googling for obscure Time Tank colorways
Nice to virtually meetcha - would be great to connect w/ other O-heads!! I've been collecting a few lines of O glasses for around 10 yrs, mostly different X-Metals & mashups of different TwoFace colorways. I'm starting to get into the watches, particularly Time Tank and the odd Hollowpoint, dreaming someday of an FMJ...

Like many of you, I'm always looking to mix & match different finishes & colors, and I'm especially intrigued by all the Time Tank customization that's possible. I do have access to a laser cutter/engraver, and I'm going to experiment with making some more-or-less-drop-in face replacements for the Tank, will keep you posted how that goes!! (probably slowly)

I was thinking along the lines of this:
- Dann

Dang, nice! That's awesome, is there a good source for classic graphics like that?? (hah, maybe there's even stuff on this site that I haven't poked around to see yet...)

Good call. I've never used anything but the main time dial on mine, so simplicity is good.

Maybe the Grip treads or something like that. - Dann

Awesome call, Dann - I was never into BMX in my youth, but friends were and I've got hazy memories of what those grips looked like. I did some googling just now, and most of what comes up are:
* Oakley 1, which has the circular dimples in a hex grid, and the box has that cool swirl grip logo that I noticed here on this site

* Oakley 3, looks kinda like a ski pole grip to me, has diagonal ribs for the palm rest - is this where Oakley's whole diagonal line motif maybe got its start?? I love that these were only $7.98/pair, and they call the rubber Unobtanium 52! (didn't know that there were different numbers to Unobtanium)

Any other good grip patterns out there that I'm missing??

Welcome. I really look forward to seeing what you can customize. - Dann

Thanks, Dann!! The thing I'm hot on now is to try & make something that's more conceptual/graphic as a TT/MM face. It's just personal preference, but I've never been that crazy abt multidial/chronograph watches, just too busy-looking for me. So I'm thinking abt removing everything but the hour and minute hand, but leaving the underlying movement intact. The idea is that the new face would cover up the 3 extra chronograph posts, so you'd never know from looking that something had been taken away.

For the face graphic, the direction I'm thinking is something kinda abstract, yet based on Oakley heritage, perhaps based on a section of topo map around Foothill Ranch??

Hi Jesse,
And welcome.
Time Tank used to be called time tank when first released. Then a famous watchemaker, Cartier to name it, decided that there registered tradename Tank would remain unique. So they filed a complaint and Oakley had to change the name of their watch.
It then became Minute Machine. - BiGCoB

Aha - thanks for clearing that up! I looked up the Cartier Tank just now, and I think the Oakley one looks more like a badass tank, lol.
Any idea how long Oakley was on the market before the change?

Many thanks!!

So, here's a n00b question: why does the TT / MM have two names? Were they for different markets, or did the name change at some point in the product run, or??
