In 2014, Jeff Staple hinted at a new Oakley Collaboration
With the success of the recent Staple x Liberty of London capsule collection, the Staple Pigeon brand follows up with another high-profile release, teaming up with innovative eyewear specialists Oakley on its iconic Frogskin silhouette.
Using the same Liberty of London "Ptolemy" pattern from the apparel collection, the Frogskins feature a translucent frame with yellow interior ear tips and polarized Ice Iridium lenses. The sunglasses will also come with a custom carry case.
There were four pieces in total, a button-down shirt, t-shirt, 5-panel cap, and the Frogskins. The three apparel items were not associated with Oakley in any way. They were also available several weeks prior to the glasses, first appearing on the Reedspace e-store, and then on the StaplePigeon e-store.
The Frogskins retained the same pattern on a translucent blue frame, with Ice Iridium. Hype was built up several weeks in advance, and finally released on September 29th at 1PM EST. Traffic quickly started overwhelming the server at about 12:50 and the site was offline until around 3PM, at which point some orders started going through. The glasses were sold out by 4:30.
Great recap Dann! I was fortunate enough to get the Blades. I wish I had nabbed the Eyeshades. Do you know how many of the Eyeshades were produced? I thought it was around the 150 qty as well, but you didn't mention it above.
The Eyeshades are a glorious piece for those true collectors that enjoy the collection all nice in the case. For folks like me that enjoy wearing, it is torture to have those lines across the field of vision on such an amazing pair. I've worn them a couple of times, but feel silly for the attempt in the end.
There's sort of something for everyone. From traditional to crazy. Got the radar and eyeshade which I think stood out the most. Blade would have been cool, but too limited.
I run a G26 path in my STPL Radar and the combo is sweet. I will be shooting a Glock Match in Missouri with the original yellow lens this weekend in MO.
That Eyeshade brought back the good'ol "impractical" aspect of Oakley design, along the lines of the Medusa and OTT and such. I'd rank them:
Eyeshade
Radar
Frogskin
Blade
Holbrook
Jawbone
oooOOOoooo, very very interesting. I wouldn't get the Frog (too dangerous of a $$ slippery slope collecting Frogs), but if there's a Blade and Eyeshade release again, then that's talking my language.
