Hi, Rx-folks!
I bought a pair of O3 which arrived today. When I took the glasses out of the box, I noticed, that the hinges are a bit loose. I could twist them a bit, but when it's on my head, it's quite a good fit.
Anyway I brought it to my local OPD who also do the repairs and the guy told me that this is common problem with this frame and he can't fix it. Does any of you have a pair of this frame and tell me whether I should return it or they're just like this?

It's a common problem with any rimless model.

yeah it happened to my first set of why 3's so my second set just sits and looks pretty in the display case.

Thank you both for the fast answer. Do you think it's still suitable for everyday usage? I never had rimless glasses until this point, so I need some advice or encouragement.

If you're okay with occasional tightening.

The problem is, that the tightening doesn't help. I have the feeling like the springs would be loose. I don't know how to describe it more specific.

Is it the hinges that are loose or is it the lens mounting that is loose? I've never had problems with the hinges. The lens mounting did need regular tightening until my OPD put some special glue on the screw and the've been rock solid ever since. I really enjoy my rimless frames and I hope everything works out for you too.

With the mounting I have no problems. Only the hinges are quite not the best. I don't know what to do. Shall I send it back?

If your not happy send them back. There is no reason to accept anything your not happy with. You're going to have to wear these every day and any problems will only get worse over time.

I just sent a message to the seller on ebay. Maybe I can send it back to him for refund. But I don't know whether I should choose a different type of frame or I should stick to O3.
Which rimless frame is your favorite?

I've found that the Why 3 get loose if worn often. The Why 8.1 don't but there isn't a RX Why 8.1.

The problem with rimless frames is that if the grip is too tight, the lenses crack. If it is too loose, the frame is loose.

I never had rimless so far, but you are right, Harry. Thanks to unabtanium the grip is good, but I'm a bit sceptic.

The why 3 had a problem with the mounting so that's why Oakley changed it on subsequent rimless designs. You shouldn't have a problem with cracked lenses on the more recent models. I've enjoyed the split thread for a long time and recently changed to a Nanowire 2 frame with clear Zeiss (curved!) lenses and I really love it: very light, hammer earstems and memory metal to boost!

I don't know what kind of lenses I'll choose, but it'll be polycarbonat. Do you think that the photocromic lenses are good?

I've been using titanium Why 3s for almost a year now as daily glasses and strangely enough, I haven't had a single problem with loose mountings. I was expecting to have to tighten screws now and then but I haven't even had to do that. These are by far the best glasses I've ever worn in my 15 something years of wearing glasses, they are really light to the point of not even feeling them on my face. Love them to death, if I had to get another pair of glasses, I'd very likely just go with a Why 4 next. I also love how they have the design cues of the X-metal series, they look like a work of art just sitting there in a case with their X-metal trademark gullwing earstems.

I'll probably keep this O3. When worn, I don't notice this failure with the hinges. But I'm pretty sure that this won't be my last Oakley Rx. =)

My first O3 also had some loose hinges. The hinges were later replaced with new ones, and it looks like Oakley changed the spring hinge mechanism on these, as the new hinges were much more precise than my first ones.

Is the hinge replacement a difficult thing? How much did it cost and where whas it done? Did it take long to fix it?

The hinges were simply replaced with new ones from a later production run. The spring (or at least what you see of it on the inside) is golden now, and there's a small hole right behind the spring. It was done by the customer service in Germany, at no costs (warranty).

How could I find out how much would this repair cost if there is no warranty?
