Last I read the script that was turned in in the last few months was atrocious and changed way too much. I think unless the characters remain as they are in US comics it just won't fly. I don't care if they modernize, but it needs to by Duke, Snake-Eyes, Scarlett, Roadblock, Shipwreck, Stalker, Flint and a few cameos. Why that team, because that's the current roster and they kick ass. I think the script tha was recently penned had Snake-eyes named such because of a gambling problem or eye deformity and he could still talk.
It is a shame, but I'm not surprised they're going in that direction. I'm still gonna watch it when it comes out, but I'm not expecting much. Hopefully I'll be as surprised as I was with Transformers.
I really would have liked for it to be based on the original 9 G.I. Joe characters, Cobra Commander, Storm shadow, Destro and the Baroness thats it. And why not set it during the early 80's and keep the Vietnam war as the background combat experience for the G.I. Joe team? I think in an attempt to appease the world paramount is going to end up alienating the hardcore G.I. Joe fan.
I suspect it has a lot to do with licensing and spin-off issues. I think it's easier to sell toys these days based on a futuristic international strikeforce than an past era-intensive concept. Easier to create new cartoons as well. That's one problem with major franchises. A big part of the business is serving the licensees rather than the property and core fans. It's unfortunate, and we've seen a lot of bad movies because of it. But I'm always hoping for the best.
Take a look at the gloves. The carbon fiber on the thumb looks like the CF on the Factory Pilot gloves. Though there are gloves from other brands that do have this feature, I wonder if the ones in the GI Joe move are Oakley made, given other products (such as the SI Boot) making an appearance in the film.
