Just picked up my first pair of Jawbones and it came with the exact micro-bag that has been coming with my Split Jackets. It blackish/gray with the split sketch design on it and it says Oakley across the micro. I ask because then I spotted these and it says Jawbone across the same micro. Are all Jawbones suppose to come with the Jawbone micro or is it hit and miss?

All JBs I've seen had the "Jawbone" mircrobag (though I *think* they did eventually came with the "Oakley" bag before transitioning to being Racing Jackets). New RJs should come with the "Oakley" bag, unless they are special editions that have their own unique bag.

My friend was in the airforce and basically said all glasses must 1) have non mirrored lenses, 2) muted logos, hence the gunmetal icons, and eventually the plastic molded, and 3) not trendy.

I have been grabbing up switchlock microbags over the past few months and I noticed that as well. Looks like the Jawbone, being the first switchlock, came with a microbag with "Jawbone" print. Once the Split Jacket was released and the Fast Jacket was on it's way, I guess Oakley decided to replace Jawbone with "Oakley" as I haven't ran into any switchlock bags with either "Split Jacket" or "Fast Jacket".

It looks like there are three versions (or types, I guess) of this microbag. The "Jawbone" is the first, with a large tag at the base and a "lens pocket" tag at the mouth. The second version has "Oakley" print, retained the lens pocket tag at the mouth, but replaced the large outer tag with a small ellipse one moved to the side seam. Version 3 lost the lens pocket tag and instead has lens pocket print on either side of the small pouches. The only other variation I have found so far is the switchlock OCP bag. It has the OCP Custom print and no outer tags.

They actually still had the "Jawbone" mircrobag well after the Split Jacket was introduced, so they existed in tandem. For instance, the Atmos pictured above came out a while after the SpJ was introduced into the market, and it came with a JB bag.

Thanks guys for the help! I got the Infrared pair at a good price so I'll just have to hunt down a Jawbone micro or just accept it and move on.

Yep, that's still the regulation. The problem I have with it tho, is the wordplay with "muted" and "trendy". The reg unfortunately doesn't go into anymore detail than that and I really wish it did. Senior leaders have used their own discression to interpret the reg, which tends to come from a more traditional place when correcting Soldiers. I can remember as far back as 2002 being derrided for wearing issued sunglasses and gloves to a rifle range before that gear was officially considered standard PPE. Senior NCOs used to hate the idea of letting troops wear eyewear because they felt it detracted from uniformed appearance. I even know someone who just last year that was reluctant to pick up an SI HJ 1.0 because he didn't want to risk getting in a pissing contest over the icons. I am glad Oakley started doing the whole "covert" thing because it definitely saves a lot of potential hassle. Not that every unit is like that, of course. Some places take no issue with Iridium lenses or silver icons. It really just depends on who is in charge and how they choose to enforce it.

I agree with you. I only meant that the Jawbone print likely was first and the rest seemed to follow that order. I have no doubt they were used in tandem or that they were tied to specific releases. I actually wasn't even aware there were different versions of the same microbag until I saw two switchlock bags together and noticed the difference. Now I have found yet another reason to go and bug the guys down at the Vault store. Life is sweet!!!

What is the difference between Matte Black, Black Ink, and Jet Black?
What version is Polished Black derived from?
(That's two questions; is that too many? DOH! that's three...)

Matte Black is an opaque, non-shiny finish with a very light graining.

Black Ink is translucent (but very dark... looks opaque unless the frame is backlit). I think it is only offered in matte thus far.

Jet Black is shiny and smooth... seems to be identical to Polished Black.

Interesting note... if you look at a Polished Black frame against a strong backlight, it is actually a really, really dark crystal red... but opaque under normal conditions.

Jet Black is the older name for Polished Black. In fact many of the frames using that name changed over mid-run according to the catalogs.

There's also Flat black on the OTT and older Frogskins.

Polished Black also shows up as crystal clear under infrared night vision.

This question came up so hopefully this is the right thread to ask it...

Can original Eyeshade lenses fit into the new re-issued Eyeshade frames that have been released (such as the heritage models, TDF, etc.)?

I know handling vintage iridium lenses could cause crazing when installing them so it's probably not recommended. Maybe a non-iridium lens would run less of a risk, but just curious if anyone has tested this out.

I have been spending a lot of time in the swimming pool lately and was thinking about why we have not seen the O launch a pair (entire range) of swimming goggles.

Optics, rubber, a product in need of improvement. It is all there. Is Oakley staying away from this because they can't make a pair of goggles that doesn't fog after 20 laps?

Every 3 or 4 years someone poses that very question to Oakley (along with why they don't make true mountaineering sunglasses). I always forget the official response, but it doesn't seem like they are interested in it. Perhaps there's not a big enough market for it or they don't want to put down the investment to make it, but I always got the impression they didn't think it was in their best interests. Personally I would love to see one.

In resurrecting older Oakleys, I've amassed a fair pile of slightly less than perfect lenses, (some e-boy sellers would rate them as "mint"...ahem) that I'd like to find a use for.
Best I can come up with is making a mobile of 'em for the wife's cat, but that's more than he deserves...
Any suggestions?

Why not take several like lenses, stack them like Pringles, glue them together with a sturdy compound, and then grind them into chess pieces?

Rumor is that might change. Much like they said they didn't want to to make sporting equipment but now there are two helmets with a third in development and hockey and football visors are getting looked at again as well.

Been collecting for little over a year now and by no means do I know everything about O's. That being said, I've mainly dabbled in the Split Jacket/Racing Jacket/Jawbone pairs mostly. I did not know until today (and I saw them 2x now) that there is a Ducati Split Jacket?!?! Where the hell did that come from and why don't I have it:)

I suppose you can call it the Ducati Split Jacket, but technically it's a Wind Jacket without the gasket. I don't remember seeing a SKU for a SpJ, but there is one for the WdJ.
