i have some fire half jackets... everything looks yellowish through them, which i'm not wild about but whatever. "contrast enhancing"

i've worn ruby overthetops that do the same thing, and to tell you the truth, the lens coating looks a lot like fire too

i've worn fire that made things greenish

i've worn ruby that made things blueish and looked redder than the rubies in teh overthetops

and i've heard that there's some fire lenses that don't look yellow at all

why is this? different batches? different generations? if i didn't know better i'd say the overthetops *were* fire, but i do know better

Yup - (I'm sure someone could tell me different) but it's usually different generations (rather than different batches).

There's two things that can change, the base and the Iridium. I found the Blue Iridium for the M Frames the most notorious; back in the first generation day Blue Iridium always had a grey base, then it switched over to an amber base, then the distinction between that and OO Blue was made (sometimes). The Iridium too seems to have varied. I've seen an old Blue Iridium lens that's almost green.

I think the final distinction between Fire and Ruby lies in the base color of the polycarb. My guess is that to get the price for the Overthetop 'ruby', so that it cost the same as the rest, is that they just put a fire coat on instead of the ruby iridium (which I do think is actually more expensive to apply), and then released it. The blue tint is exactly like the Juliet and Penny's though. Your Half Jacket's aren't as bad to look through though.

Then we get into Goggle lenses, and those are different too. Even with transmission levels.

The only info I can toss in here, my Ruby Twenties have a blue based polycarb lens. Very red with minor yellow and purple shades on the lens coat. I have seen them have a lot of purple in them though. When I had worn fire, 1st gen products like the Twenty and Straight Jacket, It was always greenish at the edge of the lenses and yellowed in the center when looking through them. Always an orange coating though with a little yellow. I haven't bothered with either lens since - Trying new products with them.

I've gotten 2 different batches of Ruby penny lenses already :P And all I wanted was a replacement pair for my original :( For those who didn't see, here was the first set I got back from Oakley

It just ended up being a lot more orange then the deep red I like. And here's the most recent set they sent me.

If you notice, the latest set is a lot more transparent, and is more of a cherry red then the deep red.

Ah well, at this point I've given up, i guess I'll just keep these lenses for fun then.

Hmm, those actually look more like the James Marsden Penny's, except he had a red base in addition to the red coating. People have been wishing for that shade of red, so you should consider yourself lucky.

Actually, yeah. The newest ones are more Ruby, closer to the true color. Like I said, my Ruby shows yellow and purple and it's 1st gen. I can see were at the right tilt your darker pair may show purple. The second pair you show looks like fire.

Hey Neptune, your latest Ruby lenses looks like the type I'm accustommed to seeing in the A-wire ruby/carbon (with the purple tint). Anyone sent in their juliets lately for ruby lenses? Are they also this lighter/transparent ruby? Because I actually prefer the more orange/fire look.

Leo is right, it's transparent like the A-wires. And maybe the picture doesn't show it as well, but it's got a VERY purple tint to it, so it actually reminds me a lot more of the +Red Iridium rather then Ruby. I much prefer the old Ruby/gold then this, it doesn't look like the original Xmen look to me at all.

but the question is, does all three batches of rubies have the famous blue tint while looking thru em?

Paul Liandy (zeroshiki - 9/21/2004 7:20:05 AM)
------------------------------------------------------------on a side note, since i'll only be able to get a ruby lens replacement on october, i guess i'll be getting the purplish one.

i prefer the first one(the upper one) with it's aggresive color, or the newer ones which is more orange than red are also looking good. the newer set in the picture looks really like xmen's version.., but it's more transparent? sigh..

also, everyone here says they have purple tint? does that purple tint means looking thru them from inside or looking at them(from front)? i'll be cursing myself if i ended up getting a purple tint rubies instead of the blue tint! i've been wanting a blue tint oakleys since i found out bout the replacement program.

the rubies on my E Wire 2.1 are a greyish bluish tint, with the ruby iridium coating being a deep red but turns orange at certain angles, and are a bit transparent when looking from the outside. the rubies on my A Wire 2.0 Spring Hinge are different as they have a deep blue, almost purplish tint, and the Iridium coating has a deeper mirror effect than the E Wire 2.1. also, it's not as red, its like a mix between the rubies on the E Wire 2.1 and Fire Iridium. they're definitely different.

hope that makes sense! :) i'll try to take some pictures in a day or two.

All 3 for me still have the blue tint looking through the lenses. The purple tint I'm talking about is what it looks like from the outside, instead of the usual Red/gold look Ruby usually has, my new set has a Purple/red look to it.

neptuneTQ, blue tint looking from the inside? great then! i don't mind the ruby colour even if it's purplish. still prefer the blood red/orange like the first penny u got there, cos i think they are more eye catching. but the newer ones will do just fine
