Hey guys, Dann added a custom section to the gallery. I've uploaded a few of the more interesting Oakley's I've seen on the japanese sites, but I'm curious to see what anyone here's done or seen as custom Oakley's as well, so start uploading away!
Heh, those aren't mine, I uploaded some pics from some of the Japanese sites posted here. Those were from a site that has a lot of their own aftermarket parts. They have another set of ventilated Splices that are side ventilated instead of the holes. They also have polarized Titanium Clear lenses. The Juliet earsock fins are also from the same site.
Two new Splice in the gallery. Neither of which are mine and I can't find the originator. I do know the steps were laid out in pictures. The bolts were taken out (nope, can't remember how) and the O-Matter was painted, then the works of it was reassembled.

Also, what paint do you think what used to paint the pieces and which pieces were painted, the FMJ coated pieces, or for instance the BLK or Crystal BLK pieces?
Im stoked to try this out!

Hi - I think Dann posted those w/the vented lenses. I believe the best way is to remove the lenses, cover them with a tape that won't leave residue, and go to town with a rotary tool. You may want a stiff drink as well.
Don't blame me if you wreck a pair though; I've never tried custom work before.
I don't know what type of paint either, though off the top of my head I would recommend an enamel with a clear coat on top. I'm almost positive the FMJ parts were left unpainted.

So for the lenses, you actually have to CUT them with like a dremel style tool?
Then for the painting, it would probably be best to actually use the dremel is sand the piece down, to make a rough surface, and then apply a couple coats to each piece?
Any other ideas, let me know

As I see it, with the dremel you can get small diameter grinding wheels shaped like long cylinders (you don't need to use a saw blade or cutting wheels). With that, just figure out where you want your vents and keep your hand steady.
As for roughing the surface, you can find very fine sandpaper at hobby and craft stores. Ratings like #0000 or 1500, as high as you can go basically, would be fine. Anything under 500 grit would be nuts. An average dremel could demolish a frame before you blinked, and it would be all over but the crying. A dremel for roughing the surface couldn't do anything sandpaper and 10 minutes of patience wouldn't do. However, a slightly sandblasted frame might look nice. Or it might look like a victim of neglect. Hmmm....
That makes me think of something - the matte black frames are solid 0-Matter. The FMJ frames are black cored with FMJ sprayed on. Some other finishes are similar: in my Smoke M-Frames, you can tell at the hinges that the core is black. Anyone know if all O-Matter is black-cored? I know of course that crystal colours are the exception, apparently it breaks more frequently (though proportionately it is probably no big deal) than the solid frames. What about Gold X, Cannon Red, etc.? All black cores? No big deal, just curious.

Alright... All noted... Now let me ask. Do you Brush on the paint, airbrush, can? What do you think. Im going to do this and then going to judge whether or not i want to fix it. Ill let you know. Also, please, anyone who knows anymore let me know. This will be fun.

I posted both pics of the ventilated Splices, and they are actually lenses that a Japanese sunglass store sells. I'm not sure how they make them myself, but they actually have a manufacturer supply it to them I believe. The store also sells polarized Titanium Clear lenses for the Splices. Too bad the site had no english and they don't do orders, just in person sales :P Makes me wish I lived in Japan.
The dremel idea though is good one to make your own at home. I think it's worth screwin' around with a set of lenses to get your own pair that few would ever have :)
Some of the lighter colored frames have a white base. And I would say its probably true that the crystal and rootbeer color frames seem to crack a little more often.
