I haven't heard much discussion about the pluses or minus' of acetate.

I was looking at the Jupiter vs. the Jupiter LX, one being O-matter and the other being Acetate.

What was the reasoning with going to an acetate material? I heard it was more brittle. Is this true?

I just got a pair of Betray glasses for my Mother in Law and she wants to know if they're hold up like the other O eyeware. That prompted me to questions what the advantges or disadvantages to havinge Acetate as a frame material were.

Just wondering.

David,
Acetate is basically more of a fashion type material. It is a more dense (denser?) material and doesn't have the same flexibility the the nylon blended O Matter has. But because of the density it is much better suited to be layered for strength & design properties. All of Oakley's acetate frames that I can think of have metal hinges and a spike that runs down the arm. To me these are a better alternative to a non-break-a-way all plastic hinge such as the Montefrio & Jupiters have but this is more of a 'brittle' option to the break-a-way hinges that most O Matter frames come with. They are also going to be heavier because of the metal. With a frame warmer you can adjust an acetate frame to have a custom fit but for most people acetate frames will either fit out of the box or not because they do not know of the option to adjust the frame. I have not seen any snapped or separated acetate frames in over 4 years working in O-Stores. I have seen a few broken hinges at the metal point but whatever broke that would have been sure to damage most frames that are not break-a-way style.
Hope that helps!

Thanks that does. My MIL has a habit of sitting on glasses or dropping water things on them when they are in her purse. Se we're concerned she'll end up breaking these since they're not O-matter.

that explanation helps alot.

according to O employee they will be expanding acetate releases to eventually eclipse O Matter...any1 heard this?

Hope not, because Acetate frames are made in Asia, not the US.

I hope not either. I love O Matter. Only thing cool about acetate is the way it can be layered for cool pattern and color effects.

Another item to mention with Acetate is they are shaped and cut flat then pressed/molded into shape. Hence the ease in layering of colors from outside to inside. In this manner design and style will never be as dimensional as O-Matter frames. Fine for women's styles, and those requiring more intricate patterns, but I can't see it ever eclipsing O-Matter as the top material. You'd never see a style like Jawbone again. In the end though with how much women's styles rotate and with newer lifestyle frames, at one point the amount of frames having used Acetate may outweigh the number of O-Matter styles to come before it, but not life of those styles on the shelves or with the consumer.

I like Sideways, but in high heat it softens up. That's one thing with acetate, it can be heated and formed for fit, but I notice if loosing up on hot days. In Sideways case though, you can't have the 3 layers of color on an O-Matter frame like that, so it serves it purpose.

I have not heard that at all. I do know a lot of the new women's line will be Acetate, especially in the fashion line up. But O matter is here to stay.

I am happy to have this info shot down. chances are these employees may not have an idea what's coming but want me to think they do. Like the MD being replaced by the Scalpel...I was told this by several O store/telesales/customer service people...I'd love to be wrong on all counts...no offense to people who like the new styles but there's room for both...I hope.

We'd have to see the application of acetate on some of the non-fashion frames or the sport frames. I don't think they would take too well. I like the way the acetate frames feel to the touch, but they are probably more brittle than o-matter. I could be wrong though since they are heat adjustable.

I'm not a materials or plastics engineer!

I wouldn't say brittle at all, just a totally different material with different properties.

I don't think they will release Acetate to the point that it eclipses O Matter. Acetate just isn't light enough or flexible enough for sport use. I'll assume it is more expensive than O Matter as well.

It isn't a good or bad thing, it is just what purpose you want to use it for. Fashion and RX are it's main uses in my book.
