My friend was in the airforce and basically said all glasses must 1) have non mirrored lenses, 2) muted logos, hence the gunmetal icons, and eventually the plastic molded, and 3) not trendy. - Dann
Yep, that's still the regulation. The problem I have with it tho, is the wordplay with "muted" and "trendy". The reg unfortunately doesn't go into anymore detail than that and I really wish it did. Senior leaders have used their own discression to interpret the reg, which tends to come from a more traditional place when correcting Soldiers. I can remember as far back as 2002 being derrided for wearing issued sunglasses and gloves to a rifle range before that gear was officially considered standard PPE. Senior NCOs used to hate the idea of letting troops wear eyewear because they felt it detracted from uniformed appearance. I even know someone who just last year that was reluctant to pick up an SI HJ 1.0 because he didn't want to risk getting in a pissing contest over the icons. I am glad Oakley started doing the whole "covert" thing because it definitely saves a lot of potential hassle. Not that every unit is like that, of course. Some places take no issue with Iridium lenses or silver icons. It really just depends on who is in charge and how they choose to enforce it.
