I've been thinking of getting a new Mars. Oh, the no-frills one I have is fine, but it was 2nd hand and it does need a bit of fixing up; one of the earstems is uneven and the coating is coming off at the bridge.

Then again, through eBay, I might be able to get someone to get me a Mars Crater. Now, I love the Mars design to bits, and I wouldn't mind adding this one to my collection...

So, anyone have any pictures of the Crater? I've never seen real pictures of those yet. They look cool, but don't those thread holes let in light?

The second more sensible option is getting my Mars refurbished. Can Oakley recoat it and fix the hinges? There're a few chips off the frame as well, but asking to fix that is a bit much I think.

My guess is that if you send them to Oakley with the $29 fee, they will probably just give you a brand new frame. Call the customer service line. They should be able to tell you what they will do.

Wow, a brand new frame? That'd be better than I hoped, but then again, what'll they do with the serial?

It'll be scrapped and you'll end up with a blank frame.

So which is more rare--or highly valued--in your opinion? Mars (BI) or Crater (BI)? And why?

Both about even really. With the crater's hitting the parking lot sales, there's about an even distrubution. It's really all about the lenses when it comes to the Mars.

A pair of craters recently went for about 100 on the bay

I've had about 3 chances to get some x-metal mars at that price....prolly shoulda stepped up on one of them.

The Doctor's prognosis: The X-Metal/Black and Crater/Black are plentiful and cheap at the moment. I see no reason this should change. Now go buy two and call me next week.

They will remain low up until such point that I decide to get another pair, then they will jump.

I secont what dann has laid upon the altar of truth,... it seems that this is a situation where the original,... gets just a little more "play" cause it is the original,. and has that smoother look. I would stick with the first design concept,.. and just build your lens variations,... unless you love the mars to freakin death, then just get em all!

I was lucky to pick up a Mars black irid (non-crater) on ebay for $90 + ship. Seemed like a good deal and when they arrived they were in mint condition, look like they've never been worn and everything is tight! I think they look bada$$ on me. Now I just gotta get some ruby lenses (or ruby polarized from customxmetal.com) or cut some +red lenses for them and then they'll really turn heads!

$150 is the going rate for crater and the x-metal versions. I've seen a few, and got one myself.

They were discontinued right before they stopped using serials, so they should all still have them.

I just got a pair of X-Metal Mars. I had a question about the serial number etched on the nose hook under the nose bomb. I know they did it on the Leather Gold, but did they not do it for the X-Metal/Crater? My pair doesn't have it done.

If not, wonder why they did it for the Leather? Or was it something they started doing/stopped doing across all colourways? (Meaning you would be able to find X-Metal/Crater with it done and Leather without it being done).
