Winged Skull/Downhill Derby Trophy

There are a lot of fake trophies out there. Trophies were first replicated by a very well known collector with a large collection, and then other collectors followed suit and created even more replicas. All bomb and torpedo trophies have been faked, so has the Frog on the mine trophy, the HQ trophy and a lot more. The Genie can’t be put back into the bottle, unfortunately.

However, there are some that have not been faked (thus far anyway), such as the 3D printed trophies because most don’t have access to the print files just yet.

One of these trophies is the Winged Skull trophy. Created for the Oakley Downhill Derby, the trophy comes in at least four different sizes and detail levels, the largest of which is half a woman’s torso.

The trophy is truly a piece of art. Since it is printed, it contains an amazing level of detail, and the layered paint application is fantastic. Because of the statue’s level of detail and the quality of paint, it is one of my favourite trophies:

Here is the largest version of the trophy:

Sorry to hack your thread Oak, but one quick question regarding the Co Pilot event. Are these some kind of special release or were they just a custom

- O-bsession

All staff working at the event made custom splatter Collectors Frogskins (which were still relatively new at the time). The guy on the left told me that he didn't like frogs, so he took one of the 2005 RazorBlades and applied the same paint treatment. He was the only one.

That trophy Oak is truly an honor to even see much less posess. Totally jealous but I’m glad it’s in the hands of a good man!

Metal Gladiator Helmet Trophy

This trophy has been given out as an internal award for various reasons over the years, each with it’s own badge or tag adorning it. However, the most well-known version of the metal gladiator trophy is the “Sick O” award. Given out at BMX events, the trophy was for the rider(s) that completed the best tricks for the event. Here is one of the Sick O trophies given out in Germany at a Red Bull event many years ago:

Spotted one at HQ in 2005. Snapped a pic since they didn't seem to care about that at the time.

Misc Trophies

Here are some of my other trophies I really like that no one has replicated yet as far as I know:

Living in Canada, the Stanley Cup-inspired one is the favourite out of the bunch. Since the inner cup is stainless steel, you can actually drink champagne out of it.

Medals and Dog Tags

Oakley has made/commissioned many, many medals and dog tags over the years for everything from retail GWP, internal awards, marathons, championship tournaments and more.

The below pic shows some of my medal collection. I think everyone knows about the dog tags. The other medals were given out for various races including the 2016 Malaysian Cycling Tour, 2017 Leadville 100 and various mini 10k marathon in NY:

Aluminum Sales Summit Awards

Closing off the “trophy and awards” segment of this thread are aluminum plaques given at the 2001 and 2002 Sales Summit. The beauty of the plaques is its simplicity. It really is just a big rectangular block of aluminum etched with the detail of the award and the winner’s name. If you like heavy blocks of metal, these awards are for you:

Original Prototypes

I love the true prototypes, the printed/SLA/clay models that are made before a product gets produced in O Matter/C5/SS/titanium/aluminum/acetate. Seeing the creative direction changes from concept design to physical realization is amazing. It’s always interesting to also see the cool designs and how limiting factors such as daily functionality/durability and manufacturing capabilities play into the final item released to the public.

3D printing being what it is and prototypes being what they are, it’s only a matter of time before unscrupulous collectors start printing their own items and claiming they are the real deal. Before that happens on a wide scale level, I proudly present some of my favourite printed prototypes from Oakley. The best ones are the ones that have moving parts:

Here are a couple pics of some being printed:

Here are some other random pics from inside Oakley HQ:

Zero “Marketing Prototypes”

Other than the original true prototypes, Oakley puts out what I call “marketing prototypes”. These pairs are virtually identical to the regular release pairs (though the 0.2p was slightly different) but have the word “prototype” etched or engraved on the lens or frame. Everyone has seen the C Six “prototypes” with the earsock and box plate engravings, but Oakley did something similar back in the day for pairs such as the 0.2, 0.2p, 0.3 and 0.3p. All these marketing prototypes are made for promotional purposes rather than for the product development process.

I had previously asked Scott Bowers about it and he provided this guess: “Good question on the "PROTOTYPE" engraving on the .2 and .3. I truly don't recall. I have a pair myself that I was just looking at and tried to remember the significance. I don't remember it being athlete specific, but more that "PROTOTYPE" was cool back then so we might have engraved some just to spark some buzz.”

Here are my pairs of 0.2p and 0.3:

I skipped out on picking up the 0.2 pair, but hopefully I will come across it again one day. Another OR member has the 0.3p pair, which I’m hoping I get a chance to pick up one day as well.

Also the prototypes had the gen1 circular orbitals, so they must have been in production prior to the lens shape change, while also making the decision to no longer frost the edges.

Blacked Out SF16-C

Oakley often sends prototypes or pre-production pieces to its athletes to test out and provide feedback on. The below SF16-C is such a pair. Other than the matte clear nosebombs, the entire pair is a black version of the Ferrari pair (it has the etched lens, badge plates on the earstem, and CF in the lower orbital):

A former Oakley employee passed on the above pair to me. I thought a blacked out version of the SF16-C was odd, so I asked another Oakley designer/modeller I know that was on the development team what it is. The exact words he wrote to me: "That was one of are frist prototype."

Artist Proof Pewter Car

In the world of art prints and limited production statues, “Artist Proofs” are samples provided for final approval (or changes, if required) before going into full production.

The below item was one of the artist proofs provided for approval prior to the production of the 100 Pewter Funny Cars:

Other than having no numbered plate welded under the upper portion of the car, I don’t see any other difference from the released version.

VR50 Ruby Iridium

Total_O had some of the coolest stuff back in the day. He introduced us to factory items like the Copper Romeo, Carbon Penny, Black Chrome Juliet, lenses that weren’t available at retail, and more. Times have changed since then and collectors are able to replicate some of this stuff. PVD, DLC and water dip coatings can be done exactly the way Oakley does it; Oakley put out previously unavailable lens colours in their OCP (such as Ruby, Emerald and Ice for the MD or R2); and collectors are custom cutting lenses from replacement lenses.

However, there are also a number of things from his offerings that can’t be replicated. One of the category of items are the test lenses that were made but never put into officially released eyewear. -Red is one of the coolest and probably the most notable out of the bunch for most.

For me, the most interesting is VR50 Ruby Iridium because it is a precursor of a future lens. Kinda. Here is VR50 Ruby Iridium from 2006 in a Square Wire 2.0:

Oakley eventually used a version of the lens (Oakley turned it into a Photochromic lens) in the 2011 Echelon Jawbone and Radar.

The Clear Thump

Before the release of the original Thump, Oakley created a handful of clear versions to show off the internal electronics. The Clear Thumps had different coloured earbuds (black, white, clear) and were used in photoshoots for promo material, displayed in key O Stores and for internal purposes.

I had contact with one of the former Thump developers, and this is one of the things he wrote to me: “I worked there for 2 years and was on the Thump Development Team, that's how I got those clear ones... I actually built them (and the other 5) myself.

The Clear Thump he kept was one of the ones that has the clear earbuds:

Here are some marketing material with the clear Thump:
