I got these cause I can't wear the Gascans. The Gascans are too narrow around the front temples so the earstems splay out in the back. The Canteens aren't a whole lot wider but they do manage to wrap around a little better than the Gascans. It helps that there are Unobtainium earsocks.

I love the way these glasses mix square and round elements. I know Oakley is getting a little flak from some of the old-timers but I like the new line of fashion concious styles. The fins coming down off the earstems look killer. The only impractical part is that they cause you to sweat a little more than normal (but that may be because they're a little tight on me).

I can't say for certain, but I'd swear that Oakley changed the way they formulate the matte black finish. I had a pair of matte black Unknowns for about 2-days before I returned them. I only wore them for a couple of hours, but the matte black finish started showing all kinds of scuff marks on them. The finish on these Canteens are holding up exponentially better. It's been a little over 2 months and they still look mint.

I can't wait to see what else they come up with to use the new square Icon. The only reason these don't get a 5 from me is because they're too tight for me to wear for more than an hour at a time.

Frame: Rust
Lens: VR28 Black Iridium

A refreshing evolution of the Gascan family in a slightly smaller package. While I love the unique styling of Gascan, it just looks too big and square on me from the front, and the earstems are just a wee bit too short to feel really secure. Canteen addresses both of these concerns and more.

While the lenses are still very square, they do not feel as tall as Gascan, and they taper slightly toward the hinges to give a somewhat more streamlined appearance. The earstems are a decent length and have some curvature and Unobtainium earsocks to provide a good grip on your head.

While the styling elements of Gascan are very plain, Canteen adds some depth and detail, especially on the sculpted nosebridge and "finned" earstems. Nothing wild, but it just looks like more effort was put into the design. The "gapped", angular hinge area seems to have been inspired by Riddle. Of course, Canteen maintains the squared-O icon that was introduced on Gascan, although it is smaller in size to better fit the earstem.

Like Gascan, peripheral vision suffers a bit due to the squareness and tall earstems. I find that I need to turn my head more than usual to be able to check my blind spot when driving.

The Rust frame is very unique crystal brown color that suits the VR28 Black lenses perfectly. If VR28 was a frame color, this is what it would look like! I'm a big fan of VR28 Black. It is so versatile and pleasing on the eyes. Not too dark, enhances contrast, wearable in all sorts of light conditions.

The design of the Canteen is almost comparable to recent models of the Ford Mustang: an old-school look updated with current aesthetics. Commensurate with the family name (Square O), the lenses are rectangular in shape, yet accented by an angular perimeter. Unobtainium earsocks add comfort, and the Rust-colored frame of this rendition compliments the VR28 Black Iridium lenses perfectly. Final verdict: the Canteen is an excellent pair of shades for medium profiles, combining both aesthetics and comfort.

Great for small faces. Short enough flexible arms that it doesn't jam against helmets. Unobtanium material on arms ensure the glasses don't fall off during violent movements.

Frame: Polished Black
Lens: Grey

I have a small head and fit ok but are a little loose but are wearable. The coverage is good for full framed sunglasses and they look cool on. The grey lens is poor in full sun. I don't know why this is a standard issue (SI) lens for military as if you're in Iraq or Afghanistan in full sun these are a bad choice for a lens. When you are driving into the sun and the sun is in front of you below your windscreen you have to squint and the glare is too much. Grey is ok for overcast days but if you're going to wear a lens in overcast i'd pick Bronze or Bronze Polarized as they look better when looking through them.
