I recently picked up a Terrigal, and it reminded me of an unknown piece of Oakley history: Gatling Optical.

The Gatling Optical Company was a brand started and funded but JJ and Oakley in 1995, but they never announced this publicly. Gatling was very different from Oakley in that they marketed more towards the western wear crowd, the frames had no curvature, and they featured something like 3-base glass lenses. The frames had ornate filigree like what you would see on glasses similar to Matsuda at the time, and many were made in Japan. Accordingly to one long-time Oakley rep that was responsible for selling both brands, Gatling was eventually sold to Lee Western Wear in the early 2000s.

It turns out someone has actually written an article about it:

Oh nice. That's one I hadn't heard of. Got the Terrigal too, and I've yet to take it out of the package. Really like the metal work they did on those stems and orbitals.
