surprisingly, they don't hinder visibility as much as I thought they would. The vertical member is the most noticeable one, but it isn't that bad.

Sorry for the possible spoiler in the thread title. I saw Days of Future Past and was totally taken by the Cyclops Radarlock shades. I decided to work on some replicas for myself. Just a warning - this is a totally personal project, and I am NOT selling anything that I make, so please do not ask. I won't respond to those requests.

Anyway, here's my first step in the process. A Radarlock frame, Edge-shaped lens. I know the Cyclops lenses were even further shaved down, making them a little shorter near the nosebombs. But I have a larger face than James Marsden, so I can't reasonably wear such small lenses.

Next, I designed and printed some custom white decals, based on the images from Oakley. I think they might still need a little work, but they're close. I pasted them on some custom Edge lenses. I still need to work on the lens color, and the lower "mandible" parts, but I'm getting closer to the goal. Thanks for looking!!

Factory custom Yellow Crosshairs. These have been worn a lot, and the frames have some minor dings. Grey polarized lenses installed, they've got quite a few dings though. Box NOT included (I don't have it anymore, that pic is old). In short, you're getting these for their rarity, not for a pristine pair of shades. With a new set of lenses, they'll look fantastic.

True ... but Lasik carries additional risks NOT associated with PRK. The flap can become dislodged later in life, causing (in a small minority of cases) irreparable damage, which can result in uncorrectable vision. We're talking single-digit percentages here, but we figured PRK was a safer choice. Our doctor felt the same way, and wonders why anyone makes the Lasik choice ... a quicker recovery time isn't worth the additional risk, in his view or in ours.

Anyway, if you got Lasik and (so far) have no problems, more power to you! My sister got it 10 years ago, and has had zero issues. Just sayin, we took the safer route, and are also super happy.

I've never snapped one (I have 9 pairs of Radars and do swaps with some frequency). No, I don't lube them or anything.

Perhaps one piece of advice is never to "pull" the ear sox onto or off of the frame. Instead, "push" them off, and "push" them back on. That way, there's no way they can snap. You may not be able to push them into place in one move. If that's the case, you can "caterpiller" them, pushing then pulling. You get the idea.

Anyway, you should never get lasik unless your corneas are incredibly thin ... lasik creates structural defects in your epithelium isn't worth the risk of future problems. The flap never heals. After extensive research, we decided to get PRK for my wife. Basically the same as lasik, except that the healing time is longer, but your eye heals completely and is structurally perfect. She's better than 20/20 now, and no risk of future complications :-)

G26 happens to be my favorite lens, for almost all conditions, and Atomic Orange is pure Oakley madness. Slap on some red icons, and red ear socks, and you get Samus Aran (hence the Metroid name):

Great job, Francois. Backlighting is definitely your friend for translucent objects. If you run a quick search for "bright field photography" you'll run into some more examples -- stuff like wine glasses, etc.

So let's bring this thread back, O-Photographers! There was some debate in another thread about Canon v. Nikon. I do this for a living, and having used both, my opinion is that it doesn't matter.

Funny about the Canon v. Nikon debate. I know more pros who have switched TO Nikon ... but most professionals (including me) will tell you that there's no appreciable difference. It's the photographer, not the camera, that makes great pictures. That's my 2 cents anyway.

Forget the 7D. The APS-C format is where it's at. For the price of a 7D body, you could buy a D300 (we use those) and several great lenses. Crop format makes cameras cheaper, lighter, and more compact.

+1 on the fantastic design. I love it. I'm a photographer, and did my own scratch-build web design myself. It's serviceable, but probably less than what I'd have if I hired someone with your madskillz.
