I thought this deserved it's own thread...

From this website: http://outside-blog.away.com/blog/2009/08/the-spoke-word-oakleys-4000-sungl

I was looking for some reviews on tents and sleeping bags and instead found this!

Comments from Colin Baden

Baden acknowledges the potential perception problems with releasing a $4,000 pair of sunglasses in today’s economy (or any economy?). But he says the C Six project has been in the works for a few years and was more about discovering what was possible in Oakley’s design studios and factories, rather than its retail outlets. “I wondered about it. I did,” says Baden. “But Oakley is a quirky company, unpredictable, so this was in keeping with that spirit.”

Wow! Great find Adam. That's got all kinds of little pick-ups in it.
-eyewear, footwear, and watches
-three interlocking segments over a flexible titanium spine
-small rotary cams that click into place in both the open and closed positions
-a worldwide release of just 250 pairs
-an aluminum version of the C Six

Very cool Adam, thanks! I wonder how much the Elite watch and boots will cost? Expensive or not I'm jazzed to see what they look like. I do like hearing that there will be an Aluminum/Oluminum version of the C6 though.

Perfect timing! I was hoping to see a few pictures of this naughty beast before starting work on my next pair. I will be studying that intently. I need more angles!

The titanium in the earstem is very interesting! Cool idea to give it a little bit more give.

I just might try that. :)

i think the watch is the time bomb II and the shoe would be a SHOE ONE variant

It did occur to me that the watch could be the TBII. I guess I was thinking the Elite watch may be something else since the TBII is already supposed to be an anniversary edition in a sense.

I would agree also that the "elite" watch is probably the Time bomb II...can't wait for that to surface!

By some rough calculations, I have come to the conclusion that I would need to be grossing about $805k in income a year for me to be totally cool with dropping retail on the C Six. Since I'm not really there on the income front, I'm afraid I won't be hunting down a pair come release date. Ahh, to dream, though.

Yes, The Time Bomb 2 (Carbon Fiber Bezel/Red model) is the Elite watch.

No, the Shoe One is not the elite shoe. Its a new version of something a bit more obvious.

I don't really need that money for a downpayment on a house, do I? I mean, I need to have a pair to study so I can make my own versions. :)

for some reason it is very tempting to put the money out there for these... but at the same time I can hear a voice in my head saying "omg he has actually gone crazy". If I can hear voices in my head that is just proof haha... it's not going to happen though.

The C Six is still unimpressive design-wise in my eyes, but the news of a new version of an old classic shoe is very exciting. I can't wait to see what Oakley does for Elite footwear.

The more I study these the more I like them. There are some neat details on there. I particularly like the sculpted profile at the bottom edge of the lens that follow up into the earstem. That's nice.

The carbon ones are awesome, because they are carbon. The aluminum ones are decidedly 'meh' as the plain material just has no draw or excitement. They just look like plain ol' sunglasses made of plan ol' metal.

I think the C Six carbon is incredible, and limited to 250 pairs it's a collector/uber rich guy must have. IMO the alum one would need to be priced more like the Pit Boss, otherwise you are just a goof that spent $2000 on a pair of glasses to look like you are as cool as the guy with the rare $4000 glasses.

Either way, I'll never have either one. :)

This should prove to be interesting. I have some questions though...

1) Will we wind up seeing all sorts of athletes and race crews sporting these while the general public can't get them like the Pit Boss? I mean really, this is stoooooooooooooopid on their part if so. I can't get a color in the boss because they gave away a sh!t load of Bosses to wrench turners and sideline people in racing and pro sports...WTF! I can understand Lance Armstrong maybe, but 4k each and they don't need any advertisement like that. Should prove to be interesting.

2) Will it wind up being the flop of the century?

3) Why would anyone consider the new TB to be Elite?

4) Will they toss one out at the next Co-Pilot event?? That is realistically the only way the vast majority of us will get one or can justify it.

I don't know if it will flop or not, but if it does flop, here's another good question: what would be its price on SAC?

I think that the likely scenario is that most of us, the most ardent fans of the Oakley brand, will never see a Carbon C Six in person. 250 spread around the world is just not enough. Maybe they might have one in a store for a while, but I think that most of them will go to the collectors with cash pretty quickly (which would include athletes and other celebrities who already like Oakley).

It's still a pretty sweet piece of gear.
