Starting a thread for me to post some of my favourite Oakley stuff. Some you’ve seen before while others you haven’t; some are common and some are hard to find; some are worth some money while others have very little value. Either way, this is stuff I really enjoy and find interesting for one reason or another. All are authentic Oakley. No replicas are featured.

Oh yeah, I’m not a photographer so you will find the pics wanting.

X-men Visor and X2 Penny props

I love when my hobbies crossover with each other. I’ve loved X-men since the late ‘80s/early ‘90s and I’ve always liked movies. When pics appeared in late 1999 of James Marsden wearing the visor (or “blast shield” as Oakley called it back then) and Juliet developed specifically for the movie, it was a fan’s dream come true for me.

I wasn’t able to buy any of the official studio visor and eyewear props from the 20th Century Fox/eBay auction in August 2000, but I was was lucky enough to pick up the Oakley-developed ones many years later.

Obviously they are not screen-used versions, since there are several differences. I once asked Jason Spencer why the X2 Penny that came from Oakley had copper FMJ rather than the grey colour that appeared in the movie. He seemed perplexed by this question and said that is exactly what he provided to production (I get the feeling he hasn’t watched the movie). What complicated things further is Oakley.com featured the copper FMJ X-men Penny prop on their website during its promotion of X-men: Days of Future Past, which fully supports that’s what they provided for the movie’s development.

The story speculated is Oakley provided certain props to the movie production but the props department modifies them as they see fit. That would explain why all the pictured props from Oakley differ from the end product in the movies.

At any rate, the above props are a couple of my favourite Oakley-made things ever.

Some pics of the Penny as it appeared on Oakley.com, Marsden wearing the Visor in 1999, and the X-men display in the Irvine O-Store in March 2000:

Star Trek Helmet

Many of you who have toured HQ have seen the below helmet. It was created for Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country movie from 1991. This particular helmet with +Red Iridium didn’t make it as a screen-used prop since the one in the movie had Blue Iridium, but that was the intention. As with some Oakley developed props, the Oakley logo was put on the back of the helmet:

You can see a portion of the logo onscreen, but you’ll need a clear HD TV screen, an HD version of the movie, and the settings on the TV to be bright (such as on sports mode). I can’t quite capture it with the tools I have, but you get the idea:

Half Wire and Wiretap from “The Punisher”

I’ve acquired many screen-used Oakley movie props over the years. Unfortunately most aren’t of major characters but rather background ones.

As mentioned above, the Oakley props that resonate with me the most are the ones that appear in comic book movies. Like Hellboy and Blade 2, The Punisher from 2004 was given a lot of Oakley products to use in its production (though the movie itself was a commercial and critical failure compared to the other two). You can see several different items such as a Detonator watch, SI Assault Boot and A Wire amongst other eyewear.

The below Wiretap and Half Wire were used in production and came with a COA from Premiere Props (in conjunction with the production company, Lions Gate Films):

Here is a screen shot of the Cutter character wearing the silver Half Wire in the background:

Prototype OTT

I think most of us old timers know who Donnie Faulkner is. For those who aren’t familiar, Donnie (along with his wife Holly) ran the NHRA Rolling O from 1999 to 2009.

Donnie and Holly were the source of the majority of Scelzi Romeo 2 and Five 3.0 that ended up in collectors’ hands. Using their superior customer service, they shipped out orders worldwide for OR members and even got the boxes signed by Scelzi for whoever asked for it. Before that, I didn’t even know they offered such a service.

After Donnie left Oakley he liquidated most of his collection on eBay. Having reported directly to JJ and being in tight with all of Oakley’s sponsored drivers such as Scotty Cannon and Gary Scelzi, you can imagine the collection he amassed. The quality of his items rivaled Total_O’s from back in the day. Signature one-off X-metals, rare promo items such as Oakley beer, custom made Oakley rings and much more were part of his lot.

An interesting item that eventually ended up in my collection is one of the Prototype OTTs (of which Donnie had a few versions):

I think the pair is made out of some resin. Certainly it’s fragile. No idea why it’s shaped the way it is. A key feature I found intriguing is at some point the OTT was envisioned to have nosebombs with a similar design to the original Racing and Water Jackets. Maybe they will have that feature when Oakley re-visits the OTT again one day.

First Production OTT

It would probably come as no surprise that Scotty Cannon was the recipient of the first production OTT. Hand carved with 1A, Scotty took the pair and used the crap out of it. So much so the left orbital is broken and the lens doesn’t stay in place properly anymore.

The story as quoted: “very first OTT. designed and given to Scotty Cannon. He wore them so much, eventually they broke. When they did he gave them to us for a new pair so we asked him to sign them since they were made for him and they were his actual pair.”

Eventually it found its way back into Donnie Faulkner’s collection and then sold when he left the O:

The Colin Baden Glasses

“The Badman” wears some of the coolest Rx eyewear. I think he’s still wearing the Madman Rx these days. Back during the 2009 Co-Pilot event, an OR member described the glasses Colin had on. I was intrigued because it sounded different than what was available from Oakley Rx at the time. It turned out to be this pair:

Oakley ended up never releasing it. Probably for the best since it’s not the most robust or durable piece. It’s fragility wouldn’t stand up to daily wear and tear.

Still, I wanted to own one even if only for its rarity and the fact that the second most recognizable person in Oakley’s history wore one. I was lucky enough to eventually acquire it and remains one of my favourite pieces:

Everytime I see a thread started by Oak, I know I'll be amazed.
Thank you for sharing this content. It's amazing. I love to see rare items. But when those items have such nice background stories, it make them even better.
This is the true essence of collecting.

Sealed 12-636 Ducati Juliet, Serial #11

Since we’re on the topic of the 2009 Co-Pilot event, Dann received a sealed pair of Ducati Juliets with serial #11 during the event. I forget what the trivia question was that won the pair, but hopefully he can chime in.

This pair was meant for Ducati rider Ruben Xaus. Not sure why he didn’t end up with them, but it’s good for me that he didn’t.

I’m eternally grateful and thankful to Dann for passing them down to me. It’s not everyday you get to own a sealed Juliet meant for a sponsored athlete and given out publicly at a renowned collectors’ event:

Ice Ducati Juliet

Oakley made variants of the Ducati lens, though none were for sale officially. Total_O had Fire and Ice lenses back in the day, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they had Emerald and Ruby as well.

Before the replicators start faking lenses as well and passing them off as real, here is my Ice Ducati Juliet:
