Supposedly the Thumps have a hidden number on them, that requires an Oakley decoder. I tried UV, but with no luck.

Out of curiosity I'll be checking my Juliet box at lunch. The frame is numberless though so there might not be anything on the box. But then I'll check a few at SGH tonight too that are numbered.

So my guess would be that it's the bottom number and worked something like:

Year - Batch No. ~ Serial No.

First number is the SKU.

It is confusing as the first number sometimes coincides with the year, but not always.

The only thing that may even represent the serial is the AO1894 on the Romeo 2 box. But does that mean every Oakley's number there is a serial? Would two Romeo 2 in the same color combo have different numbers then?

I'm going to check my stash of boxes and see what I get. Would be cool if every pair had a number. Time to reprogram the collection system then.

I'm going to check multiples of the same style/combo tonight at work and see if the second set of digits is different on each.

I checked my Polished/Blue Juliets and this is what I came up with. The box # and the serial # match. On the box it says "A39252" and on the glasses it says JB039252. The only difference is the A takes the place of the first zero in the serial. It's the same way on all of my X-Metals. Here's some pics:

So, we figured out the new way of tracking X-Metals. Well done everyone.

Ok, but I still think that there is something on, or in, the glasses to track each frame. There must be, a company like oakley wouldn't just stop tracking is premium x metal frames. For instance if there was a bad batch of frames that got past QC/QA they must have a way of knowing what frame was produced around that time for warranty/replacement purpose. Maybe I have too much faith in the great O (god forbid), someone in the know, please tell me I'm wrong and that oakley has implemented GPS/RFID tracking into each of it's Xmetal frames?! Scooby/FP? Anyone?
Please...

What I didn't say above was; they must have a way of tracking each frame individually, without the box. How many regular people actually keep the box? And even if they do, You don't send it back O with the glasses if you have a problem with them.

Just thought I would clarify that...

The thing I've wondered for years is what the letter prefix on the box is. I've got items that have all sorts of letters. Wonder what they stand for.

It may be that they've decided to treat the X-metals the same as all their other glasses which don't have serial numbers etched into them. They don't need the serial # on those glasses, so they may figure the need for SNs on X-metals is highly unnecessary.

I wouldn't be surprised if Oakley someday moved to a customization program wherein consumers can pick and choose frame and lens options.....mix and match and all that. If they did something like that, the idea of pre-serialized frames would hinder the program.

I've got two boxes for old Minute replacement lenses, which have serial numbers on them too. Numbers on the left correspond to the SKU, then V00000083 and V00000103. there are also dates printed on the end of the sticker, perpendicular to everything else. same on my Switch, only it has 5 numbers: A06336.

As for homing beacons implanted in my frames, no thanks. they should have you enter the SN when you send in your warranty papers.

I checked a few Oakleys at work tonight and all of our Juliets match up.

Plasma Fire
P032829B on the frame
B32829 on the box

Plasma Ice
JI26017B on the frame
B26017 on the box

Plasma Emerald
JE056506B on the frame
A056806 on the box (don't why this is an A and B)

I checked a few O-Matter frames too and the found the boxes to have different numbers.

Halo - Cork/Bronze
A09272
A07201

Ice Twenty
D64110
D51402

I even found sequential Fives
B53641
B53642

So are these possible production count numbers or tracking numbers/Serials?

Here's my Juliet purchased in January:

Which would make my serial (rearranged like the others) J071738B.

I am starting to think B means a revision or something was changed on the frame. Like when Plasma changed from a gold to a silver.

Just checked out my boxes. The X-Metal's appear to match, but my Time Bomb doesn't. Also my O Matter and wires are very low and I really doubt that I have an early release. I'm guessing they zero out upon changing the first letter.

I'm not sure that's the case, if I'm uderstanding what you're saying correctly. I've got a very early Ruby Overthetop (early as in when it first came out). It has a "F" prefix followed by 5 digits. The first run of the Ruby OTT would necessarily be over 500,000 before it got to mine. I can't imagine Oakley selling that many Overthetops, nevermind the ruby OTTs alone.
Then again, not all products necessarily have to start with "A" as the prefix.

I have just contacted Oakley UK with a warranty issue. The chap at Oakley said " as long as they are Oakley and you have the receipt we will honour it". Seems to me, why (if you are Oakley) have a serial number if the guarantee will be honoured regardless. I still prefer the serial No though.

who still has a receipt after 10 months let alone a few years?
or is the receipt just so they know the date you bought them?

I have every receipt to every pair I have ever purchased whether I own them or not. It's just needed for date of purchase and if you don't have it O knows that the glasses are real and they'll fix them for a small fee.
